A pin-type load-cell which uses shear-type strain gauges was developed to measure the tension of a wire in a winch. A finite element analysis was performed to determine the locations of the strain gauges. All of the shear-type strain gauges were attached onto parts that undergo regularly shear stress distributions. A Wheatstone bridge circuit was used to connect each of the gauges and to measure the strains. Linearity within the 5% error range was noted when testing the pin-type load-cell.

This paper presents the characteristics of Ta-N thin-film strain gauges as high-temperature strain gauges, which were deposited on Si substrate by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-(4∼16 %)N$_2$). These films were annealed for 1 hour in 2x10$\^$-6/ Torr vaccum furnace range 500∼1000$^{\circ}C$. The optimized conditions of Ta-N thin-film strain gauges were annealing condition(900$^{\circ}C$, 1 hr.) in 8% N$_2$ gas flow ratio deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the Ta-N thin-films for strain gauges is obtained a high resistivity, $\rho$=768.93 ${\mu}$Ω cm, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=-84 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal gauge factor, GF=4.12.

In this paper, the embedding type novel liquid metal strain gauge was developed for measuring the deformation of wind turbine blades. In general, the conventional methods for the SHM have many disadvantages such as frequency distortion in FBG sensors, the low gauge factor and mechanical failures in strain gauges and extremely sophisticated filtering in AE sensors. However, the liquid metal filled in a pre-confined micro channel shows dramatic characteristics such as high sensitivity, flexibility and robustnes! s to environment. To adopt such a high feasibility of the liquid metal in flexible sensor applications, the EGaIn was introduced to make flexible liquid metal strain gauges for the SHM. A micro channeled flexible film fabricated by the several MEMS processes and the PDMS replication was filled with EGaIn and wire-connected. Lots of experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the developed strain gauges and verify the feasibility to the actual wind turbine blades health monitoring.

The physical, electrical and piezoresitive characteristics of CrN(chromiun nitride) thin-films on silicon substrates have been investigated for use as strain gauges. The thin-film depositions have been carried out by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-(5~25 %)$N_2$). The deposited CrN thin-films with thickness of $3500{\AA}$nd annealing conditions($300^{\circ}C$, 48 hr) in Ar-10 % $N_2$ deposition atmosphere have been selected as the ideal piezoresistive material for the strain gauges. Under optimum conditions, the CrN thin-films for the strain gauges is obtained a high electrical resistivity, $\rho=1147.65\;{\mu}{\Omega}cm$, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=-186 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal gauge factor, GF=11.17.

The physical, electrical and piezoresitive characteristics of CrN(chromiun nitride) thin-films on silicon substrates have been investigated for use as strain gauges. Since reinforced soil walls were introduced in domestic civil engineering society in early 1980's, various reinforcing materials including metal strips, bar mats, and sheet-type reinforcement using geotextile, geogrid, and etc. have been developed for construction purpose. Especially, the geogrid has been mostly used as a reinforcement for reinforced earth structures. This paper describes the tensile behaviors of four types of domestic geogrids. Also, a series of the wide-width tensile tests on three types of geogrids were conducted to assess the reliability of the tensile strains in geogrid measured by strain gauge. The tensile strain by strain gauge is larger than real strain of the geogrid and a difference between strain gauge reading and real strain non-linearly increase with increasing the tensile strain. However, when the tensile strain is smaller than 3%, a difference between strain gauge reading and real strain is negligible.

The microfabricated test structures were used in order to evaluate the stress characteristics in films. The test structures were fabricated using surface micromachining technique, including HF vapor phase etching as an effective release method. The fabricated structures were micro strain gauge, cantilever-type vernier gauge and bridge for stress measurement, and cantilever for stress gradient measurement. The strain was measures by observing the deformation of the structures occurred after release etching and the amount of deformation can be detected by micro vernier gauge, which has gauge resolution of 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The detection principles and the degree of precision for the measured strain were also discussed. The characteristics of residual stress in LPCVD polysilicon films were studied using these test structures. The stress gradient due to the stress variation through the film thickness was calculated by measuring the deflection at the cantilever free end.

The aim of this study was to develop a method for installing strain gauges on moving, lubricating oil-filled, and sealed parts, such as drive shafts of equipment, including construction machinery. A measuring device was constructed using an embedded CPU and an IoT sensor to measure the strain of the strain gauge, which allowed for the measurement of axial torque and axial force, and subsequent analysis. To verify the performance of the developed device, the axial torque and axial force of the forklift were measured during operation using a strain gauge attached to the inside of the drive shaft. This study confirmed the possibility of measuring and analyzing the strain of a moving part, such as the inside of a drive shaft, which is sealed and filled with hydraulic oil.

Acoustic noise from a transformer, recently, has drawing more and more attentions. One of the main source of the noise is thought to be magnetostriction of the electrical steel sheets which compose transformer core. This paper deals with the magnetostriction of a highly grain-oriented electrical steel sheet measured by using a vector single sheet tester and a three-axial strain gauge. The results show that direction and axis ratio as well as the magnitude of the applied magnetic flux density contribute much to magnetostriction.
