  • To reflect the size effect of material $(1\sim15{\mu}m)$ during plastic deformation of polycrystalline copper, a constitutive equation which includes the strain gradient plasticity theory and intrinsic material length model is coupled with the finite element analysis and applied to plane strain deformation problem. The method of least square has been used to calculate the strain gradient at each element during deformation and the effect of distributed force on the strain gradient is investigated as well. It shows when material size is less than the intrinsic material length $(1.54{\mu}m)$, its deformation behavior is quite different compared with that computed from the conventional plasticity. The generation of strain gradient is greatly suppressed, but it appears again as the material size increases. Results also reveal that the strain gradient leads to deformation hardening. The distributed force plays a role to amplify the strain gradient distribution.

  • The high temperature deformation behavior of SCM 440 can be characterized by the hot torsion test in the temperature ranges of $900^{\circ}C$~$1100^{\circ}C$ and strain rate ranges of 0.05/sec~5/sec. The aim of this paper is to establish the quantitative equation of the volume fraction of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) as a function of processing variables, such as strain rate ($\varepsilon$), temperature (T), and strain ('$\varepsilon$). During hot deformation, the evolution of microstructure could be analyzed from work hardening rate ($\theta$). For the exact prediction of dynamic softening mechanism the critical strain ($\varepsilon_c$), the strain for maximum softening rate ($\varepsilon^*$ and Avrami' exponent (m') were quantitatively expressed by dimensionless parameter, Z/A, respectively. The transformation-effective strain-temperature curve for DRX could be composed. It was found that the calculated results were agreed with the experimental data for the steel at any deformation conditions.

  • In order to evaluate the behavior of overall range from small strain to failure, the triaxial compression tests with LVDTs were performed for local displacement measurements. According to the result it was possible to evaluate the total range behavior from 0.001% to 10% and both secant moduli of undisturbed and disturbed weathered soils had a similar result in the small slain level. The normalized shear moduli$(G/G_{max})$ in the undrained triaxial compression tests were similar to those of resonant column tests but the maximum shear moduli$(G/G_{max})$ were strongly affected by the ratio of saturation. As a result of parametric study a constitutive model with anisotropic hardening could predict the behavior of total strain range.

  • The deformation behavior of a $Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass under tensile loading at different range of strain rates and temperatures between 680 K and 740 K were investigated. The variation in the deformation behavior of $Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass which resulted from the crystallization induced during testing was reported. The$Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_5Cu_{30}$ bulk metallic glass has showed either homogeneous or inhomogeneous deformation depending on test condition. It exhibited a maximum elongation of about 560 % at the condition of $407^{\circ}C{\times}\;10^{-4}/s$. The flow behavior exhibited three different types and the flow stress became lower at higher temperatures and lower strain rates. The increase of the time elapsed during heating resulted in the partial crystallization of bulk metallic glass phase and eventually strain hardening and brittle fracture.

(Costin, 1985; Nemat-Nasser & Horii, 1982; Wang & Kemeny, 1993; Jeon, 1998). • In this study, artificial cemented sand made of a few portland cement and Nak-Dong river sand was researched closely to investigate cementing effect quantitatively through unconfined tests and triaxial tests. The peak strength and elastic modulus increased and dilation of cemented sand was restricted by the cementation, but after breakage of the cementation, dilation and negative excess pore water pressure increased. In stress-strain curve, strain-softening behavior appeared in drained condition but strain-hardening behavior was appeared in undrained condition as a result of the increase of effective stress. The test was quantitatively analyzed by multiple regression models, correlating each response variable with input variable. The equations are valid only over the range investigated. Its adjusted coefficient of determination was $0.81{\sim}0.91$, and dry density is important factor for estimating strength of cemented sand.

  • The overlay model is a certain kinds of numerical analysis method to present the material non-lineariy which is represented the baushinger effect and the strain hardening. This model simulates the complex behavior of material by controlling the properties of the layers which like the hardening ratio, the section area and the yield stress. In this paper, the constitutive equation and plastic flow rule of each layer which are laid in the plane stress field are obtained by using the thermodynamics. Two numerical examples were tested for the validity of proposed method in uniaxial stress and plane stress field with comparable experimental results. The only parameter for the test is the yield stress distribution of each layers.

  • The paper describes the mechanical behavior of short concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns with circular section. The efficiency of the steel tube in confining the concrete core depending on concrete strength and the steel tube thickness was examined. Fifteen columns were tested to failure under concentric axial loading. Furthermore, a mechanical model based on the interaction between the concrete core and the steel tube was developed. The model employs a volumetric strain history for the concrete, characterized by the level of applied confining stress. The situation of passive confinement is accounted for by an incremental procedure, which continuously updates the confining stress. The post-yield behavior of the columns is greatly influenced by the confinement level and is related to the efficiency of the steel tube in confining the concrete core. It is possible to classify the post-yield behavior into three categories: strain softening, perfectly plastic and strain hardening behavior. The softening behavior, which is due to a shear plane failure in the concrete core, was found for some of the CFT columns with high-strength concrete. Nevertheless, with a CFT column, it is possible to use high-strength concrete to obtain higher load resistance and still achieve a good ductile behavior.

  • Overlay model had several advantages to describe hysteretic behavior of material and showed good capability for many engineering materials. However, this model is only applicable to material obeying Masing postulate. Some materials such as 316L stainless steel do not follow Masing postulate and show cyclic hardening(or softening) and strain range dependence. Low cycle fatigue tests of 316L stainless steel at 600$^{\circ}C$ were performed to investigate the characteristics of cyclic behavior of non-Masing material. From all tests cyclic softening was observed. There were differences in elastic limit of hysteresis loop according to applied strain range. To consider these features, modified overlay model was developed. Yield stresses of subelements were divided into isotropic and anisotropic part to describe the non-Masing behavior. The plastic strain range memorization was introduced to consider the strain range dependence. The prediction using modified overlay model showed a good accordance to actual hysteresis loops.
