This study analyzes the material characteristics of stone tools of the Paleolithic period excavated from the Osong site, located at the project site for the creation of the Osong 2nd Life Science Complex, and estimates the provenance of the stone materials. Because the stones had been buried for a long time, their surfaces had become heavily weathered yellow or yellowish-brown, and the magnetic susceptibility values varied from 0 to 15(${\times}10^{-3}SI$). The excavated stone tools were rocks with various magnetic susceptibility values that could not be specified. Five stone tools subjected to destructive analysis were divided into two groups, one with a value of 1-3(${\times}10^{-3}SI$) and the other with a value of 5-9(${\times}10^{-3}SI$), both based on visible characteristics. The results of the thin-section analysis showed that most of the stone tools were basaltic rocks comprising plagioclase, quartz, and pyroxene, and some had iron content as high as 20 wt.%. These findings and the present geological map suggest that the stone tools were not made from the surrounding rocks because there are no areas containing basaltic rocks surrounding Bongsan-ri in Osong-eup. Andesite and tuff are distributed along with basaltic rocks in the Doan-myeon area in Jeongpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, but the distance from the excavation site is too far. To determine whether this region is actually related to the provenance of the raw rock, it is necessary to conduct additional field surveys and comprehensive and precise analyses.
In the stone-lined tombs from Cheongyang Rokpyeong-ri site, several stone-lined tombs corresponding to the Three Kingdoms Period, Unified Silla Period and Goryeo Dynasty were excavated. In this study, the stone properties of petrological, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics from 15 stone-lined tombs were analyzed, the rock species and occupation rate were reviewed, also the provenance area was interpreted. There are five types of rocks used as members of the tombs, including black sandstone, greywacke, slate, conglomerate and gneiss. As a result of magnetic susceptibilities, the rocks of the tombs and presumed provenance are all shown in the same range, and the similarity between the tombs and the source area is high in geochemical behavior characteristics. The stone properties of the tombs are the same as the presumed provenance rocks and is distributed within a 500m around the bedrock of the tombs in the excavation site, so it seems that self-sufficiency was possible on the site without a special procurement system. These stones are interpreted to have been constructed through some trimming without any special technique, but some stone tombs have been confirmed to used homogeneous black sandstone at the bottom of the tombs, so it is believed that there were artificial selection of stones.

This study focused on distribution ratio of stone properties based on material characteristic analysis, provenance presumption and transportation route interpretation of the Sungnyemun stone block foundation. The stone block foundation is composed of pinkish granite (56.0%), reddish granite (4.5%) and leucocratic granite (26.2%) of original stones and pinkish granite of new stones(13.3%). The rock-forming minerals for granites are consisted mainly of quartz, alkali-feldspar, plagioclase and biotite, and are similar geochemical evolution trend of major, rare earth, compatible and incompatible elements. Therefore, it is clear that the rocks are genetically same origin. As a result of magnetic susceptibility measurement, the pinkish and reddish granite of original stones and pinkish granite of new stones showed normal distribution around about 4.00(${\times}10^{-3}SI\;unit$). But the leucocratic granite of original stones were confirmed ilmenite series under about 1.00(${\times}10^{-3}SI\;unit$). As a result of provenance interpretation and transportation route analysis based on the petrological results, the provenance of pinkish granite and reddish granite of original stones are presumed the north slope in Namsan mountain and Naksan mountain. Also, the leucocratic granite of original stones and the pinkish granite of new stones are strongly possible furnished from the south and north slope in Namsan mountain and Naksan mountain, respectively.
The stone artifacts in Bronze age from the Sinsongri sites in Seosan, Korea were studied on material characteristics and provenance presumptions. The use and rock names of the artifacts are a stone before processing, two semifinished stone arrowheads and a grinding stone plate by slates. In addition, there is semifinished stone arrowhead by andesitic rocks. The slate could be observed easily around the site, and the andesitic rock could be confirmed typical occurrences of the all kinds of rocks around the Kanwoldo and Hwangdori, Anmyun area above 10km from the site. As a result of analysis which is comparing between stone artifacts and same kinds of raw material rocks, the stone artifacts made by slates have similar lithology and geochemical characteristics however, the stone artifacts made by andesitic rocks are found a some different part of characteristics to the same kind of raw material rocks. Comparing of major, rare earth, compatible and incompatible elements about stones artifacts made by slates and by the same kinds of raw material rocks have same geochemical patterns. However stone artifacts made by andesites and the raw material rocks are confirmed some differences of geochemistry. Therefore the slate stone artifacts in Sinsongri site suggest that these are domestic-type which are made of the rocks around the site, and it was understood that the andesitic stone artifacts are foreign-type which need to get more geological survey and study about different volcanic artifacts of the site around the area.
Syenite is the name of a rock that has been used since ancient Roman period, but it is not widely distributed worldwide, and cases of its use as a material for Korean stone cultural heritages are very rare. However, the Three-story Stone Pagoda in Beomhak-ri of Sancheong, is composed of syenite, and each stone property has very similar rock phases, mineral compositions, grain sizes, colors and magnetic susceptibilities, indicating that they are all stones of the same rock series. Outcrops of syenite are relative widely distributed in the Beomhak-ri area, and it was mined for use as building stones until recently. This rock is almost identical in overall colors, occurrences, and mineralogical and petrological characteristics to that of the stone pagoda, and the geochemical evolution trends of the rocks are also very similar. In addition, numerous quarrying traces were identified in the same rock around the Beomhaksaji Temple site. In this way, the original stone properties of the Beomhak-ri Stone Pagoda were determined to be syenite because precise petrological and geochemical analysis and provenance interpretation was possible, the syenite was distributed around the temple site, and ancient quarrying traces were scattered in the same rocks. Therefore, it can be interpreted that the Beomhak-ri Stone Pagoda was processed and constructed using self-sufficient stone materials from the temple site area.
We analyzed the provenance and petrographic characteristics for the rock properties from stone-lined tomb and stone chamber tomb at the Dorim-ri site of the Baekje Kingdom, located in Cheonan. The two tombs consist of 10 kinds of rocks including gneiss, diorite, and andesite. The major rock type is gneiss (54.3%), which composes the main chamber walls of the tombs. Diorite (11.3%) and andesite (10.6%) also make up a large percentage of the rocks, tending to be used to fill the space between the main chamber walls. Thus, the stones appear to have been used according to their shape and the disposition of the site, respectively. Investigation of their provenance, confirmed their source area to be near the Ipjang Reservoir, about 1 km away from the site, and their procurement was probably conducted via a waterway. This result might serve as basic data regarding the material procurement system of ancient tomb culture and for preservation measures for archaeological sites.
A derelict bridge called WoljungGyo is being restored in Gyeongju, the capital city of ancient Silla. WoljungGyo was originally built in 760AD, and later rebuilt in 1280AD during the Goryeo Kingdom. The bridge lasted in working condition for at least 520 years. The bridge was uncovered to the remains of both abutments and four piers, with only one or two steps remaining. The provenance of the WoljungGyo stone relics was investigated to decide the type of stone for the restoration works. Field survey were carried out in the whole area of Gyeongju-Si with petrological investigation for the stone relics. Results of the study present that Namsan granite was used in those days for building of the WoljungGyo. It is seems that the used stones were obtained from tor or core stone around the Tongil-jeon and Tap-gok area in the east side of Mt. Namsan.

This study was carried out on scientific conservation treatment based on material characteristics, provenance interpretation, and deterioration diagnosis for seven-storied Jungwon Tappyeongri stone pagoda in Chungju. As a result, main rock of the pagoda is biotite granite with magnetite-series (average $5.86{\times}10^{-3}$ SI unit), containing partly basic xenolith, pegmatite veinlet and feldspar phenocryst. As a result of the provenance presumption of the host rock, a rock around the Songgang stream was identified the same origin. Therefore the rock is appropriate for materials of the pagoda restoration. The deterioration assessment suggested that the pagoda was seriously exfoliated (2.7 to 5.5%), discolored (39.8 to 58.9), and contaminated with repair materials (3.5 to 9.4%), and bioorganisms (19.3 to 24.4%). Accordingly, conservation treatment was carried out based on preliminary investigation for stable conservation of the pagoda. Overall processes were sequentially proceeded by restoration of the replacement stone, cleaning, joining and consolidation. This study sets up an integrated conservation system from preliminary investigation to conservation treatment of the pagoda. Also, the study will contribute for establishing the future-oriented customized conservation treatment.
Daejiguksaptapbi (Tapbi) is a memorial stele which is inscribed with personal history of a state preceptor, Daejiguksa Beopkyeong. The Tapbi comprises tortoise-shaped pedestal, dragon top and body stone, and the body stone is remained in 255 pieces by excavation in Samcheonsaji temple site of Seoul. The Tapbi is composed of tuffaceous breccia for the body, coarse-grained pink feldspar granite for the pedestal and fine-grained granite for the top. As a result of geological survey to find a rock provenance of the Tapbi rock, the tuffaceous breccia is found in the banks of Gangwha straits, and the pink feldspar granite and fine-grained granite are found around the temple site in Mt. Bukhansan. Each rock shows similarities to the Tapbi in lithology and mineralogy. Also, geochemical data of major, some trace and rare earth elements verify their cognation in each rock type. It can be interpreted that the provenance of the body stone is distant as Gangwha area, and the provenance of the pedestal and top stones are near the temple site. The results can be utilized to restore the Tapbi by using the same rocks.

The stone artifacts in Bronze age from the Hyocheon sites in the Gwangju, Korea were studied on the basis of material characteristics and provenance presumptions. The use and rock names of the artifacts are a stone shovel by andesite, the stone grinding pestle by pyrophyllite, the stone sickle by schist and four stone semifinished artifacts by slates. Andesitic stone shovel could be observed easily around the Hyocheon relic site. But, rocks of the stone grinding pestle, the stone sickle, the stone arrowhead and the stone semifinished artifacts could be confirmed typical occurrences of the all kinds of rocks around the Hwasun coal mine area above 10km from the site. These are made the coupled samples with each stone artifact to the same kinds of raw material rocks based on analysis of the lithology and geochemistry. As a result a geochemical evolution trends of both a stone artifact and the rock showed very similar patterns based on normalization using the behavior, enrichment, compatibility and incompatibility of the elements. Therefore, the source rock of the stone shovel was convey from Mudeung mountain possible interpreted that the domestic-type artifacts are distributed in the vicinity of the Hyocheon site. On the other hand, the stone grinding pestle, the stone sickle, the stone arrowhead and the stone semifinished artifacts were convey from the Hwasun coal mine area possible foreign-type stone artifacts interpreted that the source rocks. Consequently, in the foreign-type stone artifacts are should archaeologic research which it can examine various possibilities clearly that the possibility to coming the introduction with the mankind migration, diffusion to dealings of tribe, the captured enemy equipment through the war and the trade with the behavior of the materials.
