CrN film coated by AIP method, improved the mechanical properties (Hardness, Roughness, wear and fatigue) of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The properties were studied using GXRD, XPS, Hardness, Roughness, wear and fatigue testers. CrN thin film thickness was about 7.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ and grew with (111) orientation. Hardness of CrN thin film was very high (Hv 1390) and roughness of the surface layer was greatly improved (Ra=0.063$\mu\textrm{m}$) compared with matrix alloy (Ra=0.321$\mu\textrm{m}$). Such changes of hardness and roughness could be contributed to improving the wear resistance and fatigue life. Striation like pattern with dimples and voids, a typical fatigue fracture mode, was observed throughout the specimen.

On-line process control equipment for CO $_{2}$ laser cutting is unavailable for industrial application. The major part of the industrial cutting machines are regulated off-line by highly educated engineers. The quality inspection of the sample is visual and referred to different quality scales. Due to lack of automation potential laser users hesitate to implement the cutting method. The first step toward an automation of the process is development of a process monitoring system and the research is concentrated on the area of on-line quality detection during CO $_{2}$ laser cutting. The method bases on the detection of the emitted light from the cut front by photo diode. the signal from photo diode has been undertaken from Fourier analysis and statistical analysis. As a result, it is possible to estimate striation pattern according to beam travel speed.

Study on the chaotic stirring has been performed numerically and experimentally for a shallow rectangular tank accompanying a vortex shedding. The model is composed of a rectangular tank with a vertical plate with a length half the width of the tank. The tank is subject to a horizontal sinusoidal oscillation. The chaotic stirring was analysed by Poincare sections, unstable manifolds and Lyapunov exponents. As Reynolds number is increased the stirring effect is decreased due to the growth of a regular regions near the lower surface of the tank. In the other hand decrease of Reynolds number gives a weaker vortex shedding resulting in the poorer stirring effect. It was also found that the Lyapunov exponent is the highest at the dimensionless period of 1.3-1.5, which seems to be the best condition for the efficient stirring. The experimental visualization for the deformation of materials exhibits the striation pattern similar to the unstable manifold obtained numerically.
Diatoms are unicellular eukaryotic microalgae, and they are highly diversified in aquatic environments. We describe an unrecorded diatom species Fragilaria saxoplanctonica Lange-Bertalot & Ulrich (Bacillariophyceae) collected from Paldang Reservoir, Korea, on 4 April 2022. The valve was needle shaped and narrowly rectangular, its ends were rounded, and no spines were found on the outline of their valves. The valve was 67.2-70.2㎛ in length and 1.4-2.9㎛ in width. The ratio of width-to-length was 1 : 23.2-50.1. The pattern of striation was alternate or opposite, and the number of striae in 10㎛ was 24-26. Molecular comparisons of the 18S rDNA and rbcL sequences showed that it belonged to the genus Fragilaria. These morphological and phylogenetic results confirmed that our species was F. saxoplanctonica, and it was the first record in Korea.
In this paper, a Quaternary fault is described, which is developed in the mid-eastern part of Ulsan Fault Zone, near the southern Gaegok-ri, Oedong-eub, Gyeongju, Korea. The Gaegok 6 fault is developed along the contact between Early Tertiary granite and Quaternary gravel deposit overlying unconformably the granite. The fault strikes $N02^{\circ}{\sim}22^{\circ}E$ and dips $45^{\circ}{\sim}80^{\circ}$ to the west. This fault has a 30~50 cm wide cataclastic shear zone with gouge zone, mixed with Quaternary sediments and fault breccia of granite. In the main Quaternary fault plane, the orientation of striation is $17^{\circ}$, $356^{\circ}$, indicating a dextral strike-slip faulting with some normal component. There is another striation ($78^{\circ}$, $278^{\circ}$ and $43^{\circ}$, $270^{\circ}$) with reverse-slip sense, developed on the subsidiary plane which cuts the main Quaternary fault plane. In brief, the fault has been developed between the granite in the western part and the Quaternary gravel deposit in the eastern part. The western block of fault is uplifted. The striations and movement senses of faults indicate multiple compressional stages in this region. The fault has a similar orientation, westward dipping geometric pattern, and reverse sensed kinematic pattern with Gaegok 1 fault developed in the north. Thus, the Gaegok 6 fault is probably a southern extension of Gaegok 1 fault.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of morphology and structure of bone tissue, caused by administration of high-dose hydrocortisone, elcatonin and cyclophosphamide. In order to carry out experiment, 60 four-week old Sprague-Dawley strain rats weighing about 107 gms were selected and divided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group was subdivided into three groups, assigned fifteen rats for each group, by the different drugs administered. Each experimental group was then categorized as follows: hydrocortisone 30㎎/㎏ b.w. with daily subcutaneous injection, elcatonin 20U/㎏ b.w. with daily subcutaneous injection, and cyclophosphamide 100㎎/㎏ b.w. with a single intraperitoneal injection. Fifteen rats were injected daily with 5㎖/㎏ b.w. of normal saline solution subcutaneously in control group. Rats in control group and experimental group were serially sacrificed on the 6th, the 15th and the 22nd day after injection of normal saline, hydrocortisone, elcatonin and cyclophosphamide, respectively. Being sacrificed, both sides of mandibular condyles were removed and fixed with 10% neutral formaline. The one side of mandibular condyles was radiographed with soft X-ray apparatus. Thereafter, the obtained radiographs were observed, and the bone density of condylar head and condylar neck regions was measured by use of transferring video-based digital radiograph. The other side was further decalcified and embedded in paraffin as usual manner, then sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, observed by light microscope. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Sclerotic changes with regularly increased trabecular pattern were seen throughout experimental periods in hydrocortisone group. Increased the number of trabecular pattern with irregularity and periodic striation on the periphery of condylar head region were appeared with lapse of time in elcatonin group. In cyclophosphamide group, irregular trabecular pattern and stippled radiopacities on mandibular condyle were observed with lapse of time. 2. The bone density of condylar head region was increased in hydrocortisone group, decreased in elcatonin group, and tended to be decreased in cyclophosphamide group, compared with that of control group according to the experimental periods. 3. The bone density of condylar neck region tended to be rather increased in hydrocortisone group, elcatonin group and cyclophosphamide group, depending on the experimental periods. 4. In microscopic studies, there were irregular trabecular bonds and osteoblastic activity in hydrocortisone group and elcatonin group throughout experimental periods, degenerative cartilage and trabecular bones in the 6th day and densely calcified trabecular bones in the 22nd day in cyclophosphamide group.

The momentum, heat and mass trasfer phenomena in the silicon melt of the Czochralki crystal growth system are calculated using a three dimensional numerical simulation thechnique. Even though axisymmetrical boundary conditions are imposed to all calculations in a 3cm diameter crucible, several types of non-axisymmetric profiles of velocities, temperature and oxygen concentration appeared in the melt. Because of the non-axisymmetric profiles of velocities, temperature and oxygen concentration appeared in the melt. Because of the non-axisymmetric profiles and rotations of fluid induced by the crucible rotation, temperatures and oxygen concentrations in the silicon melt fluctuate. The rotating velocity of the profile is calculated from the phase shift of the data of temperature or oxygen at two different points which have same radius from center but 90 degree angular difference. From this calculation, it is found that the rotating veolocity of the oxygen and temperature is different from the crucible rotation rates. Therefore the frequencies of the oscillating temperature and oxygen concentrations are not same to the frequencies of the crucible rotations. Futhermore, the components of the frequencies of the temperature and oxygen concentration at the same point are not same. The fluctuation behaviors of the temperature or oxygen themselves are also different when the points are different. The calculation show that the temperature and the oxygen concentration near the interface also fluctuate. The results suggest that the striation pattern found in the grown silicon single crystals may ben generated by the oxygen concentration and the temperature oscillations of the melt occurred near the interface.
Fretting fatigue behavior of SCM420 steel commonly used in the automotive industry for structural applications was investigated in this study. In addition, the effect of bridge pad on the fretting fatigue test was evaluated from different pad materials and following conclusions were drawn. Simple fatigue limit of SCM 420 steel was determined to be 350 MPa while this value was 225 MPa and 285.5 MPa with SCM420H and with SM45C pad, respectively. Reduction in fatigue limit was, thus found to be 35.7% and 17.9% with SCM 420H pad and SM45C pad, respectively. Results of fracture surface observation revealed that typical striation pattern of fatigue failure existed as well as dimpled and cleavage frature appearance was found in final fractured region. From the EDS compositional analysis, test sample and pad part all had high signals for oxygen and iron, suggesting that worn particles might be iron oxide, although exact chemical composition has to be confirmed. Considerable reduction in fatigue life was apparent in SCM 420 steel under fretting fatigue against simple fatigue. Such reduced fatigue life by fretting damage should be considered as an important factor not only in the viewpoint of repairing but also inevitably in the design stage of structural components.
It has been debated whether postischemic reperfusion is necessarily beneficial to salvage the myocardium after ischemic insult or not. Therefore, this study was undertaken to compare the ultrastructural changes as well as the distribution of $Ca^{2+}$ in the ventricular myocardial cells after transient ischemia and after postischemic reperfusion, and to suspect to what extent the postischemic reperfusion is beneficial. After 10 minutes of ischemia, the heart developed wide I bands, glycogen depletion, intramyofibrillar edema, mitochondrial swelling, clumping and migration of chromatin, ghosts of lipid droplets, disintegration of cell junctions, sarcolemmal disruption, and loss of $Ca^{2+}$ binding capacity of the sarcolemma and the mitochondria. In spite of reperfusion, in a large number of cells, the ultrastructure was more severely damaged, however, $Ca^{2+}$ binding capacity of the sarcolemma and the mitochondria restored. These results suggest that postischemic reperfusion may help the myocardial cells to restore their function to control $Ca^{2+}$ to a certain extent, but that it could aggravate the ischemic insult.
