Based on the results of this theoretical analysis, the concept and meaning elements, function elements, and design elements of the street furniture which was planned in accordance with the goal and functions of public space were identified. For the meaning elements of street furniture design, fun, health, culture, sustainability, and vitalization were identified. For the function elements of street furniture design, convenience, safety, and delivery were identified. As the characteristics of modern street furniture design, convergent, green, digilog, functional, and universal designs were analyzed. This study is meaningful in that it recognized the roles of street furniture in modern public space as a concrete, practical environmental design element and estimated the development directions of street furniture design in public space.

The data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package. The results of descriptive statistics, factor analysis, t-test and ANOVA are presented. The result of this study showed that residents of Kwang-Ju city were not satisfied with street furniture, especially the wastebasket. Natural, easy and simple design for street furniture were highly appraised. And there were distinct differences in preferences of street furniture by sex and age groups. Women group wanted warmer and richer design than the other groups. Older age group wanted more curved and active design than the other groups. Considering these results, it is desirable to apply flexible and unique design according to the various characteristics of users and the region rather than to apply strict and standardized design. These results provide a practical guideline for the development of the street furniture design.

  • This is a study on methods for designers of furniture and products to generate and develop design concept in consideration of design and existing conditions of the space when they design street furniture. In particular, in case when they participate in a process of designing new space, this study aims to reveal methods generating strategic elements and basic ideas for designing street furniture through cases study of projects by understanding and analyzing concept of overall space design and by extracting artistic elements for deployment of specific designs. First, Design DNA, which decides overall flow of design concept of street furniture, is extracted through analyses of basic concepts of space design. Next, by applying 3V Design Process, alternatives of the concept generation are suggested through methods of storytelling and design language under the two approach methods of verbalization stage and visualization stage. Also its methods were explored through suggestion of designs by developing each idea of the respective concepts into specific design vocabulary.

  • Under 'The Design Street' Project, one of the urban environment improvement projects of Seoul, the facilities on the street have been greatly varied in terms of design. In addition, the municipal authority has pushed each district to develop its own identity based on the integrated design of the city. This study was aimed to propose a design which could solve the current problem in street furniture in terms of environmental improvement through an analysis on current street conditions in "Y" District as a part of Seoul Design Street Project. It has attempted to propose 11 street furnitures based on the basic strategy of 'Soft City' which has been promoted by Seoul City in accordance with the Seoul Public Facility Guidelines as 1. Airy Design, 2. Integrated Design, 3. Collaborative Design and 4. Sustainable Design. Among them, for the total design in Seoul six facilities - kiosk, manhole, traffic signal controller, public phone, road sign and waste receptacle were proposed by Seoul City have been accepted. For local differentiation, on the contrary, five items - planter bench, bollard, lifter, bike rack and fence have been newly designed and proposed. Furthermore, it is essential to carry out systematic supervision and continuous management on the detail design and construction of current regional design development projects.

As the street furniture is the convenient facility that allows a human being's life in street space to be abundant, it is getting advanced. First of all, in terms of such phenomenon, this study analyzed the cases of a research on application of street space and the actual condition of a change in the number of individuals for the street furniture, through a literature research of ubiquitous. Also, it researched into the realities of using the street furniture of the walking-desired streets at Daehac-ro and Hongdae district, where are two representative places related to digital generation. The next was carried out FGI (Focus Group Interview) with users of the street space in front of Hongik University and managers of the street furniture, and was researched into the use & management behavior, and recognition level on the street furniture. Thus, the key elements were extracted such as interchange of information for cultural activities, automation for interaction variability in function. Finally the core elements for future vision of street furniture in this digital era were extracted in 3I, namely, Information, Intellectualization, and Integration. This is considered to be applied to the establishment of direction in the process of high-tech digitalization in street furniture related to information hereafter.

  • These days, the use of alternative energy is recognized as one of countermeasures to rising oil prices and climate-change agreements. Especially, it is regarded as a main element to realize 'Low-Carbon Green Growth', one of the key policies of MB government. However, though alternative energy, renewable energy, is a main policy issue of the present administration, there are many problems to solve: the lack of recognition of its energy, the low level of its technology, its expert's shortage, and its limited application fields. Therefore, to stimulate the use of alternative energy in Korea and to change the recognition of this energy, it is needed to utilize it to urban street furniture that many people visit and use. In particular, if alternative energy is first applied to street furniture that needs energy for its management, the effect of publicity and energy saving will be so great. In this study, for the basic research to introduce and promote various alternative energy sources such as solar power, wind power, small hydro power, and human power, we analyzed the present condition of development of Korean and foreign street furniture items. Furthermore, we evaluated the level of development of these street furniture products and the design types of them and from these evaluations suggested the design direction that can solve problems in development and improve the possibility of application of these energy sources to these street furniture items. Through these analyses, this study aims to enhance the image of future environment-friendly city and make new index for the application of alternative energy.
