  • The coupled channel method via the Local Reflection (LORE) matrix is employed to investigate the quantum mechanical behavior of the sticking or adsorption and desorption of hydrogen (H) atom on bilayer graphene via the armchair edge. The sticking and desorption probabilities of H are calculated and are plotted against the initial translational energy of H. The sticking probability plot shows a barrierless reaction indicating that hydrogen is easily adsorbed on the armchair edge of graphene. The desorption probability plot, however, shows that desorption of H from the graphene sheets is an activated process with a barrier height of 4.19 eV suggesting that a strong bond exists between the adsorbed H atom and the edge carbon atom. Thus, temperatures higher than the operating temperatures (300 - 1500 K) of conventional fuel cells are necessary to release the adsorbed H atom from the armchair edge of graphene.

  • Steady state flow calculations are conducted for the newly-designed turbo-pump inducers to validate the performance of Tascflow code. Hydrodynamic performance is evaluated, and structures of the passage flow and leading edge recirculation are also investigated. The calculated results show good coincidence with the experimental data of the static pressure performance and velocity profiles near the leading edge. Upstream recirculation, tip leakage and vortex flow at the blade tip and near leading edge are main sources of pressure losses. Amount of pressure losses from the upstream to the leading edge corresponds to that of pressure losses through the whole blade. The total viscous losses are considerably large due to the strong secondary flow.

  • Numerical simulations on a single stage transonic compressor which is developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute are carried out and their results are compared with experimental data for cross validations. Comparisons between experimental data and numerical simulation results show good agreements on a performance curve, static pressure and total pressure distributions. CFD results show that there is a clear interaction between tip leakage flow and normal shock in the rotor passage. Tip leakage flows are almost dissipated after the strong normal shock and it forms a strong recirculation near the blade tip. Also a large separation region grows on the suction surface just after the normal shock. As the pressure ratio and blade loading increase, the normal shock line moves upstream and it starts to deviate from the blade leading edge. Then the tip leakage flow does not overcome the strong adverse pressure gradient and flow blockage originated from the tip recirculation region. As a result, the tip leakage flow heads for the neighboring blade leading edge, which results in a compressor stall.

  • Functionalization of zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) segment containing 120 C atoms with pyridine (3NV-ZGNR) defects was investigated on the basis of density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, results show that edge-modified ZGNRs by Sc can adsorb multiple hydrogen molecules in a quasi-molecular fashion, thereby can be a potential candidate for hydrogen storage. The stability of Sc functionalization is dictated by a strong binding energy, suggesting a reduction of clustering of metal atoms over the metal-decorated ZGNR.

  • We propose a simple method for tracking a nonparameterized subject contour in a single video stream with a moving camera and changing background. Then we present a method to eliminate the tracked contour object by replacing with the background scene we get from other frame. Our method consists of two parts: first we track the object using LOD (Level-of-Detail) canny edge maps, then we generate background of each image frame and replace the tracked object in a scene by a background image from other frame that is not occluded by the tracked object. Our tracking method is based on level-of-detail (LOD) modified Canny edge maps and graph-based routing operations on the LOD maps. To reduce side-effects because of irrelevant edges, we start our basic tracking by using strong Canny edges generated from large image intensity gradients of an input image. We get more edge pixels along LOD hierarchy. LOD Canny edge pixels become nodes in routing, and LOD values of adjacent edge pixels determine routing costs between the nodes. We find the best route to follow Canny edge pixels favoring stronger Canny edge pixels. Our accurate tracking is based on reducing effects from irrelevant edges by selecting the stronger edge pixels, thereby relying on the current frame edge pixel as much as possible. This approach is based on computing camera motion. Our experimental results show that our method works nice for moderate camera movement with small object shape changes.

  • We present and discuss the Tropopause Folding Turbulence Detection (TFTD) algorithm for the Korean Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS) which is originally developed for the Tropopause Folding Turbulence Product (TFTP) from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R. The TFTD algorithm assumes that the tropopause folding is linked to the Clear Air Turbulence (CAT), and thereby the tropopause folding areas are detected from the rapid spatial gradients of the upper tropospheric specific humidity. The Layer Averaged Specific Humidity (LASH) is used to represent the upper tropospheric specific humidity calculated using COMS $6.7{\mu}m$ water vapor channel and ERA-interim reanalysis temperature at 300, 400, and 500 hPa. The comparison of LASH with the numerical model specific humidity shows a strong negative correlation of 80% or more. We apply the single threshold, which is determined from sensitivity analysis, for cloud-clearing to overcome strong gradient of LASH at the edge of clouds. The tropopause break lines are detected from the location of strong LASH-gradient using the Canny edge detection based on the image processing technique. The tropopause folding area is defined by expanding the break lines by 2-degree positive gradient direction. The validations of COMS TFTD is performed with Pilot Reports (PIREPs) filtered out Convective Induced Turbulence (CIT) from Dec 2013 to Nov 2014 over the South Korea. The score test shows 0.49 PODy (Probability of Detection 'Yes') and 0.64 PODn (Probability of Detection 'No'). Low POD results from various kinds of CAT reported from PIREPs and the characteristics of high sensitivity in edge detection algorithm.

  • In this paper, we present a directional error concealment technique to compensate a lost block. Generally, the strong edge of an image has the large amounts of the variance because of its large coefficients in the wavelet domain. For estimating edge direction of a lost block, a $X^2$ hypothesis-testing problem is applied using the variance of wavelet coefficients. The lost block is interpolated according to the estimated edge direction. The pixels for interpolation is obtained from the edge direction. The proposed method outperforms the previous methods in objective and subjective qualities.

  • There are many factors which influence on the performance of a diesel engine. The piston bowl shape and swirl ratio are important factors to enhance the fuel-air mixing and flame propagation. In this study, calculations of the flow field in the cylinder of the diesel engine were carried out using the CONCHAS-SPRAY code for different bowl shapes and swirl ratios. In the case of constant swirl ratio, vortices which affect fuel-air mixing, evaporation and flame propagation are generated more strongly and consistently in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber than in the flat piston type. With this strong squish effect, injected fuel droplets are widely diffused and rapidly evaporated in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber. Especially a strong squish is developed and large and strong vortices are generated in the edge cutted bowl piston chamber. As the swirl ratio increases, it is found that a large and strong squish and vortices are generated in the combustion chamber and also fuel droplets are diffused into the entire combustion chamber.

  • In this paper, we propose a CIECAM02-based color edge detection method. The proposed method detects color edges with distance metric based on the characteristics of Human Visual System (HVS). The CIECAM02 is inherently strong in considering HVS. We use a vector gradient edge detector in a JCh components with newly proposed distance metric. The proposed method detect edges clearly. We subjectively confirm the performance with clearly enhanced images.

  • We analyzed the lowering of transmittance due to lateral field effect in the edge of pixel. We studied the method to solve the problem of VA-LCD. It occurred director distortion and transmittance lowering by strong lateral field in the edge of pixel. For analyzing the director distortion and improving the transmittance lowering, we applied the edge pattern to PVA-LCD of cross pattern. As a results, transmittance in the new VA modes were higher than that of conventional VA modes.
