In order to analyze the impacts of climate change, a time and space integrated model was developed in this study using system dynamics and GIS. The model built was used to carry out a simulation on the inundation impact on A-gu of Busan Metropolitan city resulting from the sea level rise scenario of IPCC and storm surge, which is the worst case. Through this, the flooded area and population until 2100 were predicted. Also, the result and significance of each alternative was reviewed improving the model by establishing alternative scenarios of protection, accommodation and retreat as plans of reaction to sea level rise. The combination of system dynamics and GIS has advantages of how the diverse variables change until the target year can be traced and, accordingly, not only the results but also the processes of spatial change can be examined by calculating the value of change process at each time step. The synergy of this model presumed to be a foothold for solving problems which are becoming difficult to predict due to increase in uncertainty and complexity such as the support for decision making for urban resilience to natural disasters.
This study set out to estimate and compare benefits of damage in case of storm surge at the Masan Port by using two of the most representative methodologies used to estimate benefits in port disaster prevention facility construction, namely CVM(contingent valuation method), which estimates the values of non-market goods, and MD-FDA(multi-dimensional flood damage analysis), which had usually been implemented in flood or dam projects. The benefit estimation for 30 years of costs was 2.5689 trillion won for CVM and 2.9596 trillion won for MD-FDA, which indicates that there was no big difference in benefits among disaster prevention facilities. However, in-depth testing should follow to figure out whether MD-FDA can replace CVM, which has been tested with non-market goods, when estimating the benefits of disaster prevention facilities based on those findings.
As a basic data to build a countermeasures against coastal disaster, the conscious survey of people living around the coastal are is needed. This study performed the conscious survey on 5 islands located at Korean southeast ocean including Youngdo of Busan. Among many respondents, 503 effective answers are got and followings are the analyzed results. Among the various kinds of disasters, especially the typhoon(28%), storm surge(19%), earthquake(15%) are selected as menacing disasters in mind to coastal inhabitants. Typhoon(60%) and storm surge(21%) were the representative disasters that the coastal inhabitants experienced. 67% among the respondents get the disaster-related information from TV and/or commercial medias, and other 21% depend on their own experiences. Although 33% of respondents attended the disaster-related training and the training time was less than 2 hours, they answered the training was very helpful. Over 85% among the respondents answered they will evacuate if a disaster occur, but only 19% know the evacuee shelter(s). Except the foods, various living goods are selected and willing to carry with for living at shelter if they have to evacuate.
The coastline of semi-enclosed Hampyung Bay, southwestern coast of Korea, consists largely of erosional sea-cliffs characterized by steep face slope, low in height (less than 3m), and composition of soft reddish soil. Recession rates of the sea-cliffs in the Haeuri coast of Hampyung Bay, which were Quantified by photogrammetry using single aerial photographs taken 1976 and 1990, respectively, were approximately 1${\sim}2m/yr. This value is in good agreement with the field measurement conducted by Chang et al. (1999). Subsequently, the photogrammetry seems to be a very useful method to measure easily long-term coastline change. This severe erosion of sea-cliff in the semi-enclosed bay environment, furthemore, is probably due to combined effects of typhoon or/and storm surges and weak resistance of soil cliff itself.

Costal regions in Korea often suffer severe damages due to wave-induced disasters, storm surge disasters and so on. therefore, many engineers and researchers have devoted their energy to prevent these costal disasters. The development of artificial reefs including sunken vessels is one of their remarkable achievements and various kind of these artificial upwelling structures have been designed and applied. However, the flow characteristics around a Tetrapod under the water has not been investigated experimentally. So in this article, in uniform flow of circulating water channel and some different velocities, PIV measurement has been conducted on the flow characteristics behind a Tetrapod. The results were analyzed on the flow characteristics of both cases of a Tetrapod. Therefore, it can be concluded that the both cases have its own distinctive flow characteristics behind the bluff body; Case A has an steep upstream flow pattern. On the contrary, Case B has an developed downstream flow pattern in the near wake of the Tetrapod. The velocity gradient at position x=150mm of Case-A appears gently up and down But, the velocity gradient at the same position of Case-B appears better highly up and down.
The wave observation system in Korea has been established with an emphasis on pointmeasurement based on in situ instrumentations. However, the system cannot fully investigate the coastal wave-related problems that are significantly localized and intensified with three-dimensional regional geometries. Observation technique that can cover local processes with large time and spatial variation needs to be established. Video imaging techniques that can provide continuous monitoring of coastal waves and related phenomena with high spatial and temporal resolutions at minimum cost of instrumentation risks are reviewed together with present status of implementation in Korea. Practical applications of the video imaging techniques are suggested to tackle with various coastal issues of public concern in Korea including, real-time monitoring of wave runup and overtopping of swells on the east coast of Korea, longshore and rip currents, morphological and bathymetric changes, storm surge and tsunami inundation, and abnormal extreme waves in the west coast of Korea, etc.
Detection of water bodies in land surface is an essential part of disaster monitoring, such as flood, storm surge, and tsunami, and plays an important role in analyzing spatial and temporal variation of water cycle. In this study, a quantitative comparison of different thresholding-based methods for water body detection and their applicability to Kompsat-5 SAR data were presented. In addition, the effect of speckle filtering on the detection result was analyzed. Furthermore, the variations of threshold values by the proportion of the water body area in the whole image were quantitatively evaluated. In order to improve the binary classification performance, a new water body detection algorithm based on the bimodality test and the majority filtering is presented.

As satellite altimetry is being progressed to apply with higher precision to marginal seas, it is necessary to improve correction procedures fer tidal signals in altimetry with more accurate tidal model than the well-known model of Schwiderski. The Bay of Bengal renders many conspicuous coastal oceanographic issues including tide and storm surge interactions along the upper Bangladesh coast. As a first step. tidal regime of semidiurmal tides (M$_2$, S$_2$, $N_2$, $K_2$) and diurnal tides (K$_1$, $O_1$, P$_1$) are computed with a model having a mesh resolution of 1/4 degree over the whole Bay of Bengal. Computed results are discussed with observation and previous Schwideski's tidal map of the region.

In this study 8 nodes parallel linux cluster system is constructed and tested for the evaluation of computational efficiency and reliability of the Yellow Sea tidal hydrodynamics prior to compute storm surge inundation along the west coast of the Korean Peninsular. Computational efficiency increases up to 7 times based on NPB bench-marking test. Simulated results by pADCIRC on reproduction of the Yellow Sea tidal hydrodynamics resemble well with previous studies. According to model parameter tests, bottom friction coefficient, which should be appropriately represented shallow depth along the west coast, is essential factor in simulation.
