Full-scale test of dampers for stay cable vibration mitigation and improvement measures

  • This paper reported test of full-scale cables attached with four types of dampers: viscous damper, passive Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper, friction damper and High Damping Rubber (HDR) damper. The logarithmic decrements of the cable with attached dampers were calculated from free vibration time history. The efficiency ratios of the mean damping ratios of the tested four dampers to theoretical maximum damping ratio were derived, which was very important for practical damper design and parameter optimization. Non-ideal factors affecting damper performance were discussed based on the test results. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness were discussed in detail and compared theoretically. Approximate formulations were derived and verified using numerical solutions. The critical values for non-dimensional concentrated mass coefficient and negative stiffness were identified. Efficiency ratios were approximately 0.6, 0.6, and 0.3 for the viscous damper, passive MR damper and HDR damper, respectively. The efficiency ratio for the friction damper was between 0-1.0. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness on cable damping were positive as both could increase damping ratio; the concentrated mass was more effective than negative stiffness for higher vibration modes.

Effect of Particle Shape and Size of Calcium Carbonate on Physical Properties of Paper (탄성칼슘에 성상이 종이물성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was intended to investigate the proper shape and size of calcium carbonate for the improvement of paper properties and its end use performance. We loaded calcium carbonate of various shapes and size in the handsheet and measured their physical and optical properties. Results obtained from the study are summarized as follows : 1. Due to different particle shapes and sizes, precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) contributed greater to bulk improvement than ground calcium carbonate (GCC). Scalenohedral form of PCC produced the bulkiest sheet, GCC made the sheet bulkier as average particle size increases. 2. Tensile strength increased as average particle size was increasing. GCC kept tensile strength more effectively than PCC. The effect of particle size on tensile strength was much more pronounced as filler addition level was increasing. 3. Over the average particle size of 6.99$\mu$m, GCC gave much higher burst strength and internal bond than PCC did. In the filler levels of 20% and 30%, GCC by using bigger size fillers showed 50~100% improvement in some cases than PCC at the same filler content. 4. Tear strength increased as average particle size was increasing. At the filler level of 30%, PCC decreased tear greatly. 5. Over the average particle size of 13.56$\mu$m, GCC kept bending stiffness greater than PCC. Due to its shape, Scalenohedral form of PCC showed higher stiffness than others at the same particle size. 6. Cubic and acicular form of PCC improved light scattering coefficient very effectively. Light scattering coefficient of GCC decreased as average particle size increased. 7. Both of particle shape and size of filler were important factor in developing optical properties and bending stiffness.   • This study is concerned with the numerical investigation of dynamic characteristics of 2.5MW-class wind turbine gearbox in which the misalignment improvement of plenary gear shafts by the flexible pins and the dynamic impact response are analyzed by the finite element method. The tooth contact between gears is modelled using the line element having the equivalent tooth stiffness and the contact ratio to accurately and effectively reflect the load transmission in the internal complex gear system. The equivalent tooth stiffness is calculated by utilizing the tooth deformation analysis and the impulse torque is applied to the input shaft for the dynamics response characteristic analysis. Through the numerical experiments, the equivalent tooth stiffness model was validated and the misalignment improvement of planetary gear shafts was confirmed from the comparison with the cases of fixed shafts at one and both ends.

  • Optical tables provide a platform for the establishment and test of measurement systems which use Laser. Therefore, not only static characteristics such as surface flatness, static stiffness and etc. but dynamic response characteristics is very important design parameter. The dynamic stiffness is generally estimated through the modal test, and compliance is used as a representative performance standard. Recently there is an example of defining the dynamic deflection coefficient and using it as a new performance standard of the dynamic stiffness, but it is not generalized yet in industry. In this study, we verify the validity of existing DDC calculus by making an experiment on granite. And for improvement in damping performance of optical tables, we are going to evaluate the effect of fillers on the compliance, then develop an epoxy adhesive based on the result of this experiment.

  • This paper describes a procedure to improve road noise using DPDS estimation. We can estimate a body local stiffness at chassis mounting point where the path of road input vibration by DPDS with experiment and FE simulation. DPDS result from FE model has a good correlation with experiment data. FE model DPDS shows weak points among chassis mounting points. Body panel thickness and shape were changed to meet DPDS target. Improved DPDS of critical points makes a road noise level lower.

  • In the recent day, shielding can was made of permalloy materials for automobile display instrument. The good roundness has an effect on magnetic property such as the low coercivity and the high permeability. But the products having the roundness is transformed by the heat treatment, the sending to the company and the assembly process. So for the stiffness of the edge, it is necessary for hemming process to be added in the deep drawing process. And it has the good appearance to create a smooth edge rather than a razor edge with urr. In this paper, it is controlled to get the best hemming product by the Pre-hemming angle($105^{\circ}$, $120^{\circ}$, $135^{\circ}$). And Possible process and tool design modification, which may lead to quality improvement in hemming were tested experimentally and using FEM. The commercial finite element program PAM-STAMPTM was used to simulate the pre-hemming process and hemming process, and the predictions were compared with experimental results according to the pre-hemming angle.

Position/Force Control of Robotic Manipulator with Fuzzy Compensation (퍼지 보상을 이용한 로봇 매니퓰레이터의 위치/힘제어)

  • An approach to robot hybrid position/force control, which allows force manipulations to be realized without overshoot and overdamping while in the presence of unknown environment, is given in this paper. The manin idea is to used dynamic compensation for known robot parts and fuzzy compensation for unknown environment so as to improve system performance. The fuzzy compensation is implemented by using rule based fuzzy approach to identify the unknown environment. The establishment of proposed control system consists of following two stages. First, similar to the resovled acceleration control method, dynamic compensation and PD control based on known robot dynamics, kinematics and estimated environment stiffness is introduced. To avoid overshoot the whole control system is constructed with overdamping. In the second stage, the unknown environment stiffness is identified by using fuzzy reasoning, where the fuzzy compensation rules are obtained priori as the expression of the relationship betweenenvironment stiffness and system. Based on the simulation result, comparison between cases with or without fuzzy identifications are given, which illustrate the improvement achieced.

A Study on Composite Ground Effects of Sand Piles (샌드파일 설치지반에서의 복합지반효과)

  • Sand pile is one of the widely used ground improvement methods. Sand pile improved ground will have composite ground effects, even though the primary purpose is the accelerated consolidation. However, the consolidation of sand pile improved ground as a composite ground is substantially under developed. This study investigate the effect of composite ground for relatively low volume displacement sand piles. Plate bearing tests and earth pressure cell measurements are performed. It turned out that the contribution of sand pile as a load bearing mechanism is not substantial. However the bearing capacity of the surrounding clayey soil is increased by sixty percent, and it cause the stiffness change during consolidation. Therefore it is expected that, the effect of increased stiffness of sand pile improved ground is influenced by change of ground stiffness.

  • In this study we conduct the optimal spot-weld layout design of vehicle body structure considering dynamic stiffness and side impact. We conduct both linear static analysis and nonlinear analysis with a baseline model to verify the process. 13 design variables will be selected for the effect analysis. Then, topology optimization is conducted to each selected design variable. The design constraints are formulated to improve the dynamic stiffness and side impact performance. Objective function is to set the density of weld component. Optimal spot-weld layout design are compared with the baseline model to show the improvement.

  • A practical process to optimize engine mounts on construction equipment is presented in this research. Transmitted force from the engine is estimated by using stiffness of the mount rubber which varies with frequency, amplitude and pre-load, and by the engine excitation force that comes from piston mass and gas pressure and so on. The transmitted force is measured through TPA(Transfer Path Analysis) and is then compared with the estimated force. The optimum mount position and stiffness are solved using MATLAB. The result shows the improvement on engine mount vibration.
