This paper deals with the analytical modeling, and the experimental verification of the strain rate self-sensing method using a hybrid adaptive filter for a cantilevered piezoelectric beam. The piezoelectric beam consists of two laminated lead zirconium titanates (PZT) on a metal shim. A mathematical model of the beam dynamics is derived by Hamilton's principle and the accuracy of the modeling is verified through the comparison with experimental results. For the strain rate estimation of the cantilevered piezoelectric beam, a self-sensing mechanism using a hybrid adaptive filter is considered. The discrete parts of this mechanism are realized by the DS1103 DSP board manufactured by dSPACE$\^$TM/. The efficacy of this method is investigated through the comparison of experimental results with the predictions from the derived analytical model.
This paper provides a review of wearable textile strain sensors that can measure the deformation of the body surface according to the movements of the wearer. In previous studies, the requirements of textile strain sensors, materials and fabrication methods, as well as the principle of the strain sensing according to sensor structures were understood; furthermore, the factors that affect the sensing performance were critically reviewed and application studies were examined. Textile strain sensors should be able to show piezoresistive effects with consistent resistance-extension in response to the extensional deformations that are repeated when they are worn. Textile strain sensors with piezoresistivity are typically made using conductive yarn knit structures or carbon-based fillers or conducting polymer filler composite materials. For the accuracy and reliability of textile strain sensors, fabrication technologies that would minimize deformation hysteresis should be developed and processes to complement and analyze sensing results based on accurate understanding of the sensors' resistance-strain behavior are necessary. Since light-weighted, flexible, and highly elastic textile strain sensors can be worn by users without any inconvenience so that to enable the users to continuously collect data related to body movements, textile strain sensors are expected to become the core of human interface technologies with a wide range of applications in diverse areas.
In the water-filling and preloading test, the sensing cables were installed on the surface of steel spiral case and in the surrounding concrete to monitor the strain distribution of several cross-sections by using Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA), a kind of distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) technology. The average hoop strain of the spiral case was about $330{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ and $590{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ when the water-filling pressure in the spiral case was 2.6 MPa and 4.1 MPa. The difference between the measured and the calculated strain was only about $50{\mu}{\varepsilon}$. It was the first time that the stress adjustment of the spiral case was monitored by the sensing cable when the pressure was increased to 1 MPa and the residual strain of $20{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ was obtained after preloading. Meanwhile, the shrinkage of $70{\sim}100{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ of the surrounding concrete was effectively monitored during the depressurization. It is estimated that the width of the gap between the steel spiral case and the surrounding concrete was 0.51 ~ 0.75 mm. BOTDA based distributed optical fiber sensing technology can obtain continuous strain of the structure and it is more reliable than traditional point sensor. The strain distribution obtained by BOTDA provides strong support for the design and optimization of the spiral case structure.

This paper presents the robust control simulation of a composite beam using self-sensing actuators(SSA). The self-sensing actuator is a new concept for intelligent material, where a single piezoelectric element simultaneously functions as both a sensor and an actuator. In a practical implementation of the self-sensing actuator an electrical bridge circuit is used to measure strain. The circuit could provide significant information about strain in the element if it were well-balanced. Our aim is design a robust controller which guarantees that the performance of a self-sensing actuator is robust against perturbation of the bridge balance and to confirm the advantages of this technique. Simulation results show that the self-sensing actuator driven by the designed controller exhibits excellent performance in suppressing the vibration of a composite beam.

This paper describes the design process of a six-component force/torque (F/T) sensor. The new six-component F/T sensor having leaf spring ends has been developed using a cross beam structure as the basic sensing element. Fundamental strain analysis of both ends fixed beam having a leaf spring structure is performed by finite element analysis. In order to obtain similar output sensing strains from the six component loads and minimize coupling strains, the optimal location of strain gages is determined and the strain gages are connected so that the bridge circuits with four strain gages would be balanced. Using leaf spring ends instead of rigid fixed ends, remarkable increment in output sensing strain can be achieved for two component forces. Several modifications in design result in a similar sensing strain of approximately $400\;{\mu}m/m$ for the six-component forces and moments, and a reduced coupling strain of $0\;{\mu}m/m$ between the forces and moments.

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are electrically conductive. When CNFs are used as fillers in resin, this electrical conductivity can be yielded without adversely affecting the mechanical properties of the resin. When an elastomer is adopted as the resin, a conductive elastomer can then be produced. Due to its flexibility and conductive properties, a large strain sensor based on changes in resistivity may be produced, for strain sensing in flexible structures. In this study, a patch-type large strain sensor using resistivity change in a CNF/elastomer composite was proposed. The measurement limits of the sensor were investigated experimentally, and the limit was found to be 40%, which greatly exceeded the limits of conventional metal-foiled strain gages. Also, the proposed CNF/elastomer large strain sensor can be used to measure flexible materials, while conventional strain gages cannot be used to measure such strains.

Transducers, which are incorporated in control devices for fixed wing aircraft, land vehicles. and weapon systems were designed and manufactured by use of semiconductor strain gages. These transducers consist of three parts; flange mounts, sensing rods, and semiconductor strain gages. In this investigation, we designed cylindrical sensing rods with high sensitivity and developed installation procedures of semiconductor strain gages. The semiconductor strain gage has hish gage factor such that it can produce high resistance change in spite of low strain, but it is so small and fragile that one should handle carefully and sophisticated installation method is needed for good performances. The prototype transducers are manufactured, and then tested about three important factors: sensitivity, linearity, and hysteresis. We got results or 0.084 V/N sensitivity, 0.2% nonlinearity, and 0.5% hysteresis.

The methodology known as "shape sensing" allows the reconstruction of the displacement field of a structure starting from strain measurements, with considerable implications for structural monitoring, as well as for the control and implementation of smart structures. An approach to shape sensing is based on the inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) that uses a variational principle enforcing a least-squares compatibility between measured and analytical strain measures. The structural response is reconstructed without the knowledge of the mechanical properties and load conditions but based only on the relationship between displacements and strains. In order to efficiently apply iFEM to the most common structural typologies of civil engineering, its formulation according to the kinematical assumptions of the Bernoulli-Euler theory is presented. Two beam inverse finite elements are formulated for different loading conditions. Depending on the type of element, the relationship between the minimum number of required measurement stations and the interpolation order is defined. Several examples representing common applications of civil engineering and involving beams and frames are presented. To simulate the experimental strain data at the station points and to verify the accuracy of the displacements obtained with the iFEM shape sensing procedure, a direct FEM analysis of the considered structures is performed using the LUSAS software.
Structural health monitoring and structural vibration control are multidisciplinary and frontier research directions of civil engineering. As intelligent materials that integrate sensing and actuation capabilities, shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit multiple excellent characteristics, such as shape memory effect, superelasticity, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, and high energy density. Moreover, SMAs possess excellent resistance sensing properties and large deformation ability. Superfine NiTi SMA wires have potential applications in structural health monitoring and micro-drive system. In this study, the mechanical properties and electrical resistance sensing characteristics of superfine NiTi SMA wires were experimentally investigated. The mechanical parameters such as residual strain, hysteretic energy, secant stiffness, and equivalent damping ratio were analyzed at different training strain amplitudes and numbers of loading-unloading cycles. The results demonstrate that the detwinning process shortened with increasing training amplitude, while austenitic mechanical properties were not affected. In addition, superfine SMA wires showed good strain-resistance linear correlation, and the loading rate had little effect on their mechanical properties and electrical resistance sensing characteristics. This study aims to provide an experimental basis for the application of superfine SMA wires in engineering.

Thick film mechanical sensors can be categorized into four main areas piezoresistive, piezoelectric, capacitive and mechanic tube. In this areas, the thick film strain gage is the earliest example of a primary sensing element based on the substrates. The latest thick film sensor is used various pastes that have been specifically developed for pressure sensor application. Some elastic materials exhibit a change in bulk resistivity when they are subjected to displacement by an applied pressure. This property is referred to as piezoresistivity and is a major factor influencing the sensitivity of a piezoresistive strain gage. The effect of thick film resistors was first noticed in the early 1970, as described by Holmes in his paper in 1973.
