  • The rheological behaviour of high strength self compacting concrete (HS-SCC) studied through an experimental investigation is presented in this paper. The effect of variation in supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ four different types of processed crushed sand as fine aggregates is studied. Apart from the ordinary Portland cement (OPC), the SCMs such as fly ash (FA), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) ultrafine slag (UFS) and micro-silica (MS) are used in different percentages keeping the mix -paste volume and flow of concrete, constant. The combinations of rheology, strength and durability are equally important for selection of mixes in respect of high-rise building constructions. These combinations are referred to as the rheo-strength and rheo-durability which is scientifically linked to performance based rating. The findings show that the fineness of the sands and types of SCM affects the rheo-strength and rheo-durability performance of HS-SCC. The high amount of fines often seen in fine aggregates contributes to the higher yield stress. Further, the mixes with processed sand is found to offer better rheology as compared to that of mixes made using unwashed crushed sand, washed plaster sand, washed fine natural sand. The micro silica and ultra-fine slag conjunction with washed crushed sand can be a good solution for high rise construction in terms of rheo-strength and rheo-durability performance.

  • The pushover analysis is becoming a popular tool for seismic design of building structures. In this paper the state-of-art on static nonlinear analysis of building structures is presented with the emphasis on the effects of analysis parameters; i. e., lateral load patterns, modeling of members, and analysis computer programs. The analysed results may have variation even if a same structure is analysed. This paper is to investigate how large the variation is and what the main causes of the variation are. The difference of analysed results, the resultant variation of lateral story shear force and flexural strength of structural members are discussed. The pushover analysis procedure are routinely used in the seismic design of building structures, but some problems must yet be clarified, such as the effects to evaluate the parameters of analysis on the basis of a lateral load patterns and modeling of members.

  • The shear strength of deep-sea core sediments from the nofheast equatorial Pacific was measured in various conditions to ensure precision of results. The comparison items were 1) two different measuring systems (hand-held vane and motorized vane), 2) in different places of on-board immediately after collecting the core samples and on-land laboratories after storing these samples for three months in a cold room, 3) two different core samples from a multiple corer within a sampling station, and 4) four different measuring points (holes) from a core sample. In this experiment, the values of shear strength in deep-sea sediments show significant change with depth which increase toward the bottom of core. Also, the results of two cores recovered at the same station indicate that vertical variation of shear strength is mainly caused by the change of physical properties. They strongly support the fact that the difference of vue syrtem and/or experimental conditions are not major factor in the variation of geotechnical properties.

  • In order to select the optimum mix for the required fluidity and strength of mass concrete which is applied to transfer girder and to choose the optimum curing method depending on circumstances through hydration heat analysis of mass concrete, this study examined slump flow, air content and elapsed variation (0, 30, 60, 90) in unhardened concrete properties and reviewed compressive strength characteristics in hardening properties. And hydration heat analysis results through simulation are as follows; 1) Fluidity changes of unhardened concrete showed no significant difference, and those of elapsed variation also showed no difference but a bit of tendency to increase in comparison with the initial properties. 2) The higher the water-binder ratio was, the lower the compressive strength properties were, and the higher the fly ash replacement rate was, the lower the compressive strength development was. 3) In case of $Fc=40N/mm^2$, the optimum mix was fly ash replacement rate of 15% from water-binder ratio of 33.0%. 4) Hydration heat analysis results showed that in case of bundle cast, concrete temperature profile characteristics around transfer girder was unfavorable, and in case of separate cast, constant curing for at least seven days guaranteed thermal cracking index of 1.2.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate how the resistive exercises with vibration stimuli could affect the strength of knee muscles and balance in patients with a history of reconstructive surgery. Methods: Thirty four subjects with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were randomly divided into 3 groups; Resistive exercises with vibration stimuli group (n=11), Resistive exercises (n=11) and control group (n=12). The paired t-test was used to show the variation before and after exercise in all three groups. One way ANOVA was used to separate the total variation between groups. Results: The results showed that there was significant improve in the strength of knee muscles in all three groups and resistive exercise with vibration stimuli he group showed a better result in all area than the other two groups. Comparisons of sway distances with open and closed eyes showed a statistically significant decrease before and after treatment in all three groups, there was no statistically significant difference between groups. There was a significant difference only in the sway distance with the eyes closed. Conclusions: Applying the resistive exercise with vibration stimuli as a therapeutic exercise program resulted in a positive effect to the functional activity not only in rapidly recovering the strength the weaken muscles and lost of balance ability, but also expecting an earlier return to daily life by advancing the date of the process for the functional activity.

  • Teak tree breeding programs have been conducted over the last several decades in various locations throughout Indonesia. These programs have produced superior teak clones with growth increments > 3 cm diameter at breast height. The wood quality of this clonal teak must be evaluated to determine the final use of these trees and the success rate of the teak breeding programs. In this study we investigated the physical condition (reflected in wood color and heartwood percentage), physical properties (moisture content, basic density, shrinkage, and tangential/radial shrinkage ratio), and mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to grain, hardness, and cleavage strength) in 20-year-old clonal teak planted in Ngawi, East Java. The parameters were measured in the axial (bottom, middle, and top) and radial (near pith, middle, and near bark) directions and according to the British Standard 373:1957. The results showed that axial variation significantly affected the wood color (L*, a*, and b*), basic density, radial shrinkage, modulus of elasticity, and compressive strength parallel to the grain. Besides, the radial variation had a significant effect on wood color (L*), basic density, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to the grain, hardness, and cleavage strength. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the teak breeding program has been highly successful.

  • This research investigated variation in the improvement of the texture of chicken and pork sausages induced by microbial transglutaminase (MTG). The extractability of myofibrillar proteins from these sausages as well as the ${\varepsilon}-({\gamma}-glutamyl)$lysine (G-L) content were also investigated. MTG treatment of sausages significantly increased the breaking strength values in both meat types, especially for samples incubated at $40^{\circ}C$. However, values of the breaking strength in both meat types were increased differently. The variation in protein extractability of samples incubated at $40^{\circ}C$ for both meat types could lead to some consideration of the mechanisms and the high accessions of myosin heavy chain (MHC) to MTG. SDS-PAGE analysis showed significant changes in the density of the bands after adding MTG, especially for the pork samples in which the bands disappeared totally. The G-L content in the presence of MTG was double that in control samples of both meat types. This study suggests that the binding ability of myofibrillar proteins with MTG is strong. This leads us to suggest that MTG functions positively with different improvements in the texture of chicken and pork products that are treated mechanically, such as sausages. Variability in gel improvement level between chicken and pork sausages was observed; this resulted from the variation in meat proteins in response to MTG, as well as to the original glutamyl and lysine content.

  • This study was intended to estimate the efficiency of inducing fiber arrangement in UHPCC (Ultra High Performance Cementitious Composites). For the purpose, UHPCC members produced by several different placing methods according to flow characteristics were prepared; flexural behaviors were compared and correlation between the flexural behavior and the characteristics of fiber arrangement was investigated. Test results showed that placing method for inducing specific fiber arrangement had a considerable influence on the flexural performance. The standard specimen in which fibers are induced to be directed parallel to the principle tensile direction presented higher flexural tensile strength but lower variation. Therefore it should be considered that the flexural tensile strength actually developed in UHPCC member may be highly different and in lager variation. The qualitative variation of fiber arrangement according to the flow of UHPCC was also predicted considering the flow pattern and the boundary effect; the prediction provided good explanation to the difference in the flexural behavior according to the induced flow.

  • A method for assessing fatigue vulnerability of steel bridge members considering corrosion and truck traffic variation with time is proposed to evaluate the reduction of fatigue strength in steel bridge members. A fatigue limit state function including corrosion and traffic variation effect is established. The interaction between the average corrosion depth and the fatigue strength reduction factor is applied to the limit state function as the reduction term of strength. Three types of truck traffic change is modeled for representing real traffic change trend. Monte-Carlo simulation method is used for reliability analysis which provides the data to obtain fatigue vulnerability curves. The estimation method proposed was verified by comparing with the results of reference study and applying to the steel bridges in service.
