An automated CAD System of Product with Bending Constraints and Piercing for Progressive Working (구속을 갖는 굽힘 및 피어싱용 제품의 프로그레시브 가공을 위한 자동화된 CAD 시스템)

  • This paper describes a research work of developing a computer-aided design of product with bending constraints and piercing for progressive working. an approach to the CAD system is based on the knowledge-based rules. Knowledge for the CAD system is formulated from plasticity theories, experimental results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. The system has been written AutoLISP on the AutoCAD with a personal computer and is composed of four main modules, which are input and shape treatment, flat pattern layout, production feasibility check, and strip-layout module. Based on knowledge-based rules, the system is designed by considering several factors, such as radius and angle of bend, material and thickness of product, complexities of blank geometry and punch profile, bending sequence, availability of press. Strip layout drawing generated by piercing with punch profiles divide into automatically for external area is shown into graphic forms, including bending sequences for the product with piercing and bending constraints. Results obtained using the modules enable the designer and manufacturer of piercing and bending dies to be more efficient in this field.

A Shape Control of Welded Joints to Improve Fatigue Strength (피로강도 향상을 위한 용접이음부의 형상제어에 관한 연구)

  • When U-ribs of steel deck plates are connected at the field, overhead welding should be done with backing strips. Misalignments may occur and lead to eccentric moments as well as high stress concentrations at welded joints. In this study, stress analyses and fatigue tests were carried out. Stress analyses for U-ribs' welded joints with backing strips were performed with different misalignments, root shapes, root gaps, and backing strip sizes. From the stress analyses, the stress concentration factors increased with increasing misalignments and root gaps. With the fixed misalignments and root gaps, the stress concentration factors obtained in the case of the semi-circle root shape were lower than those in the case of the right-angle root shape. It was verified that backing strip sizes have little influence on stress concentration factors. The fatigue tests for U-ribs' welded joints with backing strips indicated that increased misalignments shorten fatigue life drastically and cracks usually initiate at the root of the base metal and are propagated to the weld bead surface. Based on the results of the stress analyses, root-shape control methods were developed to mitigate stress concentration by changing welding condition control, radius curvature, and flank angle.

  • A model predicting thermal and wear crown in order to control strip crown and shape has been investigated at the hot roll mill. A basic equation of predicting wear crown was obtained experimentally whereas thermal crown was approximately analyzed by the integral method. The calculated result based on the accumulative model of basic eauation coincides with that measured under the real rolling conditions. The effect of wear corwn is also analyzed by the longitudinal feeding method of the work roll. The high frequency feeding method is recommended in removing local wear effectively.

  • The evolution of texture and microstructure during continuous confined strip shearing (CCSS) in aluminum 3003 alloy sheets was investigated. The tools of CCSS based on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were designed to provide a constant shear deformation of the order of 0.5 per pass while preserving the original sheet shape. FEM results indicated that the shear formation is not homogeneous throughout the sample thickness, in particular at the surface layers. A randomization of textures took place during the CCSS deformation. Observations by TEM and EBSD revealed the formation of sub-micrometer sized grains after CCSS.

  • Extensive width reduction of slabs is an important technology for achieving continuous production between the steelmaking and hot rolling processes. However, the vertical horizontal rolling process has many disadvantages, e.g., large width deviations and less efficient width reduction. This study was carried out to investigate the deformation of slab by sizing press with two steps die. To do it, dog-bone and camber are discussed in width sizing process considering the deformation behavior according to the deviation of anvil velocity and the deviation of initial slab temperature. In this paper, the various causes of the sizing press phenomena are mentioned for the purpose of understanding of rolling conditions. As a result, the optimal anvil shape having a minimum-forming load is obtained by FE-simulation and ANN.

  • The mathematical set-up model was developed to reduce the mechanical property deviation in annealed and slightly rolled steel strip. The mechanical peculiarities of temper rolling process, such as high friction value and non-circular contact arc, Low reduction and non-negligible entry and exit elastic zones as well as central restricted deformation zone are all taken into account. The deformation of work rolls is calculated with the influence function method and arbitrary contact arc shape is permitted. The strip deformation is modeled by slab method and the entry and exit elastic deformation zones are included. The restricted deformation Bone near the neutral point is also considered. It was revealed that the new model has better accuracy than present regression model by statistical analysis with actual mill rolling data.

  • A crack with electrically impermeable surfaces in an electrostrictive material subjected to uniform electric loading is analysed. The effect of electric yielding on stress intensity factor is investigated by using a small scale yielding model and a strip yield zone model. Complete forms of electric fields and elastic fields are derived by using complex function theory. The electrical yield zone shapes for two models are different each other. The two models, however, predict similar yield zone sizes under the small scale yielding conditions. It is found that the influence of electric yielding on the stress intensity factor is insensitive to the modeling of the electrical yield zone shape.

  • Tension leveling is the process that removes the shape defects such as edge waves and center buckles, which may be formed in the rolled strip. The main purpose of tension leveling is to eliminate the differences in elongation in order to reduce the residual stresses. In this paper, a new approach for the optimization of the process conditions in tension leveling is presented. This new approach is an analytic model that predicts the residual stresses from the strip curvature. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with the predictions from a finite element model.

Feature curve extraction from point clouds via developable strip intersection

  • In this paper, we study the problem of computing smooth feature curves from CAD type point clouds models. The proposed method reconstructs feature curves from the intersections of developable strip pairs which approximate the regions along both sides of the features. The generation of developable surfaces is based on a linear approximation of the given point cloud through a variational shape approximation approach. A line segment sequencing algorithm is proposed for collecting feature line segments into different feature sequences as well as sequential groups of data points. A developable surface approximation procedure is employed to refine incident approximation planes of data points into developable strips. Some experimental results are included to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

The mechanical peculiarities of temper rolling process, such as high friction value and non-circular contact arc, low reduction and non-negligible entry and exit elastic zones as well as central restricted deformation (preliminary displacement or sticking) zone etc., are all taken into account. The deformation of work rolls is calculated with the influence function method and arbitrary contact arc shape is permitted. The strip deformation is modeled by slab method and the entry and exit elastic deformation zones are included. The restricted deformation zone near the neutral point is also considered. The concept and the calculation method of limiting preliminary displacement are used to determine the length of the central restricted deformation zone. The comparison of the model results with the measured mill data is also made.
