The present study concerns the stern slamming load of container carriers, with stern bulb arrangement variation. First, a series of wedge drop tests were conducted using simple wedge models with fixed deadrise angles, and tests with the cross-section models of practical container carrier sterns were followed. The deadrise angle of the simple wedge ranged from 0° to 10°. The pressure measurement results of the simple wedge drop tests were distributed between empirical formula and analytic solution, so the experimental setup was validated. In the cases of practical hull cross-sections, the water entry of the bulb prior to that of the transom resulted in characteristic water film generation and delayed pressure peak appearance. The trapped air between the bulbs damped the pressure in the twin skeg hull case, reducing the pressure peak and causing the pressure oscillation during water entry.
An experimental study carried out to predict the performance characteristics of a high speed planing boat at the two displacements whose hull form shows hard chines form transom to bow. In the resistance test the planing hull model was porpoising at and above 30 knots for both displacements of 30 tons and 24 tons. A small stern wedge was newly designed and attached across hull bottom. The planing hull model with the stern sedge did not show any porpoising up to the speed of 45 knots for both displacements and it analysed results shows the improvement of resistance performance and planing performance comparing with those of original hull form; i.e. for displacement of 30 tons the effective power and trim angle were reduced by 18.9% and 5.71 degrees at the speed of 28 knots, and for the displacement of 24 tons the effective power and trim angle were reduced by 23.63% and 4.37 degrees at the speed of 28 knots, respectively.
A numerical method is developed for computing the free surface flows around a transom stern of a ship at a high Froude number. At high speed, the flow may be detached from the flat transom stern. In the limit of the high Froude number, the problem becomes a planning problem. In the present study, we make the finite-element computations for a transom stern flows around a wedge-shaped floating ship. The numerical method is based on the Hamilton's principle. The problem is formulated as an initial value problem with nonlinear free surface conditions. In the numerical procedures, the domain was discretized into a set of finite elements and the numerical quadrature was used for the functional equation. The time integrations of the nonlinear free surface condition are made iteratively at each time step. A set of large algebraic equations is solved by GMRES(Generalized Minimal RESidual, Saad and Schultz 1986) method which is proven very efficient. The computed results are compared with previous numerical results obtained by others.

The resistance of a high speed monohull can be dramatically increased at the high speed range due to the severe stern trim, spray formation and hull bottom pressure irregularity etc. In order to avoid these demerits associated with this resistance increase, various appendages such as the stern wedge, vertical wedge, stern flap, spray strip etc. have been studied. Each of appendage can control the trim angle and/or improve the resistance performance. If these appendages are combined for finding the maximal resistance reduction, there are enormous combination selections. This paper presents the DOE(Design of experiment) using an orthogonal array in order to decrease the model tests finding the optimum appendage combination. And we evaluate that the method introduced in this paper makes the optimal combination of appendages efficient and time-saving by applying to high speed semi-planing monohull. Here, the maximum speed and the least fuel expense are adopted as the decision criteria.
This study presents the design procedure for optimizing the semi-planing hull form, including appendages, using numerical and experimental methods. Four different referenced semi-planing hull forms were compared to determine their hydrodynamic performances, and one of the hull forms was modified for optimum operation at high-speed conditions (0.4 < $F_{NL}$ < 0.9). The optimized, semi-planing hull form was tested in the towing tank to investigate its resistance characteristics. Also, the results of the model tests with differing design parameters were used to choose the stern wedge and the spray strip to improve the hydrodynamic performance at high speeds.

The hydrodynamic effect of appendages for high-speed passenger vessels, such as Ro-Pax, Ro-Ro and cruiser vessels, is very severe and, therefore, it is essential to carry out the design of appendages for high-speed passenger vessels from the preliminary design stage to the final detail design stage through a full survey of the reference vessels together with sufficient technical investigation. Otherwise, many problems would be caused by mismatches between the appendages and the hull form. This paper investigates the design characteristics of some appendages, such as the side thruster, the shaft-strut, and the stern wedge, based on the design experience accumulated at Samsung, on CFD, and on model test results for high-speed passenger vessels. Further to this investigation, some practical and valuable design guidelines for such appendages are suggested.

Hull forms of a high speed small boat have been developed through numerical studies. A round bilge type hull form has been drived form a using chine hull form with HCAD, a hull form variation software. Wave resistance and the flow fields around the ships have been computed using well-known software, WAVIS. This software employs Rankine source method with non-linear tree surface condition as well as dry transom boundary conditions. The round bilge hull form showed better resistance performance than to the chine hull form for the whole speed range. However, considering the building and labor costs of the small shipyard, the chine hull form has been selected and its wave resistance characteristics has been improved by modifying the bow regions and applying the stem wedge. It is found that the effect of stem wedge is quite satisfactory to improve the resistance characteristics of high speed chine hull form.

It has been often reported that a water-jet propelled high speed vessel lost the course keeping ability in seaway. In this study, model tests of a high speed vessel were performed to measure the running attitude and to check the course keeping ability. The model ship may lose the course keeping ability due to bad running attitudes such as bow drop. So model tests were carried out to improve the running attitude by changing the position of longitudinal center of gravity and using appendages at the bow and the stern of a model. The position of lateral center of pressure moved toward stern and the course keeping ability was improved by modifying the transom wedge angle.

Ice rubble pieces broken by the bow impact load and side hull of an icebreaking vessel usually pass along the ship's bottom hull and may hit the propeller/rudder or other stern structures causing serious damage to ship's hull . Therefore it is important to estimate the size of broken ice pieces during the icebreaking process. The dynamic interaction process of icebreaker with infinite ice sheet is simplified as a wedge type beam of finite length supported by elastic foundation. The wedge type ice beam is leaded with vertical impact forces due to the inclined bow stem of icebreaking vessels. The numerical model provides locations of maximum dynamic bending moment where extreme tensile stress arises and also possible fracture occurs. The model can predict a failure length of broken ice sheet given design parameters. The results are compared to Nevel(1961)'s analytical solution for static load and observed pattern of ice sheet failure onboard an icebreaker. Also by comparing computed failure length with the characteristic length, the meaning of ice rubble sizes is discussed.
The displacement Deep-V catamaran concept was developed in Newcastle University(UNEW) through development of the systematic Deep-V catamaran series. One of the most important Deep-V catamaran launched to date is Newcastle University's own multi-purpose research vessel, The Princess Royal. The vessel was launched in 2011 and enhanced the Deep-V catamaran concept further with the successful adoption of a novel anti-slamming bulbous bow and tunnel stern for improved efficiency. It was however identified that the vessel has substantial amount of dynamic trim that limited the visibility of the captain. The dynamic trim also increased the wave-making resistance thereby preventing the vessel from attaining its maximum speed in certain sea states. This paper therefore presents the application of devices such as Trim Tabs, Interceptors, Transom Wedges and Integrated Transom Wedges-Tabs to control the dynamic trim and improvement of fuel efficiency of the vessel. All of these energy saving devices were fitted into a model for tests in Newcastle University's Towing Tank. Model test verification confirmed that the optimum appendage was the interceptors, they produced a 5% power saving and 1.2 degree trim reduction at 15 knots, and investigations of full scale trials will be scheduled with and without application of device to compare the improvement of performance.
