  • The concrete bridge decks on the main girder will usually develop initial cracks in the longitudinal or the transverse direction due to dry shrinkage and temperature change, and as the bridge decks age the crack will gradually develop in different directions due to repeated cyclic loads. The strengthening direction of the concrete bridge deck is a very important factor in improving proper structural behavior. Therefore, in this study, theoretical analyses of strengthened bridge decks were performed using the nonlinear finite element method. To improve the accuracy of the analytical result, boundary conditions and material property of strengthening material was simulated by laboratory condition and test results, respectively. The effect of the strengthening direction and the amount of strengthening material were estimated and compared to the experimental results. The efficiency of the strengthened bridge decks by strengthening variables such as the amount, width and thickness of CFS was observed.

  • The addition of steel fiber with concrete significantly improves the engineering properties of structural members, notably shear strength. The purpose of this study is to determine the steel fiber shape, aspect ratio and volume fraction ratio in a point of practical usage as structural members. Steel fiber factor and volume fraction are also considered to verify the strengthening effect in member level. From the reviewing of previous researches and analyzing of consecutive material test results, the optimum shape and length of steel fiber, which can have a good strengthening effects were defined as a hooked end type and larger than 1.5 times of maximum gravel size. Analyzing the test results of strength and deformation capacity, aspect ratio 75 and volume fraction $1.5\%$ can be having a maximum strengthening effect of steel fiber. Also steel fiber factor, tensile splitting strength, and flexural strength are found as key parameter in shear strengthening effect in member level.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the shear strengthening effect of steel fiber in high strength SFRC beams. For this purpose, 13th specimens are prepared and structural tests are performed. Testing variables are shear span to depth ratio, steel fiber volume fraction, shear strengthening ratio in 60 MPa SFRC concrete. From the reviewing of previous researches and analyzing of material and member test results, shear span to depth ratio 2.5 and steel fiber volume fraction 1.0% can be having a maximum strengthening effect in steel fiber. Proposed shear strength estimation equation, which is considering steel fiber strengthening and shear span to depth ratio effect, underestimate the shear capacity of high strength SFRC beams. Therefore a detailed research on strength characteristics of high strength SFRC beams are needed.

  • Flexural characteristics of the R.C beams strengthened with newly-developed grid-type carbon fiber plastics(CFRP-GRIDS) were investigated. The tests were conducted under the four-points load to the failure to investigate the strengthening effects of CFRP-GRIDS on the beams. Results showed that initial cracks appeared in the boundary layers of fibers embedded in the newly-placed mortar concrete slowly progressed to the direction of supports and showed fracture of fiber plastics and brittle failure of concrete in compression in sequence after the yielding of steel reinforcement. Accordingly, the appropriate area of Grid-type carbon-fiber plastics in the strengthening design of deteriorated RC structures should be limited and given based on the ultimate strength design method to avoid the brittle failure of concrete structures.

  • The surrounding rocks of underground openings are natural materials and their mechanical behavior under seismic load is different from traditional man-made materials. This paper proposes a framework to comprehensively model the mechanical behavior of surrounding rocks. Firstly, the effects of seismic load on the surrounding rocks are summarized. Three mechanical effects and the mechanism, including the strengthening effect, the degradation effect, and the relaxation effect, are detailed, respectively. Then, the framework for modelling the mechanical behavior of surrounding rocks are outlined. The strain-dependent characteristics of rocks under seismic load is considered to model the strengthening effect. The damage concept under cyclic load is introduced to model the degradation effect. The quantitative relationship between the damage coefficient and the relaxation zone is established to model the relaxation effect. The major effects caused by seismic load, in this way, are all considered in the proposed framework. Afterwards, an independently developed 3D dynamic FEM analysis code is adopted to include the algorithms and models of the framework. Finally, the proposed framework is illustrated with its application to an underground opening subjected to earthquake impact. The calculation results and post-earthquake survey conclusions are seen to agree well, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Based on the numerical calculation results, post-earthquake reinforcement measures are suggested.

  • Application of steel plates is one of widely used methods for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams that are insufficient of shear capacity. While the existing method applying solid steel plates provides good shear rigidity, however, it is concerned by brittle bond failure patterns, inefficient material usage, and low constructability. The use of strap type steel plates has also shortcomings of low strenthening effect due to small interface bonding area and ununified behavior between plates and main body. Therefore, this study aims to introduce the shear strengthening method using slit type steel plate, which can solve out the problems aforementioned, and to verify its strengthening effects on shear capacity. A total of 13 specimens strengthened by slit type steel plates were fabricated with primary test parameters of plate width, slit spacing, and plate thickness. The test results from this study were also compared to those from the existing research on RC beams strengthened by strap type steel plates, and the strengthening effects on shear capacity of specimens having bonded slit type steel plates were quantitatively analyzed. The test results showed that the RC beams strengthened by slit type steel plates had greater shear capacities than those with strap type steel plates, which is considered to be the effects of improved composite behavior and larger interface bonding area in the RC beams strengthened by the slit type steel plates.

  • In this study, a numerical model is developed using axial deformation link elements that can effectively predict the failure behavior of RC type structures. Using this mod 1, numerical analysis was performed to investigate the strengthening effect and failure behavior of structures repaired with a new material. High-Performance Cementitious Composites, which is characterized by its ductility with 5% strain-capacity is used as a repair material. To investigate the validity of developed numerical model, simulations of direct tension specimen and flexural specimen are performed and the results are compared with published ones. The similar analysis is performed for RC beam. Through this study, it is seen that predicted response has a good agreement with the experimental results. Using this verified numerical model, the strengthening effect of repaired with HPCC structure is analyzed through load-displacement curve and failure modes. Also, the same numerical analysis is performed in RC beam repaired with HPCC. The effect of HPCC ductility is estimated for the overall behavior of structures. Based on the results, the fundamental data are suggested for repaired structures with HPCC.

  • Recently the design specification has been advanced with preventing earthquake disaster in Korea because of increasing occurrence of large size earthquake. A composite plate with ductile fiber is proposed, which can enhance the performance of built tunnel in both strength and ductility. This study is to focus to verify the effect of strengthening of existing tunnels which is built without earthquake type load scenario, so that it can provide the safety of existing urban subway system against earthquakes.
