  • This study was focused on the investigation of the liquid propellants for the launch vehicle, past, present and future trends in worldwide. In general, storable and hypergolic propellants are used for the military purposes and comparing to this, the kerosine fuel and cryogenic propellants are used for the launching systems. Although liquid propulsion is seemed as a mature technology, the requirements of a renewed interest for space exploration has led to the development of a family of new engines, with more design margins, simpler to use and to produce associated with a wide variety of thrust and life requirements.

  • The powder propellant rocket which uses micron-sized particles as fuel is storable and costly. Functions like thrust control and multiple-ignition can be realized by changing powder mass flow rate. In this paper, we discuss the theoretical performance of bi-propellant and mono-propellant powder rocket. When used as the fluidization gas, helium can improve specific impulse dramatically. The stability of the powder feeding device is preliminarily quantified through metal/N2O powder rocket hot fire tests.

Requirement Analysis of Propulsion System for Active Anti-Ship Missile Decoy (능동형 대함 유도탄 기만기의 추진 시스템 요구 조건 분석)

  • An active anti-ship missile decoy system was designed conceptually to analyze propulsion system requirements and feasibility to use a liquid bi-propellant rocket engine. Overall mass, size, and shape were assumed referring to specifications of Nulka which was developed by US and Australia in 1990s. The propulsion system was assumed to be a 1,000 N-class $H_2O_2$/kerosene rocket engine with a pressurized feed system. A three-degree-of-freedom optimal trajectory was calculated based on the assumptions, and mass budget was designed from the calculation results. It was found that the requirements for the propulsion system is that it shall be operated more than 100 sec; it shall be re-ignitable; it shall have a throttle capability of a range from 35% to 100% when the maximum thrust at sea level is 1,000 N.

A Review of the Technical Development on Ionic Liquids for Hypergolic Propellants (하이퍼골릭 이온성 추진제 연구 개발 동향)

  • Since the late 1990s, the demand for developing green or reduced-toxic storable propellants has been rising to replace the existing toxic propellants. Most of the research activities are focusing on development of new hypergolic fuels and either white fuming nitric acid or hydrogen peroxide is utilized as an oxidizer. The newly-developed hypergolic fuels are classified as three types, catalytic fuel, reactive fuel, and ionic fuel. In the present study, recent R&D trend of ionic liquid propellants is described and the main results in the previous studies are analyzed.
