A chemosystematic investigation of selected Stichococcus-like organisms (Trebouxiophyta)

  • The taxonomy of green microalgae relies traditionally on morphological traits but has been rapidly changing since the advent of molecular methods. Stichococcus Nägeli is a cosmopolitan terrestrial algal genus of the class Trebouxiophyceae that has recently been split into seven lineages, which, along with Pseudostichococcus, comprise the Stichococcuslike group; there is a need to further characterize these genera, since they are morphologically enigmatic. Here we used organic osmolytes as chemotaxonomic marker to verify the phylogenetic position of Stichococcus-like strains and were also able to exclude a strain hitherto identified as Gloeotila contorta from this group. Stichococcus-like organisms, including those recently revised, were characterized by the production of the polyol sorbitol and the disaccharide sucrose in high amounts, as is typical of Prasiola-clade algae. The results demonstrate that organic osmolyte chemotaxonomy can support green algal taxonomic designations as fundamental research.

Eight Taxa of Newly Recorded Species of Chlorophytes (Chlorophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) in Korea

  • In 2017, the freshwater algae were collected from reservoirs, small ponds, soil, and rocks in Korea. Eight taxa of Chlorophyta (Chlorophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae) have been newly reported in Korea. The unrecorded indigenous species were Chlorolobion braunii, Coelastrum pseudomicroporum, Coelastrum reticulatum var. cubanum, Monoraphidium nanum, Tetrachlorella incerta, Ecdysichlamys obliqua, Gloeotila scopulina, and Stichococcus jenerensis.

A study of eight newly reported species of Chlorophyte and Eustigmatophyte, Korea

  • In this study, aquatic and aerial algae were collected in various environments in Hongcheon-river of Gangwan-do between December 2011 and June 2012, with the aim of adding newly described genera and species to the Korean flora. As a result, five genera and eight species were recorded for the first time in Korea. These newly recorded genera and species were Cylindrocapsa geminella, Leptosira mediciana, Pseudendoclonium basiliense var. brandii, Stichococcus minor, S. deasonii, Eustigmatos polyphem, Nephrodiella lunaris, and Xanthonema exile. The eight taxa identified in this study mostly corresponded to their reported morphological characteristics. However, some differences from previous published descriptions were found; N. lunaria, reported to be an aquatic species in a previous study, was found to be an aerial algae inhabiting on rocks and mosses. Cylindrocapsa geminella was found to transform into attached or planktonic algae depending on the environmental condition, and the cell wall was found to be changed. Likewise, E. polyphem was seen to change cell-shape or chloroplast color according to the environment.

Newly recorded chlorophytes, Monoraphidium subclavatum, Deuterostichococcus epilithicus, and Pseudostichococcus monallantoides in Korea

  • Monoraphidium subclavatum (FBCC-A409) of this study clustered in the same clade as Messastrum gracile strains in the 18S rDNA phylogeny. Compared to Messastrum gracile, Monoraphidium subclavatum did not form a colony, and the curvature of the cell was slightly curved or slightly crescent-shaped. This result means that the genus Monoraphidium is still based on the morphospecies concept, and was not monophyletic and not distinguishable as a separate genus. Two Stichococcus-like strains of this study (NIBRCL0000114567, NIBRCL0000114571) belong to Deuterostichococcus epilithicus and Pseudostichococcus monallantoides respectively in phylogenetic analysis using 18S rDNA sequences. These two species are consistent with recent research in the morphology and the genetic analyses using 18S and ITS rDNA sequences. We reported M. subclavatum, D. epilithicus, and P. monallantoides as newly recorded species in Korea.

Six Taxa of Newly Recorded Species of Charophytes (Charophyta) in Korea

  • Six taxa of unrecorded Korean species of charophytes are described. Freshwater and aerial charophytes were collected from the bark of trees, reservoirs, small ponds and swamps from April 2017 to September 2017. The newly recorded species of Korea were Cosmarium quadrifarium f. octastichum, Euastrum turneri, Spondylosium nitens var. triangulare, Staurastrum kouwetsii, Staurodesmus dickiei var. latus, and Klebsormidium subtile. K. subtile was transferred from Stichococcus subtilis.

논발생(發生) 담수조류(淡水藻類)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) III. 녹조류(綠藻類)의 동정(同定) 및 번식생태(繁殖生態) (Fresh-water Algae Occurred in Paddy Rice Fields III. Identification and Propagation of Green Algae)

  • 논에 발생(發生)하는 조류(藻類)의 생태(生態) 및 방제(防除)를 위한 기초자료(基礎資料)를 얻기 위하여 1991년 전국(全國) 논에서 채집(採集)한 녹조류(綠藻類)에 대(對)하여 분류(分類) 동정(同定)하고 주요(主要) 조류(藻類)의 번식생태(繁殖生態)를 구명(究明)하여 다음과 같은 결과(結果)를 얻었다. 1. 전국(全國) 논에서 채집(採集)한 녹조류(綠藻類)에는 총(總) 16과(科) 29속(屬) 46종(種)이 동정(同定)되었다. 2. 서산(瑞山) 간척지(干拓地) 담수직파(湛水直播) 논에 대량(大量) 발생(發生)하는 조류(藻類)는 사상(絲狀) 녹조류(綠藻類)(Cladophora)이었으며 분지형(分枝形) 사상체(絲狀體)이고 대량(大量) 발생(發生)한 논에서는 구형집단(求刑集團)으로서 수면(水面)에 부유(浮遊)하고 있었다. 3. 벼 이앙후(移秧後) 수면(水面)에 나타나는 연색(緣色) 수화현상(水花現象)은 주로 부유성(浮遊性) 단세포(單細胞) 녹조류(綠藻類) Chlamydomonas, 부유성(浮遊性) 사상(絲狀) 녹조류(綠藻類) Stichococcus 등(等)에 기인(起因)하였다. 4. 그물말(Hydrodictyon)은 모체(母體)의 각(各) 세포(細胞)로부터 어린 망상체(網狀體) 1개(個)씩이 형성(形成)됨으로써 단기간(短期間)에 많은 개체(個體)로 증가(增加)하는 무성번식(無性繁殖) 주(主)로 하고 있었다. 5. 붓뚜껑말(Oedogonium)의 유성번식(有性繁殖)과 무성번식(無性繁殖) 과정(過程) 및 해캄(Spirogyra)의 유성번식(有性繁殖) 과정(過程)이 관찰(觀察)되었다.

Diversity of Micro-algae and Cyanobacteria on Building Facades and Monuments in India

  • Fifty seven taxa of Cyanobacteria and 15 taxa of Chlorophyta were recorded from the exterior of buildings and rock surfaces of monuments in different regions in India. Four cyanobacteria, e.g. Chroococcidiopsis kashayi, Pseudophormidium indicum, Plectonema puteale and Scytonema geitleri, and the green alga Trentepholia abietina var. tenue occur on the sub-aerial habitats throughout the year. In addition, five other green algae: Chlorococcum infusionum, Scenedesmus arcuatus, Trentepholia aurea, Gloeocystis polydermatica and Printzina effusa, and 18 other cyanobacteria taxa of the genera Chroococcus (5), Asterocapsa (1), Cyanosarcina (2), Gloeocapsa (7), Gloeothece (2) and Scytonema (1) occur on the sub-aerial surfaces enduring extreme temperature and desiccation during summer months of the tropics. During the rainy season, the warm and humid climatic regime coupled with availability of moisture supported an additional ten green algae and 29 cyanobacteria in eight and 17 genera, respectively. The green algal genera Klebsormidium, Stichococcus and Trebouxia, which are dominant in temperate regions, did not occur on the sub-aerial habitats in India, however, species of Gloeocapsa, Chroococcus, Chroococcidiopsis, Phormidium, Leptolyngbya, Nostoc, Scytonema, Chlorella and Trentepholia showed global occurrence in similar habitats.
