To respond to global warming, there is an increasing interest in eco-friendly alternative energy sources. Therefore, unused forest biomass that has been neglected due to a lack of marketability is attracting attention. With the introduction of the "unused forest biomass certification system" in 2019, ways of determining quantity of unused forest biomass have steadily increased. However, there have been reported cases whereby unused forest biomass weighed more than the amount of harvested trees. It was found that it was possible that forest resources that can be used as round wood were mixed with unused forest biomass. In this context, this study aimed to estimate the amount of mixed round wood in the unused forest biomass supply. The relative expression of growing stock/ha versus the amount of final clearing/ha collected was modeled (y=1.490x-94.341, R2=0.861). As a result, it was found that round wood was mixed into the unused forest biomass, contributing to the disparity observed between the weighted forest biomass and the amount of trees harvested. In conclusion, proper declaration and certification procedures should be carried out for the use of forest resources and promoting unused forest biomass usage.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze nutrients dynamics depending on biomass of Menyanthes trifoliata L., the endangered species, in a small closed-type wetland. In order to understand dynamics between Menyanthes trifoliata L. and eutrophication, causal loops and stock-flow diagram were constructed. The result of the model simulation was matched well with monitoring data (Menyanthes trifoliata L. biomass, TN, TP, DO). The model was simulated with 3 scenarios. In case of scenario 1, the initial value of biomass was 0mg/L, and the eutrophic state period was 77 days. In case of scenario 2, the initial value of biomass was 35.8 mg/L, and the eutrophic state lasted for 13 days. In case of scenario 3, the initial value of biomass was 71.6 mg/L, and the eutrophic state was nonexistent. The scenario 3 was selected as planting plan of Menyanthes trifoliata L. Through this study, planting design with an endangered plant was developed to control eutrophication in small closed-type wetland.
Achieving optimal sustainable yields (i.e., avoiding overfishing and maximizing fishery harvest at the same time) is one of the main objectives in fisheries management. Generally, management reference points (MRPs) such as fishing mortalities (Fmsy, F0.1, Fx%) have been suggested for the purpose. In this study, we intended to suggest MRPs for Korea chub mackerel Scomber japonicus stock, using a stochastic catch-at-age model (SCAA) and evaluate whether the current fishing intensity on the stock is appropriate. We used length frequency and catch-per-unit-effort data on the Korea chub mackerel stock collected from the large purse-seine fishery, and yields landed by all fisheries from years 2000 - 2019. We calculated yield per recruit and spawning potential ratio, and projected spawning stock biomass (SSB) under different fishing mortality, assuming annual recruitments were solely controlled by environmental effects (i.e., steepness of 1.0). Some of our major findings and suggestions were that the overfishing threshold would be F46%; i.e., the fishing mortality in the terminal year, 2019 was 0.257/year, which corresponded to F46%.
Background: Species of the genera Eucalyptus, Cupressus, and Pinus are the most widely planted tree species in the country in general and in Chilimo dry Afromontane forest in particular. Eucalyptus covers 90% of the total planted forest area in the country. However, only limited information exists in the country regarding aboveground biomass (AGB), belowground biomass (BGB), growth, and yield. This study was conducted to assess the variables on 25 and 30 years of age for three planted species: Cupressus lusitanica, Eucalyptus saligna, and Pinus patula in Chilimo plantation forest, in the Central Highlands of Ethiopia. A two-times inventory was conducted in 2012 and 2017. A total of nine square sampled plots of 400 ㎡ each, three plots under Cupressus lusitanica, 3 Eucalyptus saligna, and 3 Pinus patula were used for data collection. Data on height, diameter, soil, and tree stumps were collected. Percent C, % N, and bulk density was performed following chemical procedure. Results: The aboveground biomass ranged from 125.76 to 228.67 t C ha-1 and the basal area and number of stems from 3.76 to 25.50 ㎡ ha-1 and 483 to 1175 N ha-1, respectively. The mean annual basal area and volume increment were between 0.97 and 1.20 ㎡ ha-1 year-1 and 10.79 and 16.22 ㎥ ha-1 year-1. Both carbon and nitrogen stock of the planted forest was non-significant among the tree species. Conclusion: The aboveground biomass, growth, and yield significantly varied among the species. Cupressus lusitanica had the highest aboveground biomass, volume, and basal area, while Eucalyptus saligna had the lowest value. To a depth of 1 m, total carbon stored ranged from 130.13 to 234.26 t C ha-1. The total annual carbon sequestration potential was 12,575.18 t CO2 eq. Eucalyptus has the highest carbon stock density and growth rate than other species.
Five microalgal species isolated from the Jeju coast and four microalgal stock strains in hatchery were cultured in order to investigate their adapation to extreme changes in environmental factors such as salinity, water temperatue, adn nutrients. In case of salinity variation, Nitzschia sp. of Bacillariophyceae, Isochrysis galbana of Haptophyceae and Tetraselmis gracilis of Prasinophyceae showed optimum growth at the low salinity of 20 and 25 psu. Amphora coffeaeformis and Chetoceros simplex of Bacillariophyceae, and Pavlova lutheri of Haptophyceae adapted well at the relatively high salinities of 30 and 35 psu. However Phaeodactylum tricornutum of Bacillariophyceae and Chlorella sp. of Chlorophyceae showed euryhaline property In case of water temperature variation, most of all the species studied wer inhibited at 10℃. C. simplex, Nitzschia sp., p. tricornutum, Chlorella sp. and T. gracilis grew well at above 20℃. A. coffeaeformis, I. galbana and P. lutheri adapted also at the high temperature of 30℃. Each microalgal strain showed different growth rates and its maximum biomass. Generally microalgal populations from the Jeju coast grow well in relatively high salinity and high water temperature. Their growth were inhibited at low water temperature, but not likely affected at low salinity. This study indicates that the microalgal populations could not be affected by abnormally low salinity phenomena, which have happened occasionally around the west Jeju coast in summer and have led macrobenthic animals to mass mortality.
Current biomass stock of forest has been calculated by using biomass expansion factors (BEFs) that convert timber volumes to dry weight and stem density. The objective of this study was to estimate stem density values and to develop BEFs that are dependent on tree age classes for Quercus acuta stands in Jeonnam Wando-gun. Sample trees on the three different age classes were harvested to obtain each components biomass with stem analysis. Stem density values as tree age classes were ranged from 0.557 to 0.636. Aboveground BEFs were ranged from 1.168 to 1.324. BEFs were increased with increasing age classes. There was a significant difference between BEFs and stem density values with tree age classes. These results suggest that the reliability of the national carbon stock inventory could be improved by applying age classes BEFs, which are formulated on the basis of representative for Quercus acuta.
This study aimed to assess biomass energy resources available from waste wood due to forest land conversion. Forest land area of 7,806ha on annul average during 2001-2005 was converted to other land use and the growing stock of $266,551m^3$ was felled annually due to the conversion. Biomass energy potential of waste wood due to forest land conversion was estimated to 102,325 tons of biomass on annual average during 2001-2005 of which 57,945 tons were from coniferous forest and 44,379 tons were from broadleaved forest. Biomass energy Potential Per unit area Per year increased for the same period and was estimated to 13.0 tons of biomass on annual average.
Annual biomasses of the hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus, were estimated from the biomass-based cohort analysis (Zhang, 1987), using data of annual catch in weight at age during $1970\~1988$ in Korean waters. Annual biomass of the hairtail was peaked at about 240,000 mt in 1975, and thereafter declined with a slight fluctuation. Adult biomass showed a peak in 1978 with about 55,000 mt. However, it has continuously decreased untill 1980 to the level of 9,000 mt and remained at this level till 1988. Age compositions of the hairtail in the 1980s differed greatly from those in the 1970s. The proportions of older hairtail (>4 years) were very low in the 1980s and even the biomasses of young hairtail $(1\~3\;years)$ were at a low evel in the 1980s compared with the level in 1970s. The 1973 and 1974 year classes appeared to be relatively dominant. The mean value of instantaneous rate of fishing mortality (F) in the 1980s was significantly different from that of the 1910s (P<0.05). Recruitment of the hairtail exhibited a similar trend with stock biomass until 1974, indicating the density-dependent Ricker curve.
The blackfin flounder Glyptocephalus stelleri is a commercially important species in the East Sea of Korea, but its catches and biomass have decreased gradually in recent years. This study estimated the optimal catch (acceptable biological catch, ABC) for the effective management of this species by estimating population ecology parameters and the stock biomass of blackfin flounder in the East Sea of Korea. The estimated instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) of blackfin flounder was 1.0542/year, the survival rate (S) was 0.3485, and the instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) was 0.3637/year. From the values of S and M, the instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality (F) was calculated to be 0.6905/year. The age at first capture was 1.304 years, and the total length was 11.5 cm at that time. On the basis of these parameters, the annual biomass was estimated by a biomass-based cohort analysis using annual catch data in weight by year for 1991-2012 in the East Sea of Korea. The annual biomass peaked in 1997 at about 12,800 mt and then subsequently declined continuously to a level of 10,500 mt in 2004 and to 9,800 mt in 2011 and 2012. The maximum sustainable yield and $F_{0.1}$ were estimated as 3,547 mt and 0.3595/year, respectively. Using these estimations, the ABC was estimated to be 3,571 mt in tier 5, 3,397 mt in tier 4, and 2,622 mt in tier 3.
Forests are the largest carbon (C) sinks in terrestrial ecosystems. Recently, as enhancing forest C sequestration capacity has been proposed as a basic direction of the Republic of Korea's "2050 Carbon Neutral Strategy," accurate estimation of forest C sequestration has been emphasized. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change guidelines, sequestration quantity is calculated from changes in C stocks in forest C pools, such as biomass, deadwood, litter and soil layer, and harvested wood products. However, in Korea, only the overstory biomass increase is now considered the amount of sequestration quantity, so there can be a significant difference from the actual forest C sequestration. In this study, we quantified forest C exchange through C flux measurement using an eddy covariance system and an automated soil chamber system in a 57-year-old Korean pine plantation located in Mt. Taehwa, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do. Then, the net amount of C sequestration was compared with the amount of the overstory biomass increase. We estimated the annual C stock change in the remaining C pools by comparing the net sequestration amount from the C flux measurement with the overstory biomass increase and C stock change in the litter layer. Therefore, the net C sequestration of the Korean pine plantation estimated from the flux measurement was 5.96 MgC ha-1, which was about 2.2 times greater than 2.77 MgC ha-1 of the overstory biomass increase. The annual C stock increase in the litter layer was estimated to be 0.75 MgC ha-1, resulting in a total annual C stock increase of 2.45 MgC ha-1 in the remaining C pools. Our results indicate that the domestic forest is a larger C sink than the current methods, implying that more accurate calculations of the C sequestration capacity are necessary to quantify C stock changes in C pools along with the C flux measurement.
