Retailing and Public Policy: A Comparative Study of South Korea and Foreign Countries

  • Purpose - Based on the existing retail policy literature, this study aims to compare Korea with foreign countries, to propose better ideas for the Korean retail market. Research design, data, and methodology - It is necessary to analyze the existing retail regulations after categorizing them into several groups, depending on why governments have regulated retailers and the background for the retail policy. Results - Given that Korean retail regulations have focused on protecting conventional markets, comparing the retail policy objectives of South Korea and foreign countries is difficult. Conclusions - It is necessary examine how to protect independent stores, irrespective of store locations across the country. Rather than limiting the distance between traditional markets and the projected locations suggested by large retailers, various factors such as store size limit, opening and closing times, below-cost selling, land use planning, and competition tests are needed to protect small stores. Further, centralized authority for store operations should be delegated to local governments, to tackle the aggressive expansion of retail giants. To protect independent stores, political background is among the most important factors.

Logistic Regression for Investigating Credit Card Default

  • The increasing late-payment rate of credit card customers caused by a recent economic downturn are incurring not only reduced profit of department stores but also significant loss. Under this pressure, the objective of credit forecasting is extended from presumption of good or bad customers to contribution to revenue growth. As a method of managing defaults of department store credit card, this study classifies credit delinquents into some clusters, analyzes repaying patterns of customers in each cluster, and develops credit forecasting system to manage delinquents of department store credit card using data of Korean D department store's delinquents. The model presented by this study uses Kohonen network, a kind of artificial neural network of data mining techniques to cluster credit delinquents into groups. Logistic regression model is also used to predict repayment rate of customers of each cluster per period. The accuracy of presented system for the whole clusters is 92.3%.

Construction of a 300-Meter Vertical City: Abeno Harukas

  • Abeno Harukas is the tallest building in Japan and is located in Abeno, which is one of the three main railway transport nodes in Osaka. This building has a height of 300 meters, and its lowest levels are 30 meters below ground. It contains a department store, museum, offices, a hotel, and an observatory. In this urban renewal project, a section of the department store that encloses the station was dismantled and replaced by a supertall building complex, while infrastructure was simultaneously constructed, including: upgrades to the station and the existing department store, improved connections to the subway and pedestrian bridges, and a new pedestrian walkway over the road. In this paper, the ingenious erection processes, newly developed technologies, and precise construction management techniques are introduced for Japan's tallest building.

전자상점 성과에 관한 이론적 모형 구축 (Development of the Theoretical Model on Electronic-Store Success)

  • This study developed the ISM (Electronic Store Success Model) by basing upon the revised D&M IS Success Model and reflecting the characteristics of marketing and e business. The theoretical rationale of this model was as following : 1) Though the revised D&M IS Success Model (2002) must be more logical and complete model than the original D&M IS Success Model (1992), it did not reflect characteristics of marketing and e business. 2) In the marketing studios, Service Quality has been suggested as one of basic strategies for success. 3) In e business studies, Trust has been emerging as a potentially important antecedent of e loyalty. 4) There has been a paradigm shift from satisfaction to loyalty in marketing emphasis. 5) Nowadays, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) has been pervaded in many organizations and has supported PCA (Profit Center Accounting) or Channel based Accounting, so it has not been difficult to evaluate financial performance of Electronic Store. The ESM that has six dimensions (System Quality, information Quality. Service Quality, Trust, Loyalty, Financial Performance) and expresses the causal relationship among them was proposed and was compared with BSC (Balanced Scorecard), WebQual, and EWAM (Extended Web Assessment Method). The results showed that the ESM coincides with BSC and contains dimensions of WebQual, and EWAM.

컨테이너 터미널의 자원 부하를 고려한 최적 장치계획 모형 (Yard Planning Considering the Load Profile of Resources in Container Terminals)

  • The main activities of container terminals are to load container freights to vessels, discharge them from vessels, and store them in the storage yard. Container terminals make many operational plans to execute these functions effectively. If the plans do not consider enough the loads of related resources, they may have low actualities. This study discusses the optimal yard planning model which considers various resources, such as the storage yard, yard cranes, internal vehicles, and travel lanes, in container terminals. The model determines the groups and amounts of containers which are stored in each storage block by using the resource profile. The yard planning problem is represented to the multi-commodity minimal cost flow problem and is formulated to the linear programming model. In order to explain the application of the mathematical model, the numerical examples are presented. Additionally, the relationship between the average load ratio and the relocation ratio is discussed.

기계 학습을 이용한 치구 공정 계획 모듈의 개발 (A Development of Fixture Planning Module using Machine Learning)

  • This study intends to develop a fixture planning module as a part of the planning system for cutting. The fixture module uses machine learning method to reuse previous failure results so that the system can reduce the repeated failures. Machine learning is one of efforts to incorporate human reasoning ability into a computerized system. A human expert designs better than a novice does because he has a wide experience in a specific area. This study implements the machine learning algorithm to have a wide experience in the fixture planning area as a human expert does. When the fixture planner finds a setup failure for the suggested operations by a process planner, it makes the process planner store its attributes and other information for the failed setup. Then the process planner applies the learned knowledge when it meets a similar case so that the planner can reduce possibility of setup failure. Also the system can teach a novice user by showing a failed setup with a modified setup.

성인 여성의 의류선물 구매시 위험지각과 구매행동간의 관계 (The Relationship between Risk Perception and Purchasing Behavior of Clothing Gift among Adult Women)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived risk and purchasing behavior of clothing gift among adult women. Data were collected from 258 adult women reside in Kwangiu who have ever been to purchase clothing gift during recent six months using a qusetionaire. Frequency Analysis, Factor Analysis, Correlation Analysis, T-test were carried out in the collected data. The findings were as follows; 1. The types of risks that respondents perceived when they purchased clothing gift were identified as practical-economic risk, the social-psychological risk, the fashionable risk and the time-refunding risk. 2. The higher the self-satisfaction motivation was, the higher the social-psychological risk and the higher the practical motivation was, the higher the practical-economic risk (P<.001). 3. The degree of the perceived risks of the Low Planning Group was higher than that of the High Planning Group (P<.001). 4. When the respondents perceived social-psychological risk high, they considered brand, fashionability, and store type as more important selective criteria and when the practical-economic risk perceived high, practicality, store service were conidered more important (P<.05). 5. When respondents perceived social-psychological and fashionable risk high, they used both personal information and non-personal information high (P<.01). 생산 활동에 참여하는 고령자의 요구를 반영한 농촌주거계획 (The Rural Housing Planning Reflecting the Needs of the Elderly People Engaged in Farming Activities)

  • The objective of this paper is to propose rural housing planning guidelines by conducting a survey on the needs of the elderly people engaged in farming activities and looking into complaints about their houses targeting 120 people from 50s to 70s. The method employed was a survey with questionnaires. The survey results showed the needs of the elderly for the rural housing are different from those of general retired elderly people because they still engage in farming activities even if they grow old. The needs are as follows. First, the respondents show high preference for the foyer storage to store equipments and goods related to agriculture. Second, the respondents have needs for enough kitchen area accommodating their house work and rural life. Lastly, the respondents highly prefer well planned storehouses in the exterior. In addition, they also want the storehouses directly connected with the house because this plan can save their workforce. They recognize storehouses are the most poorly planned space in the rural house because of the unsatisfactory space area and interior space planning. These needs should be reflected on the planning of rural housing for the elderly engaged in farming activities.

Comparison of Dose Statistics of Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy Plan from Varian Eclipse Treatment Planning System with Novel Python-Based Indigenously Developed Software

  • Purpose: Planning for radiotherapy relies on implicit estimation of the probability of tumor control and the probability of complications in adjacent normal tissues for a given dose distribution. Methods: The aim of this pilot study was to reconstruct dose-volume histograms (DVHs) from text files generated by the Eclipse treatment planning system developed by Varian Medical Systems and to verify the integrity and accuracy of the dose statistics. Results: We further compared dose statistics for intensity-modulated radiotherapy of the head and neck between the Eclipse software and software developed in-house. The dose statistics data obtained from the Python software were consistent, with deviations from the Eclipse treatment planning system found to be within acceptable limits. Conclusions: The in-house software was able to provide indices of hotness and coldness for treatment planning and store statistical data generated by the software in Oracle databases. We believe the findings of this pilot study may lead to more accurate evaluations in planning for radiotherapy.

온라인과 오프라인 유통경로의 가격비교에 관한 연구: 점포, 제품, 가격유형에 따른 차이를 중심으로 (Price Comparison between Online and Offline Distribution Channel: Differences of Store type, Product Category and Price type)

  • 본 연구는 기존의 연구들이 간과했던 점포유형, 제품유형, 가격유형을 고려하여 온라인과 오프라인 유통경로에서 가격수준과 가격편차에는 차이가 있는지를 비교하였다. 즉, 제품특성 및 점포 유형, 배송료, 적립금, 사은품 등과 같은 요인들에 따라서 소비자가 부담하는 총가격이 어떻게 달라지는지, 가격수준, 가격편차, 가격변동 빈도가 어떤 차이가 있는지에 대해서 살펴보았다. 그 결과 온라인 점포의 가격수준이 오프라인 점포보다 더 낮았고, 제품유형(대용량/소용량)에 따라서는 순수온라인 점포에서 소용량 상품의 가격수준이 더 낮았으며, 가격편차는 Hybrid 점포의 가격편차가 더 낮게 나타났다. 가격변동은 Hybrid 점포에서 가장 많이 발생했고, 총가격과 배달가격간의 가격편차는 순수온라인 점포에서 특정상품(화장품)을 제외하고는 총가격 기준의 가격편차가 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 가격수준이나 가격편차 등을 고려해 볼 때, 온라인 유통경로가 효율적이거나, 점차 효율적으로 진행되어 가고 있다고 할 수 있었다. 그러나 계절적인 영향이 큰 상품이나, 유통 지배력이 있는 상품의 경우는 순수온라인 생포보다 Hybrid 점포가 더 가격 면에서 효율적인 유통경로로 나타났다.
