  • Rapid urbanization increases the risk of hydrologic disasters due to the increase of impervious areas in urban areas. Precipitation characteristics can be transformed due to the rise of global temperatures. Thus urban areas with the increased impervious areas are more exposed to hydrological disasters than ever before. Therefore, low impact development practices have been widely installed to rehabilitate the distorted hydrologic cycle in the urban area. This study used the Stormwater Management Model to analyze the water quantity and quality of the Mokgamcheon which had been severely urbanized, considering future climate scenarios presented by various general circulation models (GCMs). In addition the effectiveness of permeable pavement by 27 sub-watersheds was simulated in terms of water quantity and quality considering various GCMs and then the priorities of sub-watersheds were derived using an alternative valuation index which uses the pressure-state-response framework.

  • Though the upper stream basin area of Gwanpyung-Cheon in Daejeon, Korea is protected as Green Belt Zone, the stream is under constant environmental pressure due to current agricultural practices and infrastructure development in its basin area. To develop appropriate integrated water resources management plan for the stream, it is necessary to consider not only water quality problems but also water quantity aspect. In this study, Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was calibrated and validated with sets of field measurements to predict for future water flow and water quality conditions for any rainfall event. While flow modeling results showed good agreement by showing correlation coefficient is greater than 0.9, water quality modeling results showed relatively less accurate levels of agreements with correlation coefficient between 0.67 and 0.87. Hypothetical basin development scenarios were developed to compare effect on stream water quality and quantity when Low Impact Development (LID) technologies are applied in the basin. The results of this study can be used effectively in decision making processes of urban development Gwanpyung-Cheon area by comparing basin management alternatives such as LID methods.

  • The HEC-HMS model was applied to identify the rainfall-runoff processes for the Anseongchun basin, where the lower part of the stream has been damaged severely by tropical storms in the past. Modeling processes include incorporating with the SCS-CN model for loss, Clark's UH model for transformation, exponential recession model for baseflow, and Muskingum model for channel routing. The parameters were calibrated through an optimization technique using a trial and error method. Sensitivity analysis after calibration was performed to understand the effects of parameters, such as the time of concentration, storage coefficient, and base flow related constants. Two storm water events were simulated by the model and compared with the corresponding observations. Good accuracy in predicting the runoff volume, peak flow, and the time to peak flow was achieved using the selected methods. The results of this study can be used as a useful tool for decision makers to determine a master plan for regional flood control management.

  • Urban flood management(UFM) strategy ought to consider the connections and interactions between existing and new infrastructures to manage stormwater and improve the capacity to treat water. It is also important to demonstrate strategies that can be implemented to reduce the flow at flooding sources and minimize flood risk at critical locations. Although the general theory of spatial impact is popular, modeling guidelines that can provide information for implementation in real-world plans are still lacking. Under such background, this study conducted a modeling research based on an actual target site to confirm the hypothesis that it is appropriate to install green infrastructure(GI) in the source area and to take structural protection measures in the impact area, as summarized in previous studies. The results of the study proved the hypothesis, but the results were different from the hypothesis depending on which hydrological performance indicators were targeted. This study will contribute to demonstrating the effectiveness of strategies that can be implemented to reduce the flow at flooding sources and minimize the risk of flooding in critical locations in terms of spatial planning and regeneration.

  • Urbanization causes many environmental, hydrological and ecological problems such as distortion of the natural water circulation system, increase in nonpoint source pollutants in stormwater runoff, degradation of surface water quality, and damage to the ecosystem. Due to the increase in impervious surface by urbanization, developed countries apply low impact development (LID) techniques as important alternatives to reduce the impacts of urbanization. In Korea, LID techniques were employed since 2012 in order to manage nonpoint source pollutants. LID technology is a technique for removing pollutants using a variety of physical, chemical and biological mechanisms in plants, microorganisms and filter media with the reduced effluence of stormwater runoff by mimicking natural water circulation system. These LID facilities are used in a variety of filter media, but an assessment has not been carried out for the comprehensive comparison evaluation of adsorption and desorption characteristics for the pollutant removal capacity. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the adsorption and desorption characteristics of various filter media used in the LID facilities such as sand, gravel, bioceramic, wood chips and bottom ash etc. in reducing heavy metals(Pb, Cu). In this study, the adsorption affinity for Pb in all filter media was higher than Cu. Pseudo second order equation and Langmuir-3 isotherm are more applicable in the adsorption kinetic model and adsorption isotherm model, respectively. As a result of the desorption experiment, the filter media does not exceed KSLT which is the hazardous substance leaching limit, showing the capability of the filter media in LID. The bioceramic and woodchip as filter medias were evaluated and exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for Pb.

  • A new methodology for selecting spatially variable model control parameter values through consideration of inference models within a Hydroinformatic system has been developed to overcome problems associated with determination of spatially variable control parameter values for both ungauged and gauged catchment. The adopted Hydroinformatic tools for determination of control parameter values were a GIS(Arc/Info) to handle spatial and non-spatial attribute information, the SWMM(stormwater management model) to simulate catchment response to hydrologic events, and lastly, L_BFGS_B(a limited memory quasi-Newton algorithm) to assist in the calibration process. As a result, high accuracy of control parameter estimation was obtained by considering the spatial variations of the control parameters based on landuse characteristics. Also, considerable time and effort necessary for estimating a large number of control parameters were reduced from the new calibration approach.

  • In recent years, the possibility of flooding due to the increase in the incidence of high-frequency rainfall due to abnormal rainfall and the increase in concentrated torrential rain is increasing. Also, the amount of rainwater runoff is increasing due to the increase of the impermeable layer in the city due to the concentration of population due to urbanization and concentration of development. Due to the characteristics of the developed city, it is located in the vicinity of rivers and in the lowlands. For the analysis of inundation in water, using XP-SWMM, which can analyze stormwater pipelines and surface flows, and FLO-2D models that can track flood-sluice curves and rainfall-spill curves, based on hydraulic and hydrological analysis. Inundation analysis was conducted and comparative review was conducted. The patterns of flooding of the two models were compared, and a model suitable for domestic flooding was selected.

  • In recently, the low impact development(LID) is discussed at various fields being related to urban stormwater, non-point source pollution, and quality of life. It is understood as an integrated development tool to induce sustainable development with various value-social, economic, and aesthetic. As concerning the development of waterfront area, the low impact development is interested in environmental planning. But the planning process and factors are not considered in precedent research. This study has two purposes. The one is to understand the planning process and factors of low impact development from literature review. The other is to apply the planning factors using case study and to know the effect of low impact development as the simulation plan. The simulation plan is based on some landuse planning. It is divided into the setting the region for environmental protection and the function of public facilities, spatial planning for enlarging permeable area, and spatial planning for circulation of water. The simulation model uses the LIDMOD2. The 14 planning factors of low impact development is applied to case region. And the effect is about 7~10 percent in reduction of nonpoint source pollution and surface runoff.
