  • In this study, three dimensional flow analysis in a HVAC duct was performed computationally using various turbulence models and compared numerical predictions such as outlet flow split, surface pressure distribution along the duct to experimental data. It's well known that accuracy of computational predictions of flow heavily dependent on turbulent models and discritization method. Therefore, in this work, to assess the ability of turbulent models to predict characteristics of duct flow, three kinds of models, namely standard $k-\varepsilon$, RNG $k-\varepsilon$ and modified $k-\varepsilon$, containing parameter for the effect of streamline curvature were employed and validated one another by comparing with experimental data. In results, modified $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model allows a successful prediction of static pressure distribution particulary at around strong curvature but little improvement flow split. In the futrue, adoption of CFD to design HVAC duct with modified $k-\varepsilon$ model will bring benefits of producing more accurate prediction, and also give designers more detail information much more than now.

  • A computer program is developed for the prediction of the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics in the basic design step of axial flow fan. The flow field and the performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuations induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate via dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present method are favorably compared with the test data of actual fan. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful in optimizing design variables of fan with high efficiency and low noise level.

  • One stage axial type turbine is designed by mean-line analysis, streamline curvature method and blade design method using shape parameters. Tip and hub diameter of the turbine are 300mm and 206.4mm, respectively. The rotating speed is 1800RPM, and the output power is 1.4kW. The flow coefficient is 1.68 and the reaction factor at mean-line is 0.373. The number of stator and rotor of the turbine are 31 and 41, respectively. Mach number of stator exit flow near hub is 0.164. A test rig is developed for performance test to validate a developed design method. The experimental result shows that the maximum efficiency is obtained on the design point.

  • By matching a well established fast throughflow code, with standard loss correlations, and an efficient optimization algorithm, a new design system has been developed, which optimizes inlet and exit flow-field parameters for each blade row of a multistage axial flow turbine. The compressible steady state inviscid throughflow code based on streamline curvature method is suitable for fast and accurate flow calculation and performance prediction of a multistage axial flow turbine. A general purpose hybrid constrained optimization package, iSIGHT has been used, which includes the following modules: genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, modified method of feasible directions. The design system has been demonstrated using an example of a 5-stage low pressure steam turbine for 800MW thermal power plant previously designed by HANJUNG. The comparison of computed performance of initial and optimized design shows significant improvement in the turbine efficiency.

  • An axial-type turbine design technology is developed. In order to design one-stage turbine, preliminary design method is applied, and then design parameters are chosen after analyzing the gas properties within the turbine passage using the streamline curvature method. Stator blade is designed using C4 Profile, and rotor blade is designed using shape parameters. The output power is measured with various RPM and input power. The experimental result shows that the output power is proportionally decreased with the negative incidence angle.

  • The study of swirl flow has been of technical and scientific interest because it has an internal recirculation field and its tangential velocity is related to the curvature of the streamline. The fluid flow for ducts or elbows of an internal engine has been much studied through numerical methods and experiments, but studies about swirl flow has been insufficient. Using the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution, time-mean turbulent intensity, with swirl and without swirl flow for Re=10,000, 15,000, 20,000, and 25,000 along longitudinal sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable. In addition, axial velocity distribution is compared with that of Jeong's, Kodadadi's and Murakami's. It was found that the highest velocity of swirl and non-swirl flow occurs in the opposite position at the center of a round tube, $\phi$=45$^{\circ}$

The fluid flow for tubes and elbow of heat exchangers has been studied largely through experiments and numerical methods, but studies about swirling flow have been insufficient. Using the particle image velocimetry(PTV) method, this study found the time averaged velocity distribution with swirl and without swirl along longitude sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable. In addition, streamwise mean velocity distribution was compares with that of other. Furthermore, other experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent water flow in a horizontal circular tube by using liquid crystal. 2D PIV technique is employed for velocity measurement and liquid crystal is used for heat transfer experiments in water. Temperature visualization was made quantitatively by calibrating the colour of the liquid crystal versus temperature using various approaches.

  • A tubular centrifugal fin is designed by using various methods of analysis and design. A preliminary design method based on empirical optimum curves for centrifugal fin is used to determine the geometric parameters for tubular centrifugal fan. And, Quasi-3D streamline curvature duct-flow analysis is used to provide the primary position of streamlines and spanwise distribution of flow angle f3r generation of blade geometry based on S1 surface. Three-dimensional CFD solution then is obtained to optimize the blade design. Constriction of flow path in the region of impeller, backward swept blade, and central cone, which are introduced to improve the design, successfully remove or suppress the vortices downstream of the impeller.

Experimental results show that the maximum efficiency of turbine rotor is obtained on the design point, and the output power is proportionally decreased with the negative incidence angle even the test turbine is a reaction turbine. • In an attempt to solve multiobjective optimization problems, weighted sum method is most widely used for the advantage that a designer can consider the relative significance of each object functions by weight values but it can be highly sensitive to weight vector and occasionally yield a deviated optimum from the relative weighting values designer designated because the multiobjective function has the form of simple sum of the product of the weighting values and the object functions in traditional approach. To search the design solution agree well to the designer's weighting values, we proposed new multiobjective function which was the functional of each normalized objective functions and considered to find the design solution comparing the distance between the characteristic line and the ideal optimum. In this study, proposed multiobjective function was applied to design high efficiency and low noise axial flow fan and the result shows this approach is effective for the case that the quality of the design can be highly affected by the designer's subjectiveness represented as weighting values in multiobjective design optimization process.
