Flash floods are one of the types of natural hazards which has severe consequences. Flash floods cause high mortality, about 5,000 deaths a year worldwide. Flash floods usually occur in mountainous areas in conditions where the soil is highly saturated and also when heavy rainfall happens in a short period of time. The magnitude of a flash flood depends on several natural and human factors, including: rainfall duration and intensity, antecedent soil moisture conditions, land cover, soil type, watershed characteristics, land use. Among these rainfall intensity and antecedent soil moisture, play the most important roles, respectively. Flash Flood Guidance is the amount of rainfall of a given duration over a small stream basin needed to create minor flooding (bank-full) conditions at the outlet of the stream basin. In this study, the Sejong University Rainfall-Runoff model (SURR model) was used to calculate soil moisture along with FFG in order to identify flash flood events for the Geum basin. The division of Geum river basin led to 177 head-water catchments, with an average of 38 km2. the soil moisture of head-water catchments is considered the same as sub-basin. The study has measured the threshold of flash flood generation by GIUH method. Finally, the flash flood events were used for verification of FFG. The results of the validation of seven past independent events of flash flood events are very satisfying.
The distribution of floodplain vegetation is mainly affected by hydrological and hydraulic processes. In this study, we investigated changes in the vegetation distribution due to flood discharge alteration, and the relationship between the vegetation types and the flood frequency during the last ten-year period in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream. Flood discharge of the Cheongmi-cheon Stream tended to decrease from 2006 to 2016. It has greatly decreased to less than $160m^3/s$ since 2013. This resulted in the settlement of Phragmites japonica to the wide sand bar at the Cheongmi-cheon Stream, even though it had sparse vegetation before 2013. The sand bar was fully covered with P. japonica in 2016. Vegetation communities in the floodplain were classified by dominant species, i.e. the annual-hygrophytic, the perennial hygrophytic and the mesophytic communities. Analysis of the relationship between the vegetation communities and the flood frequency shows the annual hygrophytes, perennial hygrophytes and the mesophytes communities distributed in the range of under 1 year, 1-10 year and over 7 year flood inundation area, respectively. In conclusion, distribution of the floodplain vegetation is closely related with the flood discharge and frequency in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream.

This study was carried out to develop the close-to nature construction technology for the stream which has been improved just for the flood control with artificially straightened and concrete covered, losing the various functions of the stream such as wild-life habitat, polluted water purification and waterscape. Jungpyung stream in youngin City, Kyunggi Province was selected as a case study site. The results were as follows; 1. Existing stream improvement planning could accept the close-to-nature techniques of the low-flow revetment, keeping the capability of flood control and water use. 2. The low-flow revetment was planned and executed to the bottom of the stream without damaging the existing bank, and the slope of the low-flow revetment was adjusted as 1:1.2∼1.5. Consequently it would not disturb the water flow when the flood occurred and it would keep the constant water flow even at the drought with providing a stable ecosystem and water purification. 3. Low-flow revetement was planted with Salix species and perennials naturally, and it would be a precious biotope for the diverse floras and faunas. 4. Some furnitures such as stepping stone bridge, wooden bridge and step were installed to the suitable locations for the convenience of users, and it will be ot only the sound stream environment but also easy access to the waterscape. 5. This case study site will be monitored for 3 years systematically after the construction was finished in September, 1999 to get the exact results for the scientific approvement
The purpose of this study is to trace the flood inundation area around rural small stream by using RADARSAT image because it has the ability of acquiring data during storm period irrespective of rain and cloud. For the storm August 9, 1998 in the Anseong-cheon watershed, three RADARSAT images before, just after and after the storm were used. After ortho-rectification using 5 m DEM, two methods of RGB composition and ratio were tried and found the inundated area in the tributary stream, the Seonghwan-cheon and the Hakjeong-cheon. The inundated area had occurred at the joint area of two streams, thus the floodwater overflowed bounding discharge capacity of the stream. The progression of damage areas were stopped by the local road and farm road along the paddy. The result can be used to acquire the flood inundation data scattered as a small scale in rural area.
This study is the analysis of hydraulic characteristic for stream diversion reach by numerical model test. Through it we can provide the basis data in flood, and in grasping stream flow characteristics. Analysis of hydraulic characteristics in Seoknam stream were implemented by using computer model HEC-RAS(one-dimensional model) and RMA2(two-dimensional finite element model). As a result we became to known that RMA2 to simulate left, main channel, right in stream is more effective method in analysing flow in channel bends, steep slope, complex bed form effect stream flow characteristics, than HEC-RAS.

In recent years, flood due to the consecutive storm events have been occurred and property damage and casualties are in increasing trend. This study calls the consecutively occurred storm events as a mega rainfall scenario and the discharge by the scenario is defined as a mega flood discharge. A mega rainfall scenario was created on the assumption that 100-year frequency rainfall events were consecutively occurred in the Gyeongancheon stream basin. The SSARR (Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation) model was used to estimate the mega flood discharge using the scenario in the basin. In addition, in order to perform more reasonable runoff analysis, the parameters were estimated using the SCE_UA algorithm. Also, the calibration and verification were performed using the objective functions of the weighted sum of squared of residual(WSSR), which is advantageous for the peak discharge simulation and sum of squared of residual(SSR). As a result, the mega flood discharge due to the continuous occurrence of 100-year frequency rainfall events in the Gyeongan Stream Basin was estimated to be 4,802㎥/s, and the flood discharge due to the 100-year frequency single rainfall event estimated by "the Master Plan for the Gyeongancheon Stream Improvement" (2011) was 3,810㎥/s. Therefore, the mega flood discharge was found to increase about 992㎥/s more than the single flood event. The results of this study can be used as a basic data for Comprehensive Flood Control Plan of the Gyeongan Stream basin.
In this study we analyzed flood runoff and flood characteristics of an small urban river basin which is in an apartment complex in Yewol-Dong, Buchun-Si, Gyunggi-Do. A little discharge normally flows in the river, however this small river has a relatively high potential of flood damage risk in the flood season due to the high flood level and velocity. Therefore we used the GIS data, cross section data in the river, HEC-RAS model, etc. for investigating safety of a river against flood runoff and also we investigated the stability of hydraulic structures and ability of flood prevention in the river. As the result of investigation, we found that the river had the risk of flood damage occurrence due to the hydraulic structures constructed for various purposes in the river. So we should analyze backwater effect by the structures and consider the risk factors can be occurred by the flood runoff and velocity for more safe design of a small river basin in the residential area such as an apartment complex in the urban area.

The objective of this study was to improve the cross-sectional area and height estimation method using stream width. Stream water levels should be calculated together to simulate inundation of agricultural land. However, cross-sectional survey data of small rural rivers are insufficient. The previous study has developed regression equations between the width and the cross-sectional area and between the width and the height of stream cross-section, but can not be applied to a wide range of stream widths. In this study, cross-sectional survey data of 6 streams (Doowol, Chungmi, Jiseok, Gam, Wonpyeong, and Bokha stream) were collected and divided into upstream, midstream and downstream considering the locations of cross-sections. The regression equations were estimated using the complete data. $R^2$ between the stream width and cross-sectional area was 0.96, and $R^2$ between width and height was 0.81. The regression equations were also estimated using divided data for upstream, midstream and downstream considering the locations of cross-sections. The range of $R^2$ between the stream width and cross-sectional area was 0.86 - 0.91, and the range of $R^2$ between width and height was 0.79 ? 0.92. As a result of estimating the cross-sections of 6 rivers using the regression equations, the regression equations considering the locations of cross-sections showed better performance both in the cross-sectional area and height estimation than the regression equations estimated using the complete data. Hydrologic Engineering Center - River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) was used to simulate the flood stage analysis of the estimated and the measured cross-sections for 50-year, 100-year, and 200-year frequency floods. As a result of flood stage analysis, the regression equations considering the locations of cross-sections also showed better performance than the regression equations estimated using the complete data. Future research would be needed to consider the factors affecting the cross-sectional shape such as river slope and average flow velocity. This study can be useful for inundation simulation of agricultural land adjacent to an unmeasured stream.
The purpose of this research is to analyze sensitivities on hydraulic characteristic factors of bridge and culvert causing flood water level rising. With HEC-RAS and RMA2 models, analysis of backwater due to bridge and culvert in an ideal stream was carried out. The results of hydraulic modeling and sensitivity analysis indicated that the opening ratio and the Froude number were the most sensitive factors and other factors were not quite sensitive to flood water level rising.
Forest management is done to keep ecological health of forest and to enhancement of its function. Nowadays, the abnormal climate and heavy rain happen frequently. Therefore, there are opinions that the thinning slash allowed in the mountain is flowed in rivers, which can influence in flood damage. This study, we grasp moving characteristics of thinning slash through field survey and achieved basic study about the effect of thinning slash on the discharge capacity of rivers and stream structure.
