  • This study was carried out to establish a method for the detection of irradiated glutinous rice by measuring pulsed photostimulated luminescence (PPSL) and viscometric properties. Viscosity was determined using a Brookfield DV-III rotation viscometer at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and measured at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, and 210 rpm. All irradiated samples indicated a decrease in viscosity with increasing stirring speeds (rpm) and irradiation doses. Treatments with 2∼5 kGy significantly decreased the viscosity. The photon counts of the irradiated glutinous rice were measured by PPSL and the photon counts of the non-irradiated and irradiated glutinous rice measured immediately after irradiation exhibited an increase with increasing irradiation dose. The photon counts of irradiated glutinous rice almost disappeared with the lapse of time when stored under normal room conditions, but was still possible to detect after 12 months of darkroom storage. Consequently, these results indicate that the detection of irradiated glutinous rice is possible by both viscometric and PPSL methods.

  • Low pressure or vacuum carburizing(LPC) has undergone major further developments since 1980 and now it has achieved industrial maturity. The advantage of low pressure vacuum carburizing over gas carburizing is not only the creation of surface entirely free of oxide and environmentally friendly but also a reduction in batch times, lower gas and energy consumption and the prevention of soot. In this study the experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of vacuum atmosphere in the heating furnace. Heat transfer rate and uniformity of temperatures of test samples in the pressure range of a few 0.1torr was examined on a test charge of 100kg. It is found that the fuel saving rate due to decreasing heating time reach to 20% in the vacuum heating mode as compared with atmospheric heating mode. Also the uniformity of temperatures in the samples was improved significantly in the vacuum heating mode. Also the effects of the RC fan for stirring atmosphere inside furnace was examined. Results shows RC fan appears to provide a reasonable tool for improving uniformity of temperature in the atmospheric heating mode.

  • In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of friction stir welding(FSW) for joining carbon steels, microstructures and mechanical properties of friction stir welded carbon steels with different grain structures were investigated. In comparison of O-type stir zone(SZ) appeared in various aluminium alloys, configuration of SZ in friction stir welded carbon steels displayed U-type. Plastically deformed pearlite band structure was identified to surround the SZ, indicating the existence of so-called thermo-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ). However, the TMAZ of carbon steels was much narrower than that of Al alloys. The microstructures of both stir zone and TMAZ revealed bainite matrix in a conventional carbon steel for shipbuilding, while, in the same region, ferrite matrix microstructures were formed in a low carbon fine grained steel. The conventional carbon steel showed superior stirring workability to that of the fine grained carbon steel. The yield and tensile strength of the friction stir welded joints were comparable to those of the base metals, and the elongation in welded joints demonstrated excellent ductility. Absorbed energy in SZ of the fine grained carbon steel was ten times higher than that obtained from conventional submerged arc weld metal of the same steel. Based on these results, the application FSW to carbon steels was found to be feasible.

  • Zinc oxide is the most attractive material due to the large direct band gap (3.37 eV), excellent chemical and thermal stability, and large exciton binding energy (60 meV). Recently, ZnO nanorods were used as the high efficient antireflection coating layer of solar cells based on silicon (Si). In this reports, we studied the effects of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) treatment on optical properties of ZnO nanorods. For fabrication of ZnO nanorods, there are many methods such as hydrothermal method, sol-gel method, and metal organic chemical vapor deposition method. Among of them, we used the conventional wet chemical method which is simple and low temperature growth. In order to synthesize the ZnO nanorods, the ZnO films were deposited on Si substrate by RF magnetron sputtering at room temperature and the samples were dipped to aqua solution containing the zinc nitrate and hexamethylentetramines (HMT). The synthesis process was achieved in keeping with temperature of $90-95^{\circ}C$ and under constant stirring. The morphology of ZnO nanorods on glass and Si was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. For the analysis of antireflection performance, the reflectance and transmittance were measured by spectrophotometer. And for analyzing the effects of RTA treatment on ZnO nanorods, crystalline properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction measurements and optical properties was estimated by photoluminescence spectra.

  • In this study, the activated red mud was used as a new and appropriate adsorbent for the removal of ferrocyanide and ferricyanide from aqueous solution. Predicting the removal percentage and adsorption capacity of ferro-ferricyanide by activated red mud during the adsorption process is necessary which has been done by modeling and simulation. The artificial neural network (ANN) was used to develop new models for the predictions. A back propagation algorithm model was trained to develop a predictive model. The effective variables including pH, absorbent amount, absorbent type, ionic strength, stirring rate, time, adsorbate type, and adsorbate dosage were considered as inputs of the models. The correlation coefficient value ($R^2$) and root mean square error (RMSE) values of the testing data for the removal percentage and adsorption capacity using ANN models were 0.8560, 12.5667, 0.9329, and 10.8117, respectively. The results showed that the proposed ANN models can be used to predict the removal percentage and adsorption capacity of activated red mud for the removal of ferrocyanide and ferricyanide with reasonable error.

  • Magnetic biochar produced from pyrolysis of dairy cattle manure was used to develop an effective sorbent for arsenic purification from aqueous solution. Biomass and magnetized biomass were pyrolyzed in a tube furnace with 10 ℃/min heating rate at 450 ℃ under nitrogen flow of 100 cm3/min for 2 h. Biochars were characterized by SEM-EDX, BET, XDR, FTIR, TGA, zeta potential analysis. The resultant biochar and magnetic biochar were opposed to 50-100-500 ppm As(V) laden aqueous solution. Adsorption experiments were performed by using ASTM 4646-03 batch method. The effects of concentration, pH, temperature and stirring rate on adsorption were evaluated. As(V) was successfully removed from aqueous solution by magnetic biochar due to its highly porous structure, high aromaticity and polarity. The results suggest dairy cattle manure pyrolysis is a promising route for managing animal manure and producing a cost effective biosorbent for efficient immobilization of arsenic in aqueous solutions.

  • In this study, a new type of composite material combined with carbonyl iron, a relatively strong ferromagnetic material, was prepared to overcome the current application limitations of Prussian blue, which is effective in removing radioactive cesium. The surface of the prepared composite was analyzed using SEM and XRD, and it was confirmed that nano-sized Prussian Blue was synthesized on the particle surface. In order to evaluate the cesium removal ability, 0.2 g of the composite prepared for raw cesium aquatic solution at a concentration of 5 ㎍ was added and reacted, resulting in a cesium removal rate of 99.5 %. The complex follows Langmuir's adsorption model and has a maximum adsorption amount (qe) of 79.3 mg/g. The Central Composite Design (CCD) of the Response Surface Method (RSM) was used to derive the optimal application conditions of the prepared composite. The optimal application conditions achieved using Response optimization appeared at a stirring speed of pH 7, 17.6 RPM. The composite manufactured through this research is a material that overcomes the Prussian Blue limit in powder form and is considered to be excellent economically and environmentally when applied to a cesium removal site.

  • As the amount of high-capacity secondary battery waste gradually increased, waste secondary batteries for industry (high-speed train & HEV) were recycled and materialization studies were carried out. The precipitation experiment was carried out with various conditions in the synthesis of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 material using a Taylor reactor. The raw material used in this study was a leaching solution generated from waste nickel-based batteries. The nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) precursor was prepared by the Taylor reaction process. Material analysis indicated that spherical powder was formed, and the particle size of the precursor was decreased as the reaction speed was increased during the preparation of the NCM. The spherical NCM powder having a particle size of 10 ㎛ was synthesized using reaction conditions, stirring speed of 1000 rpm for 24 hours. The NCM precursor prepared by the Taylor reaction was synthesized as a cathode material for the LIB, and then a coin-cell was manufactured to perform the capacity evaluation.

  • Pollution purification using titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) photocatalyst has attracted a great deal of attention with increasing number of relent environmental problems. Currently, the application of TiO$_2$ photocatalyst has been focused on purification and treatment of waste water. However. the use of conventional TiO$_2$ powder photocatalyst results in disadvantage of stirring during the reaction and of separation after the reaction. And the usage of artificial UV lamp has made the cost of photocatalyst treatment system high. Consequently, we herein studied the pilot-scale design to aid in optimization of the energy-saving process for more through development and reactor design by solar light/UV lamp/ TiO$_2$system. In this study, we manufactured the TiO$_2$sol by sol-gel method. According to analysis by XRD, SEM and TEM, characterization of TiO$_2$ sol were nano-size (5-6 nm) and anatase type. Inorganic binder (SiO$_2$) was added to TiO$_2$ lot to be coated for support strongly, and support of ceramic bead was used to lower separation rate that of glass bead The influences were studied of various experimental parameters such as TiO$_2$ quantity, pH, flow rate. additives, pollutants concentration, climate condition and reflection plate by means of reaction time of the main chararteristics of the obtained materials. In water treatment system, variable realtor as solar light/ or UV lamp according to climate condition such as sunny and cloudy days treated the phenol and E-coli(Escherichia coli) effectively.

  • In this study, water in oil (W/O) emulsion fuel was prepared with surfactant mixture of OIMS90 and NP12 by varying ratio of water to bunker-C oil, surfactant concentration and composition, emulsification time, stirring intensity, temperature and mixing time. Diesel engine performance and exhaust emissions were measured and analyzed with prepared emulsified fuel and compared with those measured using bunker Coil. The results indicated that bunker C emulsion fuel stabilized by surfactant mixture of OIMS90 and NP12 is efficient in reducing emissions of particulate matter, $NO_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $SO_2$. The biggest reduction in exhaust emission was achieved by using emulsion fuel prepared by OIMS90/NP12 = 4 : 6, 500 ppm of total surfactant concentration and 10% water content at $80^{\circ}C$. Boiler efficiency test measured with emulsion fuel showed excellent energy efficiency compared with bunker C oil.
