  • Objectives: To investigate the link between cigarette smoking and muscle strength in Japanese men. Methods: We used data on 4249 Japanese men, aged $43.3{\pm}13.9$ years, in this cross-sectional investigation study. Grip strength and leg strength were measured as indicators of overall muscle strength. Meanwhile, subjects' cigarette smoking habits were recorded by trained medical staff. The effect of cigarette smoking on muscle strength was evaluated. Results: A total of 1618 men (38.1%) were smokers and 1481 men (34.9%) exercised regularly. Significant differences in muscle strength were noted between men with and without a Brinkman index of 400 or greater, after adjusting for age. After adjusting for age, height, body weight and exercise habits, associations between the Brinkman index and leg strength and the ratio of leg strength to body weight were attenuated. Conclusions: Cigarette smoking might be negatively associated with muscle strength, especially grip strength in Japanese men.

  • Building demolition and blasting work in urban areas has a possibility which has an effect on the structural stability of nearby structures. In this study, the compressive strength and chemical composition of decrepit concrete materials were estimated by Schmidt rebound test and XRD phase analysis. The damage index of the concrete materials was calculated by measured P-wave velocities. It was revealed that the constituents of the concrete materials affect on the compressive strength. The damage index decreases with increasing compressive strength and decreasing impact energy.

  • Around the Nakdong River which is one part of the repairing business of 4 Grand Rivers currently being constructed, sandy ground is distributed throughout the wide area. Many civil engineering structures such as small and medium sized dams, flood control basins, and redevelopment of reservoirs and retention reservoirs are scheduled to be constructed, so the prevention measures for liquefaction are surely needed. To identify such liquefaction, a lot of factor affecting the strength of liquefaction were studied through laboratory investigation. Most of the conducted study was about clean sands, but in the case of the real ground the sand can exist not in the clean conditions but in the conditions mostly including sand of fine grained soil. The sand of fine grained soil has become a significant factor to assess liquefaction because many cases of liquefaction happened in the silty and clayer soil. In this study, un-drained tests of plasticity index of fine grained particles were conducted with the sands from Nakdong River. In result, the study shows that dynamic shear strength characteristics differ according to the plasticity index.

  • The live-line works are very dangerous because of direct contacts with the distribution line or neighboring contacts. So the purpose of this study is to identify the risk factor by accident occurrence form and accident case analysis, and to suggest the quantified risk index by risk occurrence frequency and risk strength analysis. And the risk index assessment is researched by accident cases analysis on work type. Accident cases of transmission distribution line are researched based on data of the Ministry of Employment and Labor in the last ten-year period (2000~2009). In results of this paper, high risk isn't always a priority of safety measures. Risk occurrence frequency and risk strength have to be considered according to detail work types, work methods and conditions of field work. And safety management measures must be planned according to risk occurrence frequency and risk strength.

  • Many researchers have reported that adding steel fiber to concrete improved its tensile and flexural strength significantly, but relatively few studies have been made on the compressive behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete. It is still less in case of high strength steel fiber-reinforced cementitious composites(SFRC). The main objective of this research is to examine the effect of adding steel fiber on the compressive strength of high strength SFRC using fiber reinforcing index(RI, $V_f(I_f/d_f)$). It was found from the study that compressive strength was noticeably increased in proportion to RI. In conclusion, the relationship between Reinforcing Index(RI) and compressive strength in case of high strength steel fiber-reinforced cementitious composites was suggested.

  • The amount of the wood chip ash is expected to increase continuously as demand of wood chip-based heat and electricity increase. Thus, there is increased interest in wood chip ash utilization. In this study, as a program of utilization in wood chip ash, the physical and chemical properties of wood chip ashes generated from a combined heat and power plant were investigated. The chemical analysis showed that the main contents of wood chip ash are composed of silica, alumina and alkali. A possibility of reuse as secondary cementitious materials was investigated by the analysis of strength activity index, and compared with coal ash. The highest value for Strength activity index of wood chip fly ash was 78% at 90 days curing time. This result revealed that wood chip fly ash has the potential to be utilized as the admixture for cementitious material.

  • Purpose: This study investigated whether the strength imbalance between two muscles can affect the score of EMG based biofeedback game, and whether the EMG based biofeedback game score can be used as predictable indicator of the degree of muscle balance alternating the conventional strength measuring equipment. Methods: 40 participated in this study. Biodex was used to measure the peak torque/weight in order to calculate the muscle strength balance index between plantar flexor and dorsiflexor of ankle joint. And muscle balance index (MBI) was calculated. The EMG biofeedback game scores of dorsiflexor and plantar flexor were acquired, so that the EMG electrodes were attached at tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius. The relationship between the game score and the muscle balance index were analyzed. Results: There was negative correlation between the muscle balance index between plantar flexor and dorsiflexor and the peak torque/weight of plantar flexor (r=-0.70). And there was negative correlation between the muscle balance index between plantar flexor and dorsiflexor and the game score of plantar flexor (r=-0.83). Conclusion: The EMG biofeedback game score had significant relationship with muscle imbalance at ankle joint, so it seems that the game score can be used for predicting the degree of muscle imbalance as a parameter.

  • Polyurethane foams were synthesized with different contents and kinds of catalysts to know change of properties under various NCO index. UTM(universal testing machine), DSC(differential scanning calorimetry), SEM(scanning electron microscope) and FT-IR(Fourier transform spectroscopy) were used for studying the PUF's physical properties change. Compressive strength of PUF increased with increasing contents of catalyst. Glass transition temperature(Tg) and compressive strength of PUF using PC-8 and 33LV catalyst, increased with increasing NCO index at the aging. According to the results of Infrared spectral analysis, reduction of NCO peak was found in gelling catalyst, because unreacted NCO reacted with polyurethane. Although Tg and compressive strength of PUF using TMR-2, unchanged with increasing NCO index at the aging, because trimerization of isocyanate.
