  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the phenomenological approaches in Holl's architecture centered on his Nelson-Atkins Art Museum. This study mainly deals with concrete and practical architectural contents based on his recent works rather than existing studies about philosophical point of views to his architecture. Because Holl has had turning point from theoretical research to practical application and development stage. Therefore, this study aims to find out Holl's phenomenological approaches that were different from his early works. Nelson-Atkins art museum shows effect of luminosity as well as inflow of light in the phenomenological experiences of light and space. Holl gave new addition building that he designed contrasts of massing, transparency of material, colors to enhance existence of new building through phenomenological experiences. Narrow and long circulation and various focal points provide multi-view points and overlapped spaces in body experiences As a result, Holl shows shifts from theoretical application to architectural utilization. Nelson-Atkins art museum is important in that this project is one of stating points about this shift.

  • The tendency of formalization in Contemporary Architecture deeply relies on the thought of Western Philosophy, which emphasizes the art of image perceived visually but ignores the body and perception of a human beig who uses the architecture and lives in it. On the contrary, Merleau-Ponty asserted long time ago that the world and the body are inseparably related to each other. The phenomenology is important in Architecture, since the center of thought should be taken back to the human body if a artistic meaning can be obtained by Architecture. From this point of view, the meaning of Contemporary Architecture can be renewed by the phenomenological idea of Merleau-Ponty as a means of expanding thought that overcomes the limit of formalization in Contemporary Architecture. This research aims to ream from Steven Holl's work, and show the Architectural elements that are used for preceptual experience of phenomenon and the function of those element sin Architectural space of his works. The result of study on about the phenomenal light and water in Architectural space of Steven Holl is as follows; First, in perceptional experience of phenomenon, time is an important element, which is successive and make a field that cause perceptional experience. Second, light, as a phenomenological element, acted as a means of expressing the comparison and change of light and shadow in Architectural space and showing the change of color by the diversity of time in inner space. Third, water, as a phenomenal lens, not only acted functional but also functioned as an element of sensual experience in Architectural space. It acted as an image containing time, space, just like a mirror that reflect the environment.

  • This study aimed to show the possibility of approaching Steven Holl's Stretto House as a vital space identical to the flow of our consciousness through Bergson's philosophy of life by understanding the expression of Bergsonian duration in the house. For the Purpose of this study, Bergson's concept of aesthetic duration was considered and duration in the Stretto House design process was analyzed, Based on the study's findings, duration according to Bergson's expression of reality in the Stretto House was further analyzed. The results of the analysis of duration in the Stretto House design process showed that duration is expressed as phenomenological time through the continuity and movement of the perceptual phenomena of space, sound, light and material that reflected Merleau-Ponty's anchoring and Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. The results of the analysis of duration as an expression of reality in the Stretto House showed that duration is expressed as real time, as reality's continuous and diverse movement of vital duration, through the image and rhythm based on the intuitive recollection of the real self, sound, light and pond. Consequently, it was shown that the Stretto House could be understood as a vital space in which a vital movement of duration identical with the flow of our consciousness is expressed through the expression of reality in Bergson's philosophy of life. This study is meaningful as a foundational study of the experiential space of phenomena through Bergson's philosophy of life.

  • The philosophers think that the increase of loneliness in technological society is caused by the reduced feeling to some extent. They started to think the integral feeling in terms of existentialism away from Visualcentrism. It is apparent that in architectural design a concrete feeling(sense) out of Visualcentrism of modern architecture is reflected in a architecture. In particular, the architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl, Peter Zumthor, Kuma Kengo think that the existential value of the objects is important and would like to reflect the existence of materials on architecture. This study is to analyze the common points and different points regarding how in these works sensible experiences are approached. The results show that these works have common features containing escape from visual formativeness in the space, pursuit of locational connection, study on pure essence of the materials, and reflectance of the feeling of depth and motility. In addition, the actual beings of the materials for this feeling were mainly used and showed some difference in terms of the usage of local materials, natural environment, five senses of body. This study is important in the point of view that there are few researches that compared with the characteristics of architects' works while there were many researched that treated architecture as sensible view.

  • An event as philosophical thought is expanded throughout our society and affected largely an architectural field as well as aesthetics. Paying attention to this fact, this study is to relate the event to an architectural space and to find an interrelationship between them. Since Martin Heidegger who started to be regarded the event as a subject of thought, many philosophers revealed different thoughts about it. Architecture works of Louis I. Kahn, Peter Zumthor, Steven Holl, Bernard Tschumi, Rem Koolhaas who had the influences from the thoughts of Martin Heidegger, M. Merleau-Ponty, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, are analyzed and compared their features. The reason why this relationship has become the subject of research is because the event can be confirmed to be connected with an architectural thoughts by correlating with aesthetic texts. Throughout this study, each architect, who is affected from philosophers, has different characters as they have different thoughts about events. This study is expected to be used as an literature data of intertextuality of philosophy and architecture.

  • Contemporary architecture is showing its deconstruction and departure from modern architecture based on rationality, such as reductionism or virtualism. This means a shift from a mechanistic and ecological world view to an organic and ecological view, from a deterministic reason to a reason for a possible secret static. This study examines the potential of fractals, a scientific theory of complexity that is emerging as a new paradigm in the 21st century, as an appropriate alternative to contemporary complexity architecture. The method and scope of this study were understood and its features were identified through literature and data research and prior study review. Based on the organic nature of fractal geometry, we analyzed the works of contemporary architects(Frank Gehry, Bernard Tschumi, Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Zvi Hecker, Ito Toyo) and studied the possibility of architectural design using the principle of fractal. As a result, fractal geometry, similar to the patterned order of nature, has an infinite set of organizational functionalities in architecture and can be applied in various aspects of design analysis. Architectural designs based on the fractal theory will require more research and development to realize dynamic design representation using digital computers.

  • Non-geometric shapes in contemporary architecture was explained from the transcendental schema of Deleuze with his abstraction theory. In this explanation, the intensity, the movement and change and the sublime were suggested as the expressional elements of the transcendental abstraction related with the artistic sensation of architecture. First, the intensity as a power of sensation which acts to the body before the recognition of brain is mainly expressed with the movement of curved lines of architectural space. Second, the movement of change is expressed as the de-centralized and de-formalized nomadic curve as the line in architectural 'smooth space' which has unrestrained orientations. Third, the sublime is expressed in the hugeness, enormousness or sometimes uncanny in void space, which could be contradictively mixed with senses of displeasure and pleasure. The sublime feelings in architecture can be emerging by rationally overcoming the unpleasant senses of contradictive spaces in architecture or urban fabric. This study has explained those expressional elements with the architectural works of Steven Holl, Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid.
