  • The response of a 1:5 scale 3-story masonry-infilled RC frame which was designed only for gravity loads were simulated by using a nonlinear analysis program, RUAUMOKO 2D. The objective of this study is to understand behavior of masonry-infilled panel and to verify the correlation between the experimental and analytical responses of a masonry-infilled RC frame. It is concluded from this comparison that the strength, stiffness and local behavior of the structure can be predicted with some reliability using this macro-model.

  • Study on the inelastic response of bare and masonry infilled Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames repaired using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) subjected to quasi- static loading is presented in the work. The hysteresis behaviour, stiffness retention, energy dissipation and damage index are the parameters employed to analyze the efficacy of FRP strengthening of bare and brick in-filled RC frames. It is observed that there is a significant improvement in load carrying capacity of brick infilled frame over bare RC frame. Also FRP strengthened brick infilled frame performs much better than FRP repaired bare frame under quasi static loading. Repair and retrofitting of brick infilled RC frame shows an improved load carrying and damage tolerance capacity than control frame.

  • This paper evaluates dynamic performance of a cab over type large-sized truck for estimating the effects of frame's torsional characteristics using a computer model. The computer model considers two mounting methods of frame, flange mounting and web mounting. Frame is modeled by finite elements using MSC/NASTRAN In order to consider the flexibility of frame. The torsional test of the frame is conducted In order to validate the modeled finite element model. A load cell is used to measure the load applied to the frame. An angle sensor is used to measure the torsional angle. An actuator is used to apply a load to the frame. To estimate the effects of frame's torsional characteristics on dynamic performance, simulations are performed with the flange mounting and web mounting frame. Simulation results show that the web mounting frame's variations of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate are larger than the flange mounting frame's variations, especially in the high velocity and the second part of the double lane course.

  • Currently, polyurethane (PU) foam is used in most refrigerators as a thermal insulator, whereby the material contributes to structural stiffness by joining the refrigerator cases; however, refrigerator PU foam induces a low thermal efficiency and results in environmental contamination. To resolve these issues, we applied the vacuum insulated panel (VIP) instead of PU form in the design of a new refrigerator type, whereby the VIP significantly contributes to the rectification of the previously mentioned issues. The VIP structure, however, cannot effectively hold refrigerator cases, so the present study investigated a new frame-structure concept by evaluating the stiffness using the topology optimization of refrigerator cases. Lastly, a refrigerator prototype comprising an optimal frame structure was built and subject to a stiffness test, and a comparison of the test results with those of a conventional refrigerator show that the structural stiffness of the prototype is sufficiently effective.

  • In the design of tall reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings, the serviceability stiffness criteria in terms of maximum lateral displacement and inter-story drift must be satisfied to prevent large second-order P-delta effects. To accurately assess the lateral deflection and stiffness of tall R/C structures, cracked members in these structures need to be identified and their effective member flexural stiffness determined. In addition, the implementation of the geometric nonlinearity in the analysis can be significant for an accurate prediction of lateral deflection of the structure, particularly in the case of tall R/C building under lateral loading. It can therefore be important to consider the cracking effect together with the geometric nonlinearity in the analysis in order to obtain more accurate results. In the present study, a computer program based on the iterative procedure has been developed for the three dimensional analysis of reinforced concrete frames with cracked beam and column elements. Probability-based effective stiffness model is used for the effective flexural stiffness of a cracked member. In the analysis, the geometric nonlinearity due to the interaction of axial force and bending moment and the displacements of joints are also taken into account. The analytical procedure has been demonstrated through the application of R/C frame examples in which its accuracy and efficiency in comparison with experimental and other analytical results are verified. The effectiveness of the analytical procedure is also illustrated through a practical four story R/C frame example. The iterative procedure provides equally good and consistent prediction of lateral deflection and effective flexural member stiffness. The proposed analytical procedure is efficient from the viewpoints of computational effort and convergence rate.

  • An improved method for evaluating effective buckling length of semi-rigid frame with inelastic behavior is newly proposed. Also, generalized exact tangential stiffness matrix with rotationally semi-rigid connections is adopted in previous studies. Therefore, the system buckling load of structure with inelastic behaviors can be exactly obtained by only one element per one straight member for inelastic problems. And the linearized elastic stiffness matrix and the geometric stiffness matrix of semi-rigid frame are utilized by taking into account 4th terms of taylor series from the exact tangent stiffness matrix. On the other hands, two inelastic analysis programs(M1, M2) are newly formulated. Where, M1 based on exact tangent stiffness matrix is programmed by iterative determinant search method and M2 is using linear algorithm with elastic and geometric matrices. Finally, in order to verify this present theory, various numerical examples are introduced and the effective buckling length of semi-rigid frames with inelastic materials are investigated.

  • The purpose of this study is to optimize the plate thickness of the main frame of a construction equipment. For this, the load history at the joints of the main frame was evaluated using mechanism and finite element analysis. With the load data, the stress and the stiffness at the main frame was evaluated and the fatigue life at each weld joint of the main frame was assessed with the change of the plate thickness. Based on the results of this study, the proper plate thicknesses of the frame of the construction equipment were proposed.

  • This study presents the development of a new aluminum seat frame for the commercial bus. Back moment and seat belt anchorage analysis of the conventional steel seat frame was conducted as a base model. Effective aluminum section dimensions for aluminum pipe were calculated from equivalent stiffness and equivalent weight study. Back moment and seat belt anchorage strength with the developed aluminum seat frame were compared to those of the base model. Additionally, to pass the fatigue test, shape modification of side frame assembly was conducted. From this study we could reduce the weight of seat frame more than 5 kg. And the current analysis model and procedure can provide useful informations in designing a new commercial car seat and can reduce the overall design cost and time.

  • High-rise residential buildings these days tend to adopt a building frame system as primary earthquake resisting structural system for some architectural reasons. But there exist several ambiguities in designing such building frame systems according to current codes with regards to : the effective stiffness property of RC cracked section in static and dynamic analyses, analytical model to evaluate story drift ratio, and deformation compatibility requirements of frames. The comparative study for these issues by appling KBC 2005 to a typical building frame system shows that demands of member strength and story drift ratio can be different significantly depending on engineer's Interpretation and application of code requirements. And a building frame system can be noneconomical, compared with the dual system, because of higher demands on strength or ductility in both frames and shear walls.
