BORA IN THE ADRIATIC SEA AND BLACK SEA IMAGED BY THE ENVISAT SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR

  • Bora events over the Adriatic Sea and Black Sea are investigated by using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) onboard the European Envisat satellite. These images show pronounced elongated patterns of increased sea surface roughness caused by bora winds. The comparison of the SAR images with wind fields derived from Quikscat data confirms that in all cases a strong northeasterly wind was blowing from the mountains onto the sea. It is shown that the SAR images reveal details of the spatial extent of the bora wind fields over the sea which cannot be obtained by other instruments. Furtheremore, also quantitative information on the wind field is extracted from the SAR images by using a wind scatterometer model.

  • This paper aims to find out the statistical characteristics of the railroad accidents by weather phenomena. For this, It is investigated occurrence frequency of railroad accidents and operation obstacles from 1996 to 2008 in Korea using the KROIS data and Korea railroad accidents reports. The results are as follows; The occurrence frequency of railroad accidents and operation obstacles decrease gradually, and most of railroad accidents is a railroad traffic accidents. The amount of damages by a railroad weather-related accidents is higher than the one of the railroad accidents and operation obstacles. Weather events which is influenced the railroad weather-related accidents and incidents are rainfall, snowfall, lightning, strong winds. And they have occurred a railroad weather-related accidents and incidents, such as rail obstruction, signal failure, and power supply failure.

Numerical studies on dynamic response of interactive system between atmosphere and ocean

  • A coupling system of MM5 and POM using Stampi with different kinds of parallel computer is proposed and comparative numerical simulations of mesoscale wind induced by topography around East Sea/Sea of Japan are carried out. The results are as follows: 1) Strong horizontal conversion is induced by high mountain Pekdoo at its leeside. 2) The conversion winds at lee of high mountain are not clear in monthly and yearly mean NCEP-reanalysis because of coarse resolution of 1.86 degree by 1.86 degree. But Wind conversion is well simulated at atmosphere and ocean coupling system. And the conversion area of lee side of mountain is also agreed well with observed data of NSCAT launched in satellite ADEOS. 3) The surface ocean current is well correspondent with wind direction, induced by high mountains. And small different wind field information lead the different of particle distribution in numerical experiments of particle distribution on ocean surface.

  • Semiactive control systems have received considerable attention for protecting structures against natural hazards such as strong earthquakes and high winds, because they not only offer the reliability of passive control systems but also maintain the versatility and adaptability of fully active control systems. Among the many semiactive control devices, magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers comprise one particularly promising class. In the field of civil engineering, much research and development on MR fluid damper-based control systems has been conducted since B. F. Spencer first introduced this unique semiactive device to civil engineering applications in mid 1990s. In 2001, MR fluid dampers were applied to the full-scale in-service civil engineering structures for the first time. This state-of-the-art paper includes a detailed literature review of control algorithms considering the characteristics of fm fluid dampers. This review provides references to semiactive control systems using MR fluid dampers. The MR fluid damper-based semiactive control systems are shown to have the potential for mitigating the responses of full-scale civil engineering structures under natural hazards.

  • In recent years, advances in construction techniques and materials have given rese to flexible light-weight structures like high-rise buildings and long-span bridges. Because these structures extremely susceptible to environmental loads, such as earthquakes and strong winds, these random loadings usually produce large deflection and acceleration on these structures. Vibration control system of structures are becoming an integral part of the structural system of the next generation of tall building. The proposed control system is applied to single degree of structure with mass damping and compared with conventional PID and neural network PID control system.

Occurrence Characteristics of Marine Accidents Caused by Typhoons around Korean Peninsula

  • During the period of every summer to early autumn seasons, ships have been wrecked or grounded from effect of a typhoon in the water areas around Korean Peninsula Typhoon Rusa killed more than 100 people in September 2002. Super Typhoon Maemi passed southeast of South Korea in September 12-13, 2003, with a strong gale blowing at a record 60 m/s and caused much ship groundings, collisions and sinkings over 3000 in dockyards, harbors and places of refuge. These are things that could have been prevented had there merely been prior warning. This study outlines the occurrence characteristics of maritime accidents caused by a typhoon in South Korea for the period from 1962 to 2002. The distribution of the accident records is also compared with the trajectories, winds, central pressures of typhoons, passed during the 1990-2003. It is shown that attack frequency of typhoon and number of marine accidents is the highest in August and the marine accidents due to typhoon have a close relation to the distribution of accumulated wind and pressure fields.

Equivalent static wind loads for stability design of large span roof structures

  • Wind effects on roofs are usually considered by equivalent static wind loads based on the equivalence of displacement or internal force for structural design. However, for large-span spatial structures that are prone to dynamic instability under strong winds, such equivalent static wind loads may be inapplicable. The dynamic stability of spatial structures under unsteady wind forces is therefore studied in this paper. A new concept and its corresponding method for dynamic instability-aimed equivalent static wind loads are proposed for structural engineers. The method is applied in the dynamic stability design of an actual double-layer cylindrical reticulated shell under wind actions. An experimental-numerical method is adopted to study the dynamic stability of the shell and the dynamic instability originating from critical wind velocity. The dynamic instability-aimed equivalent static wind loads of the shell are obtained.

A BIPOLAR PLANETARY NEBULA NGC 6537: PHOTOIONIZATION OR SHOCK HEATING?

  • NGC 6537 is an extremely high excitation bipolar planetary nebula. It exhibits a huge range of excitation from lines of [N I] to [Si VI]or [Fe VII], i.e. from neutral atoms to atoms requiring an ionization potential of $\~$167eV. Its kinematical structures are of special interest. We are here primarily concerned with its high resolution spectrum as revealed by the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph at Lick Observatory (resolution $\~0.2{\AA}$) and supplemented by UV and near-UV data. Photoionization model reproduces the observed global spectrum of NGC 6537, the absolute H$\beta$ flux, and the observed visual or blue magnitude fairly well. The nebulosity of NGC 6537 is likely to be the result of photo-ionization by a very hot star of $T_{eff} \~ 180,000 K$, although the global nebular morphology and kinematics suggest an effect by strong stellar winds and resulting shock heating. NGC 6537 can be classified as a Peimbert Type I planetary nebula. It is extremely young and it may have originated from a star of about 5 $M_{\bigodot}$.

Anomaly Detection Method for Drone Navigation System Based on Deep Neural Network

  • This paper proposes a method for detecting flight anomalies of drones through the difference between the command of flight controller (FC) and the navigation solution. If the drones make a flight normally, control errors generated by the difference between the desired control command of FC and the navigation solution should converge to zero. However, there is a risk of sudden change or divergence of control errors when the FC control feedback loop preset for the normal flight encounters interferences such as strong winds or navigation sensor abnormalities. In this paper, we propose the method with a deep neural network model that predicts the control error in the normal flight so that the abnormal flight state can be detected. The performance of proposed method was evaluated using the real-world flight data. The results showed that the method effectively detects anomalies in various situation.

  • As the climate changes rapidly due to warming, it is becoming very important to ensure the stability of environmental structures. It is necessary to choose a material that withstands repeated external forces (wind loads) and satisfies members and joints that have energy absorbing power. Even if the strength of the traffic light attachment is sufficient, if the rigidity is insufficient, there is a limit to the displacement during strong winds. Excessive deformation may cause damage and fall, resulting in a safety accident. The author intends to study mechanical properties and resistance to external environment as a structural material capable of withstanding wind load (50m/sec) by fabricating a C/GFRP composite traffic light attachment using the pultrusion method (Pultrusion).
