  • The seismic vulnerability of Turkey is relatively high due to its active fault systems with potential to create destructive earthquakes. Thus, reducing the loss of life and property, the number of the earthquake-prone buildings and their retrofit requirements are considerably significant key issues under the scenario earthquakes. The street survey based rapid assessment (SSRA) method can be considered as a powerful tool to determine the seismic vulnerability of building stock of an earthquake-prone city/state. In this study, the seismic vulnerability of the building stock of the Kirikkale province in Turkey is aimed to be estimated adopting the street survey based rapid assessment method (SSRA). For this purpose, central 2074 existing reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings were structurally surveyed with rapid visual site screening and disadvantages such as, the existence of short-column, soft-story, heavy overhangs, pounding effect and local soil conditions were determined for obtaining the structural performance score of each. The results obtained from the study demonstrate that 11-25% of the surveyed buildings in the study region needs to be investigated through more advanced assessment methods. Besides, higher correlation between increasing story number and unsafe/safe building ratio is obtained for the buildings with soft-story parameter than that for those with heavy overhangs and short-column parameters. The conformity of the results of the current study with the previous documented cases of rapid assessment efforts in the recent earthquakes in Turkey shows that the SSRA method for the Kirikkale province performed well, and thus this methodology can be reliably used for similar settlement areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to categorize the types of sidewalk cafes, and to evaluate design factors with types of sidewalk cafes for street revitalization. Consequently, it may suggest efficient and systemic policies for the guidelines of sidewalk cafes. To ensure this end, the types of sidewalk cafes were categorized from the street relationship perspective by site investigation. A literature review and importance analysis were used to select the evaluation criteria, and the data were analyzed by statistic methods such as descriptive analysis and factor analysis. As a result, five main factors of the evaluation criteria were contracted: accessibility, aesthetics, identity, environmental, culturedness. Cumulative factor loading of these five factors was 68.731%, which was quite high. And the evaluation using the Likert scale was performed by 4 experts. Types of sidewalk cafes were categorized into 5 types: protruding, gating, blending stereoscopic, elevation angle, and sign provision from the street relationship perspective. On the evaluation by type, aesthetics and culturedness were the worst evaluated in the protruding type and the gating type, culturedness was the worst in the blending stereoscopic type, accessibility, aesthetics, culturedness were the worst in the elevation angle type, and accessibility, identity, culturedness were the worst in the sign provision type. On the evaluation by the indicators, culturedness was the worst evaluated, and on the evaluation by criteria, 'safety for impaired persons', 'interest of programs', 'openness of entrance' were the worst. It is recommended that a survey of importance-performance analysis focused on users be conducted.

  • A noise prediction method of axial flow fan is developed by incorporating through-flow method and vortex shedding noise model. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuation induced by wake vortices of fan blades and radiate as diploe distribution. The wake vortices are analyzed by combining Karman vortex street model and through-flow analysis results, and the vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by thin airfoil theory. The predicted sound pressure levels and directivity patterns of fan noise by the present method are favorably compared with fan noise test data. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful for predicting the aero-acoustic performance map of the fan operated at off-design point.

  • Traffic signal control problems in urban street networks are formulated in two ways. In the formulations network flows are assumed to satisfy the user route choice criterion. the first formulation which is called implicit substiuation incorporates user route behavior implicitly in the objective function by recognizing the dependence of the link flows on the signal variables. On the other hands, the second one which is called 'penalty formulation' consists in expressing the route choice conditions in the form of a single nonlinear constraint. Approximate solution algorithm for each of the formulations was investigated in detail and computer codes were written to examine key aspects of each algorithm. A test was done on a network which is small in size but sufficiently complex in representing real-world traffic conditions and the test result shows that both algorithms produce converged solutions. It is recommended, however, that further studies should be done in order to compare the performance of each algorithm more in depth.

  • In urban area, since multipath and signal attenuations frequently occur due to street trees, street lights and buildings, it is difficult to obtain accurate navigation solution using GPS. As these problems also impact negatively on the INS/GPS coupled system, implementing advanced transportation systems such as autonomous navigation system and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) become quite hard. For this reason, to alleviate deterioration of navigation system performance in urban area, direction information extraction algorithm using vision system is proposed in this paper. 2D Finite Rate of Innovation (FRI) technique is applied to extract lane edges. The proposed technique is simulated using road images and feasibility of proposed technique is analyzed through the simulation results.

  • When it comes to museumification, it has often been approached in terms of false history, placelessness or simulacra. However, this research aims at exploring the relation between the bodily-spatial performance of walking in the city and the museumification of urban space. For this, first it reviews theoretical discussions of walking as a bodily-spatial performance. Then, in the case of Daegu's Modern Street Tour and particularly focusing on the tour map, it looks at how the bodily performance of walking constructs the urban space of the tour as a museumified space. Finally, seeing the participants' blogs and other websites as another performative space, it examines how the bodily performance of walking reproduces the discourse and space of the tour in virtual space as well as in actual space. The study suggests the elusive assemblage of heterogeneous and multiple time-spaces immanent in urban space, which is different from the absolute and linear order of time-space in museum space.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to improve the performance of Transformer-based speech recognizers using data augmentation that locally adjusts the frame rate. First, the start time and length of the part to be augmented in the original voice data are randomly selected. Then, the frame rate of the selected part is changed to a new frame rate by using linear interpolation. Experimental results using the Wall Street Journal and LibriSpeech speech databases showed that the convergence time took longer than the baseline, but the recognition accuracy was improved in most cases. In order to further improve the performance, various parameters such as the length and the speed of the selected parts were optimized. The proposed method was shown to achieve relative performance improvement of 11.8 % and 14.9 % compared with the baseline in the Wall Street Journal and LibriSpeech speech databases, respectively.

  • In this paper, we conducted a thorough investigation of existing simulators for running simulations of Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANET) in realistic road environments, such as digital twins. After careful consideration, we chose a simulator that combines OSM (OpenStreetMap), SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility), and OMNeT++ due to its open-source nature and efficient performance. Using this integrated simulator, we carried out VANET simulations in both simple virtual road environments and realistic road environments. Our findings revealed significant differences in VANET performance between the two types of environments, emphasizing the need to consider realistic road and traffic environments for reliable VANET operation. Furthermore, our simulations demonstrated significant performance variability, with performance degradation observed as vehicle density decreased and dynamic changes in network topology increased. These results underscore the importance of digital twin-based approaches in VANET research, highlighting the need to simulate real-world road and traffic conditions rather than relying on simple virtual road environments.

  • The effects of secondary task on driving performance and subjective workload were investigated during a simulated driving. The driving performance was determined by the appropriateness of break timing. The driving simulator was provided by the Korea Road Traffic Safety Association. The subjective workload was tested by using a multidimensional measure such as NASA-TLX. Road was categorized into two types: narrow alley and wide street. The secondary task included pushing the number on the cellular phone, pushing radio channel, and conversing with a passenger. Seventeen subjects volunteered in the study. The data were analyzed by using SAS. Results showed that using the cellular phone and pushing channel during driving caused 3∼22% decline of driving performance and 42∼59% increase of subjective workload respectively. These results indicated that the secondary task could be potentially dangerous although there was not a significant performance decrease due to the notable increase of mental workload. In the future, if we can use a more sensitive and realistic driving simulator, the effects of secondary task under a dynamic driving situation can be investigated.
