  • A reduced description of the dynamics of carriers in excited semiconductors is presented. Fristly, a time-convolutionless equation of motion for the reduced density operator is derved from the microscopic Liouville wquation operator method. Secondly, the quantum kinetic equations for intercting electron-hole parirs near band-edge in semiconductors under an extermal optical field are obtained from the equation of motion for the reduced density operator. The non-Markovian optical gain of a driven semiconductor is derived including the many-body effects. plasma screening and excitinic effects are taken into account using as effective Hamiltonian in the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation. it is shown that the line shape of optical-gain spectra gain is enhanced by the exicitonic effects caused by the attrative electron-hole Coulomb interaction and the interference effects (renormalized memory effects) between the extermal driving filed and the intermal driving Filed and the stochastic reservoir of the system.

  • In this study, stochastic responses of a cable-stayed bridge subjected to the spatially varying earthquake ground motion are investigated for variable local soil cases and wave velocities. Quincy Bay-view cable-stayed bridge built on the Mississippi River in Illinois, USA selected as a numerical example. The bridge is composed of two H-shaped concrete towers, double plane fan type cables and a composite concrete-steel girder deck. The spatial variability of the ground motion is considered with the coherency function, which is represented by the components of incoherence, wave-passage and site-response effects. The incoherence effect is investigated by considering Harichandran and Vanmarcke model, the site-response effect is outlined by using hard, medium and soft soil types, and the wave-passage effect is taken into account by using 1000, 600 and 200 m/s wave velocities for the hard, medium and soft soils, respectively. Mean of maximum response values obtained from the analyses are compared with those of the specific cases of the ground motion model. It is concluded that the obtained results from the bridge model increase as the differences between local soil conditions cases of the bridge supports change from firm to soft. Moreover, the variation of the wave velocity has important effects on the responses of the deck and towers as compared with those of the travelling constant wave velocity case. In addition, the variability of the ground motions should be considered in the analysis of long span cable-stayed bridges to obtain more accurate results in calculating the bridge responses.

  • Over the past 50 years, explorative research on the nation's mortality decline patterns has showed a decrease in age-specific mortality rates in all age groups, but there were different improvement patterns in specific mortality rates depending on ages and periods. Greater distinct improvement was observed in mortality rates among women than men, and there was a noticeable improvement in mortality rates in certain groups especially in the more recent decades, revealing a structural change in the overall trends regarding death periods. In this paper, we compare various stochastic mortality models considering cohort effects for mortality projection using Korean female mortality data and further explore the uncertainty related to projection. It also created age-specific mortality rates and life expectancy for women until 2067 based on the results of the analysis, and compared them with future age-specific mortality rates and life expectancy provided by the national statistical office (KOISIS). The best optimal model could vary depending on data usage periods. however, considering the overall fit and predictability, the PLAT model would be regarded to have appropriate predictability in terms of the mortality rates of women in South Korea.

  • A discounted cost model for preventive maintenance of armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters is mathematically derived by combining the deterioration model based on a discrete-time stochastic process of shock occurrence with the cost model of renewal process together. The discounted cost model of condition-based maintenance proposed in this paper can take into account the nonlinearity of cumulative damage process as well as the discounting effect of cost. By comparing the present results with the previous other results, the verification is carried out satisfactorily. In addition, it is known from the sensitivity analysis on variables related to the model that the more often preventive maintenance should be implemented, the more crucial the level of importance of system is. However, the tendency is shown in reverse as the interest rate is increased. Meanwhile, the present model has been applied to the armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters. The parameters of damage intensity function have been estimated through the time-dependent prediction of the expected cumulative damage level obtained from the sample path method. In particular, it is confirmed that the shock occurrences can be considered to be a discrete-time stochastic process by investigating the effects of uncertainty of the shock occurrences on the expected cumulative damage level with homogeneous Poisson process and doubly stochastic Poisson process that are the continuous-time stochastic processes. It can be also seen that the stochastic process of cumulative damage would depend directly on the design conditions, thus the preventive maintenance would be varied due to those. Finally, the optimal periods and scale for the preventive maintenance of armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters can be quantitatively determined with the failure limits, the levels of importance of structure, and the interest rates.

  • This study presents a sensitivity analysis method for stochastic user equilibrium of multi-modal network flows. We consider a multi-modal network consisting of a road network for passenger cars physically separated from a transit network for public transport. We first establish a sensitivity analysis method with respect to arbitrary link parameters and perform a sensitivity analysis with respect to link capacity and transit line frequency as practical link parameters. Next, We establish a sensitivity analysis method and perform the sensitivity analysis with respect to modal split by passenger car and public transit. As with the elasticity of economics, these results can be important information for analyzing changes in travel behavior due to the changes in operation and policy of transportation facilities, as well as for analyzing the effects of these operational changes and policies. These results also can be utilized as a tool to constitute a multi-modal network design problem by using cooperative game theory.

  • It is very important to understand the intention of a target ship to prevent collisions in multiple-ship situations. However, considering the intentions of a large number of ships at the same time is a great burden for the officer who must establish a collision avoidance plan. With a distributed algorithm, a ship can exchange information with a large number of target ships and search for a safe course. In this paper, I have applied a Distributed Stochastic Search Algorithm (DSSA), a distributed algorithm, for ship collision avoidance. A ship chooses the course that offers the greatest cost reduction or keeps its current course according to probability and constraints. DSSA is divided into five types according to the probability and constraints mentioned. In this paper, the five types of DSSA are applied for ship collision avoidance, and the effects on ship collision avoidance are analyzed. In addition, I have investigated which DSSA type is most suitable for collision avoidance. The experimental results show that the DSSA-A and B schemes offered effective ship collision avoidance. This algorithm is expected to be applicable for ship collision avoidance in a distributed system.

  • Purpose - Recent issues such as vessel enlargement, strengthening of environmental regulations, and port smartization are expected to increase costs and intensify competition in the port industry. In the new normal era, when external growth has reached its limit, the efficient operation of ports is becoming indispensable for achieving sustainable growth. This study aims to identify the determinants of inefficiency by examining the cost structure and efficiency of container terminals in Korea and furthermore propose the political implications to derive the maximization of efficiency. Design/methodology - This study estimates the cost function of container terminal operators and identifies the efficiency of container terminals using stochastic cost frontier (SCF) in the first stage. In the second step, the SCF results are compared with the data envelopment analysis (DEA). Last, this paper proposes efficiency determinants on container terminal operation to establish appropriate strategies. Out of the 29 container terminal operators in South Korea, 13 operators participated in the survey. The translog cost function was estimated utilizing a total of 116 observations collected over the 2007-2017 period. Findings - Empirical analysis shows that economies of scale exist in Korea's container ports, which provides a rationale for the government's policy to establish the global terminal operator by integrating small terminal operators to enhance competitiveness. In addition, as a result of the determinants analysis, container throughput, weight of direct employment costs, and labour cost share have positive effects on improving cost efficiency, while inefficiency increases as the length of quay increases. More specifically, cost efficiency improves as the proportion of direct employment costs to outsourcing service costs increases. Originality/value - This study contributes to analyzing the inefficiency factors of container terminals through efficiency analysis with respect to a cost function. In addition, this study proposes the practical and political implications, such as establishing a long-term manpower pool, the application of the hybrid liner terminal system, and the construction of a statistical data system, to improve the cost inefficiency of terminal operators.

  • Once a response spectrum is estimated for the site, if there is a need of generating realistic earthquakes time histories considering seismic sources and path effects, one alternative is to use statistical phase characteristics based on real earthquake records other than assuming arbitrary duration and envelope curves. In this study, statistics of group delay times derived from Japanese strong earthquake data were used for phase generation to fully capture the stochastic property of earthquakes. The result shows that simulated earthquake time histories can be generated according to earthquake magnitude and distances with target response spectrum.

  • In this work, the behavior of vibratory hub loads induced due to the uncertainties of composite material properties for each of the participating rotor blades is investigated. The random material properties of composites available from the existing experimental data are processed by using the Monte-Carlo simulation technique to obtain the stochastic distribution of sectional stiffnesses of composite blades. The coefficients of variation (standard deviation divided by the mean) obtained from the sectional stiffness constants are used as an input to the comprehensive aeroelastic analysis code that can evaluate the hub loads of a rotor system. It is found that the uncertainty effects of composite material properties inevitably bring a dissimilarity to the rotor system. The influence of hub vibration response with respect to the individual stiffness (flatwise bending, chordwise bending and torsion) changes is also identified.
