  • Tidal current power system is the energy converter which converts the kinetic energy of tidal stream into electric energy. The performance of the rotor which initially converts the energy is determined by various design factors and it should be optimized by the ocean environment of the field. Flow direction changes due to rise and fall of the tides, but horizontal axis turbine is very sensitive to direction of flow. To investigate the rotor performance considering the interaction problems with incidence angle of flow, series of experiments have been conducted. The results and findings are summarized in the paper.

  • This paper aimed for numerical simulation of complicated gas turbine combustor with swirler. For the convenience of numerical analysis, fuel nozzle and air linear hole areas of secondary and dilution zone, which are issued to jet stream, were simplified to equivalent areas of annular type. In other to solve these problems, imaginary source terms which are corresponded to supplied fuel amount were added to those of governing equation. Chemical equilibrium model of infinite reaction rate and $k-{\epsilon}-g$ model with the consideration of density fluctuation were applied. As the result, swirl intensity contributed to mixing of supplied fuel and air, and to speed up the flame velocity than no swirl condition. Temperature profiles were higher than experimental results at the upstream and lower at the downstream, but total energy balance was accomplished. As these properties showed the similar trend qualitatively, simplified simulation method was worth to apply to complicated combustor for predicting combustion characteristics.

  • In this study, the numerical study has carried out to analyze the leakage in a steam turbine labyrinth seal. We modified tooth shape of the labyrinth seal and finds out difference of leakage in this study. Original model is straight labyrinth seal and its modified model is slant labyrinth seal. The numerical analyses are implemented on two models. The numerical results show that each leakage of tooth shape are found 0.4781 kg/s and 0.4485 kg/s, respectively. Slant labyrinth seal seals in a steam better than straight labyrinth seal. Since, actual clearance of the stream function in the slant model is smaller than the straight model.

  • Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle-installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction stream line inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. This paper describes operation of experience and numerical analysis composed similar condition with real high pressure feedwater heater. This study applied several impingement baffle plates to feedwater heater same as previous study. In addition, it shows difference of pressure distribution and value between single phase and two phase based on experience and numerical analysis.

  • “Flameless combustion” of lean to ultra lean mixtures, supported by high-temperature burned gas, can resolve the dilemma between complete combustion versus ultra-low NOx emissions in gas turbine combustors. The characteristics of NOx emissions and combustion in “lean-lean” two-stage combustion were investigated for fuel vapor and droplets / air mixture jets injected from the main injection tube that was placed perpendicular to the combustor wall into the primary hot burned gas prepared by combustion of lean mixtures on a perforated flame holder. The present results clearly show that the ultra-low NOx combustion supported by the reaction of lean mixtures well mixed with the hot burned gas from the primary stage is much more advantageous in achieving ultra-low NOx emissions while maintaining high combustion efficiency.

  • Dispersion of coolant jets in a film cooling flow field is the result of a highly complex interaction between the film cooling jets and the mainstream. In order to investigate the effect of blowing ratios on the film cooling of turbine blade, cylindrical body model was used. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $7.1\;\times\;10^4$. The free-stream turbulence intensity kept at $5.0\%$ by using turbulence grid. The effect of coolant flow rates was studied for blowing ratios of 0.9, 1.3 and 1.6, respectively. The temperature distribution of the cylindrical model surface is visualized by infrared thermography (IRT). Results show that the film-cooling performance may be significantly improved by controlling the blowing ratio. As blowing ratio increases, the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness is more broadly distributed and the area protected by coolant increases. The mass flow rate of the coolant through the first-row holes is less than that through the second-row holes due to the pressure variation around the cylinder surface.

  • The mathematical implementation for inverse airfoil design of wind turbines is presented using vortex panel method based on assumptions of the two-dimensional incompressible potential flow. The vortex panel method employs linear distribution of the vortex strength to obtain the well converged solution. Stream function is adopted to get the basic formula for the inverse airfoil design, and a symmetric seed airfoil is given for initial data of the iteration approach. The final airfoil shape has been compared with the original airfoil shape for validation of the mathematical procedure.

  • Most of gas turbines is operated by the type of dry premixed combustion to reduce NOx emission and economize fuel consumption. However this type operation, combustion induced instability brought failure problems cause by high pressure and heat release fluctuations. Though there has been lots of studies since Lord Rayleigh to understand this instability mechanism and control the instabilities, none of them made matters clear. In order to understand the instability phenomena, a simple experimental study with dump combustor was conducted at the moderate pressure and ambient temperature conditions. From this model gas turbine combustor self-excited instabilities at the resonance mode(200Hz) and bulk mode(10Hz) were occurred and observed at the three points of view; pressure, heat release and equivalence ratio which are acquired by peizo-electric transducer, HICCD camera and acetone LIF respectively. From this results we could see the instability mechanism clear with the account of time scale analysis which explained by the propagation of pressure wave to the upward of mixture stream and convectional transfer of the equivalence ratio fluctuation by this pressure fluctuation.

  • The first stage rotating blade of industrial gas turbine is one of the components that is normally run in exposed state at the highest temperature of the combustion gas stream. For this reason superior materials and advanced cooling technology are required to allow higher heat resisting characteristics of the component. The 1st stage blade of a selected commercial gas turbine blade made of directionally solidified Ni-based superalloy has a row of cooling holes on its trailing edge. In most cases, minor cracks have been found at some of the root cooling holes after one cycle operation (24,000 hrs) or even shorter operation time because of the high temperature gradient and the frequently alternating thermal stress. In the repair process, unfortunately, it is usually very difficult to get rid of the damage due to the fact that cracks are initiated at the root cooling hole and propagated deep into the hole. In this study, the feasibility of removing the sidewall cracks in the hole by utilizing EDM drilling has been investigated. Also the criteria of surface integrity for EDM drilling were established to achieve high quality repair as well as machining accuracy.
