Buffeting response of long suspension bridges to skew winds

  • A long suspension bridge is often located within a unique wind environment, and strong winds at the site seldom attack the bridge at a right angle to its long axis. This paper thus investigates the buffeting response of long suspension bridges to skew winds. The conventional buffeting analysis in the frequency domain is first improved to take into account skew winds based on the quasi-steady theory and the oblique strip theory in conjunction with the finite element method and the pseudo-excitation method. The aerodynamic coefficients and flutter derivatives of the Tsing Ma suspension bridge deck under skew winds, which are required in the improved buffeting analysis, are then measured in a wind tunnel using specially designed test rigs. The field measurement data, which were recorded during Typhoon Sam in 1999 by the Wind And Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) installed on the Tsing Ma Bridge, are analyzed to obtain both wind characteristics and buffeting responses. Finally, the field measured buffeting responses of the Tsing Ma Bridge are compared with those from the computer simulation using the improved method and the aerodynamic coefficients and flutter derivatives measured under skew winds. The comparison is found satisfactory in general.

Weld Defect Formation Phenomena during High Frequency Electric Resistance Welding

  • In this study, welding phenomena involved in formation of penetrators during high frequency electric resistance welding were investigated. High speed cinematography of the process revealer that a molten bridge between neighboring skelp edges forms at apex point and travels along narrow gap toward to welding point at a speed ranging from 100 to 400 m/min. The bridge while moving along the narrow gap swept away oxide containing molten metal from the gap, providing oxide-free surface for a forge-welding at upsetting stand frequency of the budge formation, travel distance and speed of the bridge were affected by the heat input rate into strip. The travel distance and its standard deviation were found to have a strong relationship with the weld defect density. Based on the observation, a new mechanism of the penetrator formation during HF ERW process is proposed.

초고성능 콘크리트 바닥판과 역T형 강거더의 합성보를 위한 스터드 및 퍼즐스트립 전단연결재에 관한 연구 (Stud and Puzzle-Strip Shear Connector for Composite Beam of UHPC Deck and Inverted-T Steel Girder)

  • 초고성능 콘크리트(UHPC)의 높은 강도 및 내구성으로 인하여 교량 바닥판에 UHPC를 적용하는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. UHPC 바닥판은 강도 및 강성이 기존 콘크리트보다 월등히 높아 합성된 강재 거더 상부 플랜지의 구조적 역할을 대신할 수 있을 것이므로, 이 연구에서는 상부 플랜지를 생략한 역T형 거더를 UHPC 바닥판과 합성한 형식을 제안하고자 한다. 역T형 거더를 적용함에 있어 상부플랜지에 전단연결재를 용접하는 방식으로 전단연결재를 설치할 수 없으므로, 새로운 형식의 전단연결재의 개발이 필요하다. 이 연구에서는 3가지 형식의 전단연결재를 제안하고 이들의 정적 극한강도를 실험적으로 평가하였다. 첫 번째 형식은 웨브에 스터드를 횡방향으로 직접 용접한 전단연결재이고, 두 번째는 유럽에서 개발된 퍼즐스트립 형식의 전단연결재이며, 마지막은 횡방향 스터드와 퍼즐스트립을 조합한 전단연결재이다. 실험 결과 횡방향 스터드는 AASHTO LRFD에 제시된 기존 스터드 전단연결재의 강도 설계식 보다 평균 24% 크게 나타났으나, 바닥판에 쪼갬 균열이 현저히 발생하여 이를 방지하기 위한 새로운 대책이 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 퍼즐스트립은 기존 유럽의 연구에서 제안한 극한강도 평가식 보다 40% 큰 강도를 보여, 기존의 평가식이 지나치게 보수적인 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 2가지를 조합한 형식의 전단연결재의 극한강도는 각각의 전단연결재의 극한강도를 산술적으로 합한 것보다 작은 극한 강도를 보였고 바닥판에 균열 또한 현저하였으므로, 조합에 따른 상승효과를 기대할 수 없었다.

불규칙형상 박판제품의 블랭킹용 네스팅 시스템 (A nesting system for blanking or piercing of irregular-shaped sheet metal products)

  • This paper describes a nesting system of a computer-aided design of blanking and piercing for irregularly shaped sheet metal products. An approach to the system is based on knowledge-based rules. A nesting system is designed by considering several factors, such as utilization ratio which minimises the scrab for single or pairwise operation, bridge width, grain orientation and design requirements which maximise the strength of the part when subsequent bending is involve. Therefore this system which was implemented blank layout and strip layout module can carry out a nesting with a best utilization and a process planning for irregular shaped sheet metal products in single or pairwise operation and generate the blank layout and strip layout in graphic forms. Knowledges for a nesting and a process planning are extracted from plasticity theories, relevant references and empirical know-hows of experts in blanking industries. This provides its efficiency and effectiveness for nesting irregularly shaped sheet metal products.

Precision of predicted 3D numerical solutions of vortex-induced oscillation for bridge girders with span-wise varying geometry

  • A method of numerical analysis without conducting 3D wind tunnel model tests was examined in our previous study for predicting vortex-induced oscillation of bridge girders with span-wise varying geometry. The aerodynamic damping forces measured for plural wind tunnel 2D models were used in the analysis. A further study was conducted to examine the precision of solution obtained by this method. First, the responses of vortex-induced oscillation of two rocking models and a taut-strip bridge girder model with span-wise varying geometry were measured. Next, the responses of these models were numerically analyzed by means of this method, and then a comparison was made between the obtained $Vr-A-{\delta}_a$ contour diagram of each 3D model in the wind tunnel test and the diagram in the numerical analysis. Since close correlations were observed between each two $Vr-A-{\delta}_a$diagrams obtained in the model test and in the analysis in cases where the 3D model did not have strong three-dimensionality, our findings revealed that the predicted solution proved to be reasonably accurate.

A distributed piezo-polymer scour net for bridge scour hole topography monitoring

  • Scour is one of the leading causes of overwater bridge failures worldwide. While monitoring systems have already been implemented or are still being developed, they suffer from limitations such as high costs, inaccuracies, and low reliability, among others. Also, most sensors only measure scour depth at one location and near the pier. Thus, the objective is to design a simple, low cost, scour hole topography monitoring system that could better characterize the entire depth, shape, and size of bridge scour holes. The design is based on burying a robust, waterproofed, piezoelectric sensor strip in the streambed. When scour erodes sediments to expose the sensor, flowing water excites it to cause the generation of time-varying voltage signals. An algorithm then takes the time-domain data and maps it to the frequency-domain for identifying the sensor's resonant frequency, which is used for calculating the exposed sensor length or scour depth. Here, three different sets of tests were conducted to validate this new technique. First, a single sensor was tested in ambient air, and its exposed length was varied. Upon verifying the sensing concept, a waterproofed prototype was buried in soil and tested in a tank filled with water. Sensor performance was characterized as soil was manually eroded away, which simulated various scour depths. The results confirmed that sensor resonant frequencies decreased with increasing scour depths. Finally, a network of 11 sensors was configured to form a distributed monitoring system in the lab. Their exposed lengths were adjusted to simulate scour hole formation and evolution. Results showed promise that the proposed sensing system could be scaled up and used for bridge scour topography monitoring.

실습선의 거주위치 변경에 따른 수직가속도 저감에 관한 연구 (A Study on Decrease of Vertical Accelerations due to Changes in Location of the Habitation Division for Training Ship)

  • Research on ship motion and seasickness is recognized as the important research area to ensure the pleasant operative environment in addition to the research of operation safety of ship. In this paper, the motion performance in waves for the training ship Kaya of Pukyong National University is obtained by using the computer program based on Strip Method. To guarantee the pleasant seafaring in ocean, the vertical acceleration of ship motion is calculated according to the habitation division location in the ship. The results of calculation by changes of location of habitation division are compared with the guideline of MSI(Motion Sickness Incidence). The degree of motion sickness is shown and discussed through the comparison between calculated vertical acceleration spectrum and MSI guideline. To improve the safety of ship in motion and the pleasant seafaring in waves, the downtrend of seasickness ratio is needed by the decrease on vertical acceleration of the ship. Through the results in this paper, the relocation of both bridge and accommodation toward the aftship reduced the vertical acceleration and MSI.

레이놀즈수에 따른 이순신대교 거더에 작용하는 공기력의 변화 (Aerodynamic Forces Acting on Yi Sun-sin Bridge Girder According to Reynolds Numbers)

  • 본 연구에서는 트윈박스 단면인 이순신대교의 레이놀즈수 변화에 따른 공기력의 영향을 살펴보는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 1/30 대축척 모형을 제작하여 공군사관학교 아음속 중형 풍동에서 최대 풍속 70m/s까지 풍속을 증가시켜가면서 공기력을 측정하여, 전북대학교 소형풍동에서 수행한 저레이놀즈수 풍동실험 결과와 비교하였다. 본 연구 대상 교량 단면은 레이놀즈수의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났으며, 고레이놀즈수 실험 결과 기존 저레이놀즈수 실험보다 항력계수는 약 23%정도 낮은 수준인걸로 나타났다. 또한 경계층 촉진장치를 효과적으로 이용하면 기존의 저레이놀즈수 풍동실험 조건에서 고레이놀즈수 모사 실험이 가능한 것으로 판단된다.

  • Using the Taguchi method, optimum process condition of lead frame blanking has been determined in the point of view of shape of blanked profile. As the main process parameters, clearance, strip holding pressure and bridge width are selected. According to the orthogonal array table, three levels of experiment have been carried out for each factors. The optimal blanking condition is analyzed with the SN ratio. It has been verified that the optimal process condition can be determined with a combination of basic blanking experiment and experiment design method. Both the effect of each factors and gain can be judged in the quantitative manners from the analysis of SN ratio.
