A Study on the Evaluation of Pedestrian Environment in the Main Street in Rural Area - Focused on General Town and Base Seat of a Myeon Office of 5 Local Governments in Jeollanam-do - (농촌지역 면소재지 중심가로의 보행환경 평가에 관한 연구 - 전라남도 5개 지자체의 일반읍·거점면소재지를 중심으로 -)

  • This study is to find a way that improves the pedestrian environment in the main street in rural areas. The main streets of five local governments in Jeollanam-do, general towns and bases seat of a myeon office, were studied. The research results are as follows. First, all three groups under investigation required multi-purpose activities on main street. This is thought to be due to the maintenance of the main street with vehicle-centered maintenance, thereby revising the walking space around essential activities. Second, the simple size of the sidewalk width is not closely related to the safety of pedestrians, and it is judged that the pedestrian space should be maintained considering the size of the floating population, acceptable activities, and proper sidewalk width. Third, the center where pedestrian space and streetscape are maintained has spatial constraints on sidewalks and lanes, so there should be spatial flexibility. Also, it is necessary to find a way to minimize the occupancy of pedestrian roads due to ground parking lots in relation to pedestrian continuity. Fourth, improvement of walking environment should involve community activities other than physical improvement.

A Street-Child's Board Game: the Endless Quest for Respectability in Ragged Dick

  • Horatio Alger's Ragged Dick (1868) betrays the economic and social system of nineteenth-century America through a self-reformative bootblack's quest for respectability. Being considered a space of constant danger, nineteenth-century New York City serves as a game board, and both visitors and residents of the city are supposed to avoid dangers while moving across its space. Dick Hunter, the juvenile protagonist of the novel, illustrates a street-child who starts his game of life from the backline of the game board. Continuing his quest for respectability, not only must he abandon the bad habits that he acquired as a street-child, but he also must avoid thieves and swindlers just like a tourist or like a player of nineteenth-century American board games. As Dick's social rise goes parallel with his movement in the city space, his entrance to a bank brings him the access to other respectable places, and a series of entrance turns him into a legitimate subject in the official system of the American society. While he continues his game of life successfully with the help of gentlemen patrons, in reality it is almost impossible for a disadvantaged player to escape the backline of the society. Thus, Dick's success story presents Alger's fantasy about the ideal economic system in which materials and persons are endlessly circulated.

A Study on Efficient Sidewalk Green Space Development for Improving Urban Thermal Environments and Enhancing Pedestrian Comfort - Focused on the Derivation of Parameters for Design, and Proposing Methods for Green Space Creation - (도시열환경 개선 및 보행자 열 쾌적성 증대를 위한 효율적 가로녹지 조성방안 연구 - 계획 및 설계를 위한 매개변수 도출과 녹지조성 방법 제안을 중심으로 -)

  • This study aims to establish an efficient street green area to improve the urban thermal environment and enhance pedestrian thermal comfort. Specifically, This study identified parameters applicable to green space planning and design, analyzed thermal environment mitigation mechanisms for each parameter, and, based on these findings, proposed methods for tree species selection and planting in green space planning and design. To achieve this, 61 papers were selected through a four-stage process from both domestic and foreign sources. The selected papers were analyzed, and the following main results were derived: In open street canyons with high stress levels due to low aspect ratios and high sky view factors(SVF), broadleaf trees with wide crown widths, low trunk heights, high leaf area index(LAI), and high crown heights were found effective in reducing heat, thereby increasing the amount and quality of shade. In contrast, in deep and narrow street canyons with relatively low heat stress due to high aspect ratios and low SVF, broad-leaved trees with narrow crown widths, high trunks, low crown heights, and low LAI were effective in reducing heat by enhancing ventilation. This study can serve as fundamental data for establishing standards for street green spaces to improve the thermal environment of street canyons and enhance thermal comfort of pedestrians. Additionally, it can be valuable when selecting the location and prioritizing street green spaces. Moreover, it is anticipated to be a foundational resource for creating guidelines for green space planning and design in response to climate change.

  • 삶의 질을 향상시키기 위한 유비쿼터스 테크놀로지 도입으로 인해 제품개발, 주거, 상업시설 등에서 시작하여 최근 유비쿼터스 환경 구축의 일환으로 u-City 구현에 중점을 두고 많은 연구 진행되고 있다. 그 중 가로환경 디자인은 공공 시설로서 유비쿼터스 환경 구축의 중요한 이슈가 되고 있다. 그러나, 오늘날 가로 공간은 그 수가 양적으로 팽창되었을 뿐 각각의 특색에 맞게 조성되고 있지는 못하며, 물리적 환경개선에 중점을 두어 단순한 가로정비 수준에 머물고 있다. 이로 인해 지역주민과 이용자 중심의 참여에는 부족한 면이 많았다. 이에 본 연구는 유비쿼터스 테크놀로지를 도입하여 보다 실용적이고 현실 참여적인 공간으로 디자인함으로써 새로운 u-Street 디자인을 제안하고자 한다. 또한, 이와 같은 공공장소에서의 서비스가 이용자들과 어떠한 인터렉티브 커뮤니케이션을 가질 수 있을지에 대해 살펴보고 이를 디자인에 반영하여 공간이 인간과의 상호작용을 원활히 하고 감성적인 공간 디자인이 될 수 있도록 u-Service 를 개발하는 데 중점을 두고자 한다. 본 연구는 부산 광복로를 사례로 진행되었으며, 그 결과 다음과 같은 측면에서 기대효과를 예측할 수 있다. 첫째, u-City 의 기반 시설로서의 u-Street는 수평적이고 친환경적인 가로 경험을 통해 사람이 직접 여러 서비스와 인터렉션할 수 있다. 둘째, 본 연구에 제안된 u-Service 는 이전 광복로의 침체되고 비활동적인 공간을 활동적이고 생동감있는 공간으로 재활성화시키는데 중요한 매개체로서의 역할을 하게 될 것이다. 셋째, 주민과 이용자들의 적극적인 참여를 유도하여 지속적인 공간을 만들어 내는 데 크게 기여할 것이다.

  • The purpose of this study is examine the characteristics of public open space in the office buildings located in urban commercial strip, in terms of its relationships to street, to building, and to order surrounding facilities. Theoretical basis of this research is that public outdoor spaces are to be the intermediate territory set between streets and a buildings. 5 commercial buildings in Seoul are selected as sample cases and they were closely analyzed in a comparative manner. Based on this comparison, several planning guidelines are suggested for the activation of the space, mainly in terms of the location of public open space in relation to street, the design techniques and devises reflecting the purpose of the space, and territorial arrangement and furniture layout, and the patterns of relationship to surrounding space and facilities.

Carbon Storage and Uptake by Street Trees in Seoul

  • This study quantified the carbon storage and uptake by street trees in Seoul and explored suitable planting and management strategies. A systematic sampling model was used to select 50 plots to survey the structures of street trees. The average density and cover of street trees were approximately 5.8 trees/$100m^2$ and 12.1%, respectively. Trees with a dbh of less than 30 cm accounted for about 66.3% of the total number of trees surveyed. The total carbon storage and uptake by the street trees were approximately 103,641 t and 10,992 t/yr, respectively. The total carbon uptake equaled the amount of annual carbon emissions from driving of about 11,000 cars. Street tree planting and management strategies were proposed to enhance carbon uptake. They included multi-layered and multi-aged planting, securing ground and space for plant growth, and avoiding excessive tree pruning.

  • The purpose of this study are observing changing direction of lobby space that happen by change of medical environment investigating lobby space of General Hospital by our country's medical policy change time and supply pabulum that need in forward Hospital Architecture planning. Results of this study are as follows ; Since Whole National Insurance enforcement from 1993 to 1995, form of general hospital lobby is form that outpatient entrance and inpatient entrance are detached. And lobby function divided to waiting space for medication, requisition space and also that is appearing being detached with rest space for user. ntil 1999 since 1996 that is since Medical Treatment Information System construction, the biggest characteristic of General Hospital lobby form is making Hospital Street itself do improving efficiency of flow planning being included in lobby.

A Study of Utilization of Semi-public Space of Street for the Betterment in Life Environment (도시생활환경 개선을 위한 도로변 공개공지의 활용실태에 관한 연구)

  • This study tries to promote an effective use of semi-public space of urban street in social point of view. The main results are follows. First, semi-public space is occupied by private users and it makes urban landscape unrecoverable. The real problem is that people do not know the space is for public use rather than pure private use. Second, the standard of semi-public space requirement should be changed from floor space to lot area. In addition, the standard should apply to buildings on an area less than a legal standard. Third, some ways of attaining the semi-public space in relation with adjacent lots should be introduced in the case of urban redevelopment nad living condition improvement projects.

  • There were many theories to suggest the indicators that evaluate stability and reflect the plan in mixed traffic street in all traffic modes This Paper analyzed residential street of Suwon City adopting time-space occupancy index among these indicates. Three survey street. congregated into apartment house. were selected to analyze this and pictured by video camera over one hour. and the length of these street were 76m, 55m, and 34m each, and major street by each region, comparably high in Pedestrians and pass vehicles, were selected. Basic datum to calculate time-space occupancy index and time-space occupancy index per person was gathered through video analysis. i.e Parameters for pedestrians, cars, bicycles, average speed of bicycles, and parking car. There are some limitation to analyze LOS of mixed traffic street in all traffic modes, not pedestrian mall. Therefore this paper presented evaluation standard of LOS. In conclusion. the aim of this paper is to suggest modeling based on guidelines for evaluating LOS of mixed traffic street in all traffic modes. It is estimated that this will be influencing indicates for improving pedestrian environment, and Planning mixed traffic street in future.

A Study on the Street Revitalization for Downtown Regeneration -Focused on the Myeong-dong Fashion Street in Cheonan City- (기존도심재생을 위한 가로활성화 방안에 대한 연구 -천안시 명동패션거리 일대 가로를 중심으로-)

  • This study is an attempt to seek ways to revitalize the main streets in local city with regard to urban regeneration. It focuses on the case of Myeong-dong Fashion Street located in front of Cheonan Station, which recently lost its vitality. In order to explore causes of the decline and solutions for restore, this paper investigate the concerned urban area by approaching through three different aspects: physical and environmental aspects, social and economic aspects, historic and cultural aspects. In addition, the street visitors were surveyed on their visiting patterns, priorities and discontents about the components of street, and preferences for its restoring, etc. The investigation resulted in following findings and proposals. In physical and environmental dimension, it is needed to create legal incentives for encouraging local residents to develop their own district, and suggested to plan green space for relaxation and cultural arts space by using existing buildings, along with the expansion of public parking. In regard of social economic aspects, it is proposed to give each street specialized commercial theme. At the historic and cultural level, it is suggested to plan the pedestrian network which links the Fashion Street with surrounding historic elements.
