Microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe-Si-Mn-P high strength steel sheet have been investigated by controlling the cooling rate. Bainite and ferrite were obtatined by annealing in the ferrite pluse austenite region, and ferrite and austenite were obtatined after annealing in the fully austenite region. Ferrite and pearlite were obtained when the cooling rate was controlled from the annealing temperature above $760^{\circ}C$ and bainite showed with increasing cooling rate, however below $760^{\circ}C$ ferrite and bainite were obtained. Tensile strengths and hardness nearly unchanged with increasing cooling rate after control the cooling rate from the temperature above $760^{\circ}C$, while tensile strengths increased and elongation decreased with increasing cooling rate when the cooling rate was controlled from the tempeature below $760^{\circ}C$. Without regard to annealing temperature, tensile strength increased and elongation decreased with increasing cooling rate. Tensile strengths and elongation values heat treated in the ferrite plus austenite region were higher than those in the fully austenite region. Retained austenite and strength-elongation balance showed the maximum value at $780^{\circ}C$ and decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Strength-elongation balance value was controlled by the retained austenite.

The effects of retained austenite and carbon content in the retained austenite on the tensile strength-elongation balance and spot weldability of TRIP high strength steel sheet have been investigated. The retained austenite of granular type increased with increasing intercritical annealing and austempering temperature, and film type was increased with the increase of austempering time. The volume fraction of retained austenite increased with decreasing intereritical annealing temperature, and the maximum value was obtained at austempering temperature of $400^{\circ}C$. The values of tensile strength-elongation balance increased with decreasing intercritical annealing temperature and maximum value was obtained at austempering temperature of $400^{\circ}C$. The maximum value of tensile strength-elongation balance was obtained at a retained austenite content of about 12%. Tensile shear strength of the specimens with retained austenite was higher than that of the normalizing specimens. With increasing welding current and time, the tensile shear strengh and nugget diameter increased, while nugget thickness showed the peak value and then decreased. The optimum range of welding condition at the given welding pressure of 350kgf was 7~11kA and 10~15 cycles.
The variation of the mechanical properties and the formation of retained austenite with heat treatment conditions in austempered Si bearing carbon steels has been investigated. In the case of a steel containing 0.35C-1.48Si-0.95Mn, it has been found that a feather shape bainite structure of lath are obtained under a isothermal treated condition at just below the Ms temperature, and the martensite, bainitic ferrite and retained austenite of second phase particles on the ferrite matrix for a isothermal treated steels after intercritical annealing are precipitated in a linked shape. The retained austenite with $2{\mu}m$ size induced as TRIP is found to increase with increasing the formation rate of retained austenite for the intercritical annealing and high Si containing steels. The tensile strength is increased as austempering temperature increases in all isothermal treatment temperature, whereas the elongation is shown to roughly decrease as the tensile strength increases. The values of tensile strength-elongation balance have showed a marked dependence upon the elongation rather than the tensile stregth, and their values are increased for high Si containing steels and intercritical annealing condition. The most optimum result has been shown to be the tensile stregth-elongation balance of $2882.4kgf/mm^2.%$ and the elongation of 33.3% for a "B" steel in the heat treating temperature range of $780{\sim}370^{\circ}C$.
Volume fraction and morphology of retained austenite, tensile properties of TRIP type high strength steel sheet with Fe-C-Si-Mn-Cu chemical composition have been investigated. The retained austenite of granular, bar and film type existing in specimen was obtained after intercritical annealing and austempering. The granular type retained austenite increased with increase of intercritical annealing and austempering temperature. With increase of intercritical annealing temperature, retained austenite and carbon contents increased. Maximum contents of retained austenite was obtained by austempering at $400^{\circ}C$. The maximum tensile strength was obtained by austempering at $450^{\circ}C$ and maximum elongation was obtained at $400^{\circ}C$. T.S${\times}$E.L value increased with increase of retained austenite contents due to the elongation strongly controlled by contents of retained austenite, but tensile strength was affected with various factors such as bainitic structure etc.
We were studied to the effect of alloying element and retained austenite on a mechnical properties and that used steels were composed three types composition. According to the soaking temperature, a retained austenite was pricipitated in the bainitic ferrite matrix and it was pricipitated to a flake type of about $2{\mu}m$, a mixture of massive and bar type and a flake type of about $1{\mu}m$ size. Through x-ray diffraction analysis, the amount of retained austenite was increased with addition of Si and Ni for equal heat treatment condition and it was best abundanted in the soaking temperature of $855^{\circ}C$. The balance value of strength and elongation were complexly controlled not only a retained austenite formation but also a formation characteristic and shape of the retained austenite and bainite. The balance value of strength and elongation were most satisfactory obtained with "B" and "C" specimens in a firstly heat treated at $855^{\circ}C$ and the best result was that a $2840kg/mm^2.%$ with the heat teratment condition of $855^{\circ}C-400^{\circ}C$ used for "C" specimen.
Development of a dental Ni-Cr alloy system for porcelain veneering crown and bridge was studied in this research. The principles of alloy design were a) It should not contain toxic beryllium. b) It should have low melting Point. c) It should be easily ground and polished. d) It should possess an adequate strength to resist the deformational force In the mouth. e) It should be bondable Ivith porcelain by chemically. After investigating the effect of minor elements such as boron and rare earth metals on the mechanical properties of the Ni-Cr alloy system, the compromised ideal composition for dental use was determined. The composition was l9.6%, Cr, 5.6% Mo, 3.4% Si, 1, 0% Fe, 0.01% Ti, 0.5-1.0% B, 0.2-0.6% misch metal, balance Ni. To compare the performance of experimental alloy with commercially available alloys, the properties such as strength, melting point, and bond strength were measured. The results Ivere as follows: a) Boron increases the strength of the alloy but reduces the elongation. b) Misch metal increases the strength when the boron content is low, but does not increase the strength when boron content is high. And it reduces the elongation drastically, c) Mechanical strength of the experimental alloy was not superior to commercially available Be containing alloy, but handling performance such as castability, ease of granting and polishing, and cuttability were superior to the Be containing alloy.
Heat treatment conditions and the formation of microstructures were studied for improving the transformation-induced plasticity(TRIP) effect of retained austenite and mechanical properties of Fe-0.2%C-1.5%Si-1.5%Mn sheet steel. An excellent combination of elongation about 30% and high strength over 760MPa was achieved by processing of intercritical annealing and isothermal holding Intercritical annealing the sheet steel produced fine particles($1{\sim}2{\mu}m$) of retained austenite which were stabilized due to C enrichment by subsequent holding in bainite transformation range. Heat treatment conditions were depended on the shape and distribution of second phases as well as the volume fraction and stability of retained austenrte. In this work, the heat treatment condition of optimal strength-elongation balance was obtained by holding the steel at $400^{\circ}C$ for 200sec, after intercritical annealing at $790^{\circ}C$ for 300sec.

There have been a number of works on manufacturing ultrafine grained steels with average ferrite grain sizes of smaller than a few micrometers to develop beneficial high strength steels. Among microstructures in low carbon steels, lath martensite is known to be useful to produce an ultrafine grained ferrite matrix and finely globular cementite particle. Thus, severe plastic deformation and subsequent annealing at lower temperature of lath martensite would become an effective way to produce ultrafine grained steels. However, most ultrafine grained steels exhibited a total elongation of a few per cent in tensile tests. Such a defect is one of the primary factors restricting the potential applications of ultrafine grained steels. Therefore, the improvement of the strength-elongation balance is required for the application of ultrafine grained structural steels. In this study, the effect of deformation temperatures on microstructure, such as ferrite grain size and the distribution of cementite particles, and mechanical property of lath martensite steels, was investigated. Specimens were fabricated through cold rolling or warm rolling and subsequent annealing.
The variation of the mechanical properties, microstructures and the formation of retained austenite with heat treatment conditions in austempered ductile cast iron has been investigated. In the case of austempered ductile cast iron below 25mm diameter, it has been found that a pearlite structure are not obtained under a super cooled condition at range of $0.05^{\circ}C/sec{\sim}10^{\circ}C/sec$, and the matrix is precipitated in graphite, bainite and retained austenite. After austempering treatment the retained austenite is increased with decreasing cooling rate. The elongation increases with decreasing super cooling rate, and the optimum result has been shown to be the elongation of 15.6% at super cooling rate of $0.05^{\circ}C/sec$. The optimum result has been shown to be the tensile strength-elongation balance of $1656kgf/mm^2.%$ and it is more than doubled to as the casting state and continuous cooling condition.
Engine valve-shaped TiAl-Mn intermetallics containing 43.5 to 47.5at%Al (Mn/Al=0.036) are successively fabricated by reactive sintering the elemental powder mixtures near-net shaped by extrusion and die forging. A duplex structure consisted of lamellar grains and equiaxed $\gamma$ grains is developed for all compositions, and the areal fraction of the lamellar grains(or equiaxed $\gamma$ grains) decreases (or increases) with increasing Al content. As Al content increased, the elongation increases with accompanying decrease in yield strength and ultimate tensile strength at both room temperature and 80$0^{\circ}C$. This indicates that the suitable composition is Ti-45at%Al-1.6at%Mn in considering the balance of ambient and elevated tensile properties. The reactive-sintered Ti-45Al-1.6Mn alloy shows superior oxidation resistance not only to the plasma arc melted one but also to the heat resistance steel STR35(representative exhaust valve head material for automotive engine). The reactive-sintered Ti-45Al-1.6Mn alloy coated with an oxidizing scale exhibits a better wear resistance than induction hardened martensitic steel STR11(representative exhaust valve tip material for automotive engine).
