  • One of the most common applications of ferrocement is the manufacturing of thin stiffened plates which are prone to buckling. This study focuses on the investigation of the behavior of a ferrocement plate, stiffened in both directions by means of an appropriate grid of ribs. In the present paper detailed three-dimensional numerical Finite Element models are formulated for the simulation of the behavior of the structure under study, which are able to take into account both the geometric and material non-linearities that are present in the subject at hand (plasticity, cracking, large displacements). The difference among the formulated models lies on the use of different types of finite elements. The numerical results obtained by each model are compared and the most efficient model is determined. Finally, this model is in the sequel used for the further investigation of the effect of different parameters on the ultimate load capacity, such as the initial out-of-plane imperfection of the plate and the interaction between the axial loads in both directions.

  • The optimun laminated composition of the stiffened composite plates is studied from the view point of buckling strength. The finite element method is applied to the buckling analysis of the composite plates taking into account the effect of shear deformation through the plate thickness. The stiffened plate model is discretized using plate thickness and symmetrically stacked. Parametric study is carried out for the selection of the optimum laminate structure; optimum fiber angle sequence through the thickness. Laminate structure of $[-45^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]$, is found to give the best buckling strength. For the case of that layer number is more than eight, best result is obtained when layers of the same fiber angle are put together, leaving the laminate has the same fiber angle sequence as a whole.

  • When hot-rolled wide flanges are used as vertical compressive or bending member, opening web are often to take a space for equipments of pipe or duct. The Web of hot-rolled wide flange steel with opening may be analyzed as a rectangular plate, subjected to in plane force, and the buckling load is governed by the ultimate force of web. The result of the theory showed close agreement with the result of the finite element analysis. It was also shown that the buckling loads of stiffened opening plates could be larger than those of the plate. The stiffened opening plates for the 4-side simply supported case showed more stiffening effect than the Two Opposite Elastic Supports and Two Other Opposite Simply Supports case. In this study, we proposed the effective opening sizes that buckling loads of stiffened opening plate could be greater than those of the plates.

  • This study reports a series of drop impact tests performed to generate denting damages on stiffened plates and their residual ultimate strength tests under axial compression. The models were fabricated of general structural steel, and each model has six longitudinal stiffeners and two transverse frames. Among six fabricated models, four were damaged, and two were left intact for reference. To investigate the effects of collision velocity and impact location on the extent of damage, the drop height and the impact location were changed in each impact test. After performing the collision tests, the ultimate axial compression tests were conducted to investigate the residual strengths of the damaged stiffened plates. Finite element analyses were also carried out using a commercial package Abaqus/Explicit. The material properties obtained from a quasi-static tensile tests were used, and the strain-rate sensitivity was considered. After importing the collision simulation results, the ultimate strength calculations were carried out and their results were compared with the test data for the validation of the finite element analysis method.

  • The minimum weight design for the simply-supported eccentrically stiffened plates subjected to combined loads is studied according to the stiffening configuration. The optimal programming is accomplished by formulating the design requirements in terms of a mathematical programming problem, and by using the gradient projection algorithm. The Huber type equilibrium equation is used as the governing equation for the overall buckling. The overall buckling of stiffened plates and the local buckling of the unstiffened plate between stiffeners and the stiffeners themselves are used as behavior constraints. Results of design examples for the orthogonally stiffening case compared with those of the other study support that the present study is feasible. Design examples for the symmetrically oblique stiffening case are presented and the results indicate that a significant improvement in design efficiency may be achieved through symmetrically oblique stiffening compared to the orthogonal stiffening under the combined loading condition.

  • Effect of ring and straight stiffeners in the buckling as well as vibration characteristics of metal-ceramic functionally graded plates with cutout subjected to various uniaxial and localized in-plane compressive edge loadings was explored in the present work. In the current work, the distinguishing characteristics of metal and ceramic are merged in a single volume, and power law was used for estimating the material composition throughout thickness. Buckling and free vibration characteristics were studied initially for unstiffened Al/SiC functionally graded plates with cutout. Subsequently, the influence of cutout ratio on buckling load as well as natural frequency for different power law indices was discussed. The functionally graded plate was stiffened by three different stiffener patterns, namely; ring stiffener, straight stiffener, as well as a combination of the ring and the straight stiffener, to enhance the buckling as well as vibration characteristics. The effect of stiffener depth ratio for different stiffener patterns was also presented for functionally graded plates having different cutout sizes under various loading conditions. Such studies on functionally graded material have potential applications in a variety of technological fields including the aerospace and defense sectors.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the compression behaviors of SSC (stiffened steel plate-concrete) and NSC (non-stiffened steel plate-concrete) structures, and to identify the effects of the increment in the structural performance of SSC structures. SCC structures are structures that integrate steel plates with line support from ribs (H-shape) and point supports from studs with concretes. On the other hand, NSC structures are structures that integrate steel plates with point supports from studs with concrete. The following results were obtained in this study. First, compared with NSC structures, it was shown that SSC structures have advantages in terms of preventing steel plate buckling and delaying quick destruction through the brittleness of concrete. In addition, the SSC structures showed a 5-28% increment in maximum compressive strength, which far surpassed that shown by the NSC structures.

  • In this paper, a 3-dimensional stiffened plate model for soil-metal box structures is proposed. 3-dimensional stiffened plate model is enable to model corrugated steel plates of soil metal box culverts considering section modulus and section properties of longitudinal and horizontal direction from a corrugated steel plate. Loading conditions which causes maximum displacement and maximum moment according to the step construction stages(a back filling to the top of the plate, a back filling to the maximum depth of cover, and loading of live loads) was applied and the behaviors of the soil metal box culverts was analyzed. Analysis results of 3-dimensional stiffened model were compared with those of 2-dimensional model, 3-dimensional equivalent plate model and 3-dimensional corrugated plate model. As results, the behaviors of 2-dimensional model and 3 dimensional equivalent model are different from 3-dimensional corrugated plate model but the result of 3-dimensional stiffened model has good agreement with that of 3-dimensional corrugated plate model.

  • The objective of this paper is to identify the compression forces and inelastic failure mode using stiffened steel plate-concrete structures. The compression tests were carried out for the three types of B/t ratios by 25, 33 and 50. The test results proved that the compressive strength of the stiffened SC structures can be estimated by the summation of the strengths both stiffened steel plate and concrete. The buckling of the steel plates had been occurred at the plates between studs. The empirical estimation of compressive strength for the stiffened SC structures under compressive loadings was suggested. The buckling behavior also compared with the results of the finite element analysis. The good agreement has been achieved between the experimental results and finite element results.

  • In this study, the assumed mode method using characteristic polynomials of Timoshenko beam is applied to the free vibration analysis for the stiffened plate of ship tank side in contact with water. The hydro-elastic effect of the fluid-structure interaction is considered by fluid velocity potential, derived from boundary conditions for fluid and structure, and utilized in the calculation of added mass matrix using assumed modes. To verify the validity and effectiveness of the presented method, free vibration analysis for the stiffened plates in contact with finite and infinite fluids have been carried out and its results were compared with those obtained by a general purpose FEA software.
