Geographic Information System has extended to higher assessment of water resources. GIS linking with hydrological model becomes a trend in water resource assessment modeling. One of the most popular models is SWAT2000 which have effectiveness in multi-purpose processes for predicting the impact of land management practices on water, sediments and chemicals yields in large complex watershed with varying soils, land uses, and management conditions over long period of time. In this study, SWAT2000 model was applied to Gap stream watershed in Daejeon city where TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) Regulation would be implanted. The Gap Stream watershed was partitioned into 8 subbasins, however, only 3 out of 8 subbaisns were observed for having practical gauged data on the basis of streamflow from the year of 2002 to 2005. Gauged streamflow data of Indong, Boksu and Hoeduck stations were used for calibration and validation of the SWAT Streamflow simulation. Estimation Efficiency Analysis (COE), Regression Analysis ($R^{2}$), Relative Error (R.E.) were used for comparing observed streamflow data of the 3 subbasins on the daily and monthly basis with estimated streamflow data in order to fix optimized parameters for the best fitted results. COE value for the daily and monthly streamflow was ranged from 0.45 to 0.96. $R^{2}$ values for daily and monthly streamflow ranged from 0.51 to 0.97. R.E. values for total streamflow volume ranged from 3 % to 22.5 %. The accuracy of the model results shows that the SWAT2000 model can be applicable to Korean watersheds like the Gap Stream watershed that needs to be partitioned into a number of subbasins for TMDL regulation.
The Ministry of Environment has measured streamflow at eight-day intervals for the estimation of standard flow of the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) system. This study identified the availability of the partially measured the eight-day interval data for estimating standard flow and found the optimal extension techniques of standard flow. The study area was selected for the Nakbon-A watershed in the Nakdong River, and four streamflow record extension techniques of standard flow were considered: extension, percentile, drainagearea, and regional regression methods. The flow duration curve (FDC) using the eight-day interval streamflow data indicated very high Nash and Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) values above 90 % from FDC-II to FDC-VII compared to FDC-VIII, the standard FDC. This result demonstrates that FDC using daily data of three-six cumulative years could represent standard FDC fairly well. For the streamflow record extension techniques of standard flow, the percentile method was selected as the optimal alternative, showing the minimal difference from FDC-VIII. These results validate the availability of the eight-day interval streamflow data in the standard flow estimation and the application of extension techniques. It seems that these results could reduce the uncertainty of partially measured streamflow data for water quantity and quality management.
In this study, we suggested the optimal training period for predicting the streamflow using the LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) model based on the deep learning and CMIP5 (The fifth phase of the Couple Model Intercomparison Project) future climate scenarios. To validate the model performance of LSTM, the Jinan-gun (Seongsan-ri) site was selected in this study. We comfirmed that the LSTM-based streamflow was highly comparable to the measurements during the calibration (2000 to 2002/2014 to 2015) and validation (2003 to 2005/2016 to 2017) periods. Additionally, we compared the LSTM-based streamflow to the SWAT-based output during the calibration (2000~2015) and validation (2016~2019) periods. The results supported that the LSTM model also performed well in simulating streamflow during the long-term period, although small uncertainties exist. Then the SWAT-based daily streamflow was forecasted using the CMIP5 climate scenario forcing data in 2011~2100. We tested and determined the optimal training period for the LSTM model by comparing the LSTM-/SWAT-based streamflow with various scenarios. Note that the SWAT-based streamflow values were assumed as the observation because of no measurements in future (2011~2100). Our results showed that the LSTM-based streamflow was similar to the SWAT-based streamflow when the training data over the 30 years were used. These findings indicated that training periods more than 30 years were required to obtain LSTM-based reliable streamflow forecasts using climate change scenarios.
Unit-graph model to estimate the daily streamfiow was developed on the basis of distribution graph method. The results of evaluating the application of the model to Nakdong watersheds were generally satisfactory and this model would be the groundwork of the "Unit-graph model for daily streamflow in Korean watersheds".eds".uot;.
This study describes the estimation of upstream ungauged watershed streamflow using downstream discharge data. For downstream Dongchon (DC) and upstream Kumho (KH) water level stations in Kumho river basin ($2,087.9km^2$), three methods of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) modeling, drainage-area ratio method and regional regression equation were evaluated. The SWAT was calibrated at DC with the determination coefficient ($R^2$) of 0.70 and validated at KH with $R^2$ of 0.60. The drainage-area ratio method showed $R^2$ of 0.93. For the regional regression, the watershed area, average slope, and stream length were used as variables. Using the derived equation at DC, the KH could estimate the flow with maximum 41.2 % error for the observed streamflow.
In this study, Kajiyama equation and SWAT model were used to estimate the available water resources from 1967 to 2003 at the small scale watershed, located in Dongnae-Myeon, Chunchen, Gangwon. The annual average streamflow for dry years estimated using the Kajiyama equation and the SWAT model were $2,593,779m^3$ and $2,579,162m^3$. The annual average streamflow for wet years were $7,223,804m^3$ and $7,035,253m^3$, respectively. The annual arrange streamflow for the entire 36 year period were $14,868,601m^3$ and $14,214,292m^3$, respectively. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient for comparison between Kajiyama and SWAT were 0.90 and 0.79, respectively. The comparison indicates that the Kajiyama equation and the SWAT model can be used to estimate the streamflow at th study watershed with reasonable accuracy, although the estimated values were not compared with measured streamflow data, which is not available at the small scale study watershed. However, the Kajiyama equation is recommended for estimating available water resources at Dongnae-Myeon watershed because of its ease-of-use and reasonable accuracy compared with the SWAT model, requiring numerous model input and expensive GIS software in operating the model
The temporal and spatial relationship of the weather elements such as rainfall and temperature is closely linked to the streamflow simulation, especially, to the flood forecasting problems. For the study area, Imjin river basin, which has the specific characteristics in geography with river cross operation between North and South Korea, the meteorological information in the northern area is totally deficiency, lead to the inaccuracy of streamflow estimation. In the paper, this problem is solved by using the combination of global (such as soil moisture content, land use) and local hydrologic components data such as weather data (precipitation, evapotranspiration, humidity, etc.) for the model-driven runoff (surface flow, lateral flow and groundwater flow) data in each subbasin. To compute the streamflow in Imjin river basin, this study is applied the hydrologic model SURR (Sejong Univ. Rainfall-Runoff) which is the continuous rainfall-runoff model used physical foundations, originally based on Storage Function Model (SFM) to simulate the intercourse of the soil properties, weather factors and flow value. The result indicates the spatial variation in the runoff response of the different subbasins influenced by the input data. The dependancy of runoff simulation accuracy depending on the qualities of input data and model parameters is suggested in this study. The southern region with the dense of gauges and the adequate data shows the good results of the simulated discharge. Eventually, the application of SURR model in Imjin riverbasin gives the accurate consequence in simulation, and become the subsequent runoff for prediction in the future process.
This study involves the estimation of optimal ranges of parameters for a linear watershed model. A well-known TANK model was chosen and a linear combination of four tanks assumed. The model was used to simulate daily streamflow for six watersheds of different sizes and by a trial-and-error approach a set of optimal parameters defined. The parameters were related to watershed sizes and land use conditions. Optimal parameters for ungaged conditions were defined from the relationships; daily streamflow simulated and compared to the observed date. The simulated results were in a general agreement with the data.
