  • One of the major obstacles confronted in promoting the rainwater harvesting is the concerns of acid rain and heavy metals. Although there are many data concerning the quality of rainwater precipitation for the study of acid rain, the study on the quality of stored rainwater has been limited. In this study, we monitored the quality of stored rainwater at Galmoe middle school, where a rainwater harvesting system is installed and in use for more than two years. We measured water quality parameters such as pH, Electro Conductivity(EC), Dissolved Oxygen(DO), and some metals (aluminium (Al), chromium(Cr), manganese(Mn), zinc(Zn), copper(Cu), arsenic(As), cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb)). The monitoring period was during one year from September 9th 2003 to August 5th 2004. It was observed that the average pH of stored rainwater is neutral. DO is similar to tap water and EC is lower than tap water. Metal Concentrations are within the concentration specified in Drinking Water Quality Standard. Overall, the stored rainwater quality is good enough for sundry use and there's no threat of acid rain and air pollution, if the rainwater harvesting system is well designed and maintained.

  • The Storm Water Management Model(SWMM) by EPA is a dynamic rainwater-runoff simulation model used for single event or long-term simulation of runoff quantity and quality from primarily urban areas. The SWMM simulation program is operated by the site area, the weather date, conduit plan etc. on reference region. The purpose of this study was to analyze flood area, the duration of flooded and surcharged on the reference region. Without rainwater stored tank, the area of flooded and surcharged on reference area is similar to the area of reference region. But, With rainwater stored tank, the area of flooded and surcharged on reference area is much reduced compared to without rainwater stored tank. According to SWMM simulation results, the rainwater stored tank is located closer to site is more effective for reduction of duration of flooded and surcharged and flow rate.

  • The purpose of this study is to monitor the rainwater flowing from the roof of buildings and to maximize the effectiveness of the rainwater storage. This study also analyses the changes in rainwater characteristics before and after subsequent chlorination disinfection. The stored rainwater was disinfected by chlorine and then analyzed for COD, TN, TP, enteric bacteria, and general microbial population changes over time. There was an observed 99% reduction of enteric bacteria and common microbes within two weeks after chlorine injection. Thus, chlorine disinfection of rainwater improves water quality for long-term storage and future use.

  • Power plants that produce electricity through thermal power plants mainly store coal in outdoor storage yards. In particular, coal is directly exposed to rainwater during rainfall, including torrential rain. There is no separate drainage facility in the outdoor coal yard, and coal is simply stored on the ground. Accordingly, during rainfall, coal dust flows down by rainwater, and a large amount of rainwater that is not drained overflows the outdoor coal yard, overflowing the surrounding facilities and causing environmental pollution. Therefore, in this study, a drainage system was developed for the rapid drainage of an outdoor coal mine, and the quality of the water was evaluated when rainwater mixed with drainage characteristics and coal dust was discharged through the drainage system.

  • To supply substitution water, $2m^3$ of capacity of rainwater harvesting system is designed calculating rainfall, catchment area and LPCD and has a effects to 34.4% of substitution water supply and 237 days of service day. Rainwater of drinking water quality was judged to be suitable except for bacteria problem, however, groundwater is exceeded in nitrate nitrogen, the evaporation residue and also bacteria, which means that the rainwater is suitable for use as water supply. In addition, to consider cost-benefit ratio, economic analysis conducted. The result is that B/C ratio of RWHS (10 years) is 1.70. It means total benefit is bigger than cost. Except to social factor in this study, there are a variety of benefit such as flood or drought prevention, educational effects inspiring water conservation awareness.

  • In this study, rainwater-greywater hybrid system was installed and operated for 1 year in order to evaluate its water quantity, water quality, and economic efficiency in building no. 39. This system was expected to overcome each disadvantages of and maximize each advantages. Low-greywater that was washed up from shower room was treated by MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) and ozone oxidation. Rainwater that was collected from the rooftop was stored in a reservoir, and then transferred to the storage tank that was mixed with treated greywater. After 1 year operating in building no. 39, rainwater and greywater was used to supply $2,599m^3$ of toilet flushing water. In terms of water quality, rainwater was satisfied far the greywater reuse standards except for E.coli. Moreover, low greywater quality was acceptable except for E. coli, BOD, SS, and turbidity. In addition, economic analysis was obtained from benefit-cost ratio (B/C) with 1.11. It implies that the feasibility of the project was reasonable. Furthermore, various research and policy to improve the economic efficiency of water recycling facilities is required to expand the use of water recycling facilities.
