Nuclear fuels are always exposed to hot temperature and high speed coolant flow during the reactor operation. Thus the fuel rod accompanies small amplitude vibration due to the turbulent flow. The random vibration causes friction between the fuel rod and the grid structure which provides the lateral supports. The friction is critical to the fuel rod fretting wear, and it degrades fuel performance when a severe wear is developed. LuGre friction model is introduced in the paper, and the performance was evaluated comparing to the classical Coulomb model. It is shown that the developed friction force considering the Coulomb friction is not enough to stop or delay the motion while the stick-slip can be simulated using LuGre friction model. Numerical solutions of the two dimensional spacer grid cell model with the modern friction are also reviewed, and it is discussed that the new friction model simulates well the nonlinear mechanism.
A two-degree of freedom model is suggested to understand the basic dynamical behaviors of the interaction between two masses of the friction induced vibration system. The two masses may be considered as the pad and the disk of the brake, The phase space analysis is performed to understand complicated dynamics of the non-linear model. Attractors in the phase space are examined for various conditions of the parameters of the model especially by emphasizing on the damping parameters. In certain conditions, the attractor becomes a limit cycle showing the stick-slip phenomena. In this paper, not only the existence of the limit cycle but also the size of the limit cycle is examined to demonstrate the non-linear dynamics that leads the unstable state. For the two different cases of the system frequency ((1)two masses with same natural frequencies, (2) with different natural frequencies), the propensity of limit cycle is discussed in detail. The results show an important fact that it may make the system worse when too much damping is present in the only one part of the masses.

In the present study, the following factors are analyzed systematically using the theoretical and experimental methods, which have the significant influence on the quality of VTR tape path system in order to develope the high performance and quality in VTR mechanism: 1) Vibration characteristics of the deck including the tape path sytem, 2) Modeling the global tape path, 3) Torsional vibration of the VTR drum. 4) Capstan system, 5) Tension bar, 6) Stick-slip phenomenon of the running tape.
Friction causes self-excited vibration, stick-slip vibration and any other friction-induced phenomena. That kinds of vibrations cause chatter and squeal. In order to predict such vibrations accurately, employing an accurate friction model is very important because a dynamic behavior of a system with friction is dominantly governed by a friction model. A Coulomb friction model is the most widely known model. Coulomb friction model is useful model to obtain analytical solutions of the system with friction and the model gives relatively good simulation result. However, defining a friction force at a stick state in simulation is hard because of the characteristic itself and a Coulomb friction model is discontinuous function between a static and a dynamic friction coefficient. Therefore, applying the Coulomb friction model to a simulation is not appropriate. In order to resolve these problems, an approximated Coulomb friction model was developed using simple and continuous function. However, an approximated Coulomb friction model cannot realize stick. Therefore, an approximated Coulomb friction model cannot describe friction phenomena accurately. In order to analyze a friction phenomenon accurately, a friction model for a simulation was proposed in this paper. A proposed friction model realizes stick and gives reasonably good results compared to results obtained by the simulation employing an approximated Coulomb friction model. Accuracy of a proposed friction model was verified by comparing experimental results.
The media transport systems, such as printers, copiers, facsimile, ATMs, cameras, etc., have been widely used and being developed rapidly. In the development of those systems, the media feeding mechanism is an important key technology for the design and development of the media transport systems. In this paper, a multi-degree of freedom sheet model with dynamic contact conditions is presented to understand the mechanism of sticking and jamming. A sheet is modelled as a cantilever beam and the feeding velocity is assumed to be constant. The relation between the feeding velocity and the coefficient of friction for guaranteeing stable feeding is presented. Simulations are performed for a horizontal linear guide and a oblique linear guide, calculating the contact force and contact states of mass points.
In many machines handling lightweight and flexible media such as magnetic tape drives, xerographic copiers and sewing machines, the media must transit an open space. It is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability. The nonlinear theory of the dynamic elastica has often been used to a nonlinear dynamic deflection model. In this paper, the governing equation is derived and simulated by the finite differential method. The parametric cubic curve is applied for defining the guide shape. The dynamic contact conditions suggested by Klarbring is used to predict the direction of the flexible media according to the initial velocity and the friction coefficient. The analysis is also compared to the conventional model, showing that after contacting a $45^{\circ}$ wall, the directions of flexible media of two models are different.
The contraction and expansion noise of a refrigerator are investigated, and some effective methods are proposed to reduce the level and occurrence frequency of noise. First, the noise of a refrigerator is measured to estimate the frequency spectrum and occurrence frequency of noise. Second, a sound visualization was conducted using an acoustic camera to determine the location of the noise source. From the results, it was observed that the internal part mainly producing noise was the third shelf in the freezer room. A method to estimate the acceleration on the location of the noise source is introduced to analyze the contraction and expansion noise precisely and accommodate experimental convenience. Noise reduction methods such as the replacement of the existing shelf with glass shelves, adoption of rail slides, and increase of roughness on the contact surface of the shelf are proposed and tested.
