Influences of vrious environmental factors on the eutrophication of Nakdong River were analyzed statistically using water samples collected from 1 January, 1999, to 30 September, 2001 at Namji area. The relationships between the concentration of chlorophyll α (eutrophication index) and environmental factors and were analyzed to develop a statistical model which can predict the status of eutrophication. The concentation of chlorophyll α ranged from 66.2 mg · $m^{-3}$ to 70.8 mg · $m^{-3}$ during dry winter season and the average concentration during this study period was 35.5 mg · $m^{-3}$ Namji area of Nakdong River was in the hypereutrohic stage in terms of water quality. Stephanodiscus sp. and Aulacoseria granulata var. angustissima were dominant species during the witnter to spring time and summer to autumn period, respectively. Based on the correlation analysis and the analysis of variance between chlorophyll α concentration and environmental factors, significantly high positive relationships were found in the order of BOD> pH> COD > KMnO₄ consumption > DO > conductivity > alkalinity. In contrast to these factors, significantly negrative relationships were found as in the order of $PO₄^{3-}-P$ >water level>the rate of Namgang-dam discharge > NH₃-N> the rate of Andong-dam discharge> the rate of Hapchoen-dam discharge. Based on the factors analysis of environmental factors on the concentration of chlorophyll α, we obtained five factors as follows. The first factor included water level, pH, turbiditiy, conductivity, alkalinity and the rate of Namgang-dam discharge. The second factor included water temperature DO, NH₄+-N, NO₃- -N. The third factor included KMnO₄ consumption COD and BOD. The fourth factor included the rate of Andong-dam discharge, the rate of Hapcheon-dam discharge, and the rate of Imha-dam discharge. The final factor included T-N T-P and $PO₄^{3-}-P$ > concentration. We derived two statistica models that can predict the occurrence of eutrophication based on the factors by factor analysis, using regression analysis. The first model is the stepwise regression model whose independent variables are the factors produced by factor analysis : chl α (mg · $m^{-3}$ = 42.923+(18.637 factor 3) + (-17.147 factor 1) + (-12.095 factor 5) + (-4.828 factor 4). The second model is the alternative stepwise regression model whose independent variables are the sums of the standardized main component variables:chl α (mg · $m^{-3}$ = 37.295+(7.326 Zfactor 3) + (-2.704 Zfactor 1)+(-2.341 Zfactor 5).
To isolate alga-lytic bacteria, a number of samples were collected from Lake of Sukchon and Pal'tang reservoir where cyanobacteria blooming occurred. HY0210-AK1, which exhibited high alga-lytic activity, was isolated using Anabaena cylindrica lawn. The morphological and biochemical characteristics of the isolate HY0210-AK1 were very similar to that of the genus Rhizobium. Taxonomic identification including 16S rDNA base sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate Hy0210-AK1 had a 99.1% homology in its 16S rDNA babe sequence with Sphingobium herbicidovorans. A. cylindrica NIES-19 was susceptible to the alga-lytic bacterial attack. The growth-inhibiting offset of the bacterium was not different on A. cylindrica NIES-19 when Sphingobium herbicidovorans HY0210-AK1 was in the lag, exponential, and stationary growth phase, although the alga-Iytic effect of S. herbici-dovorans HY0210-AK1 that in stationary growth phase was somewhat pronounced at the first time of inoculation. When S. herbicidovorans HY0210-AK1 was inoculated was inoculated with $1\times 10^{8}$ CFU $ml^{-1}$ together with A cylindrica NIES-19, the bacterium proliferated and caused algal lysis. A. cylindrica NIES-19 died when S. herbicidovorans HY0210 AKl was added to the algal culture but not when duly the filtrates from the bacterial culture was added. This suggests that extracellular substances are not responsible for inhibition of A. cylindrica NIES-19 and that algal Iysis largely attributed to direct interaction between S. herbicidovorans HY0210-AK1 and A. cylindrica NIES-19. The alga-lytic bacterium HY0210-AK1 caused cell lysis and death of three strain of Micro-cystis aeruginosa, but revealed no alga-Iytic effects on the Stephanodiscus hantzschii.
With land-use (cover) and water quality, the distributional characteristics of epilithic diatom communities were studied with 193 samples from estuaries of Korean peninsula between 2015 and 2016. Of total 394 taxa classified, Nitzschia perminuta (19.6%) and N. inconspicua (14.0%) were the 1st and 2nd dominant species. Using a cluster analysis, the epilithic diatom communities of Korean estuaries were divided into four groups (G1-G4). Ecological characteristics of each group were followed: G1 was located in estuaries of the East Sea, and characterized by high forest land-use and high DO and low nutrients; G2 was the eastern part of the South Sea, and characterized by low turbidity and nutrients; G3 was the western part of the South Sea, and characterized by high agriculture, low electric conductivity and low salinity; G4 was the Yellow Sea, and characterized by high nutrients. The environmental factors having significant correlation with diatom distributions were as follows: TN to G1, turbidity to G2, agriculture to G3, and TP to G4. Moreover, the important factors affecting the occurrence of indicator species were forest land-use for Fragilaria construens var. venter in G1, turbidity for Rhoicosphenia abbreviata in G2, urban land- use and total phosphorus (TP) for Bacillaria paradoxa and Hantzschia amphioxys of G3, and TP and turbidity for N. ovalis and Stephanodiscus invistatus of G4. These results collectively indicate that the distribution of epilithic diatom communities in Korean peninsula was largely effected by water quality and land cover/use.

This study was carried out to investigate algal community structures and their correlations with environmental factors on five weir areas in the Nakdong River, South Korea. Water qualities, hydrodynamics, meteorological conditions and algal species compositions were observed in studied sites from May 2010 to Dec. 2013. Results showed that average total phosphorus concentration of 2013 was decreased by 52.4% in comparing with that from 2010 to 2011. Chlorophyll.a concentrations were positive significant with water temperature, pH, total phosphorus and total nitrogen, but is not significant with turbidity and suspended solids. Seasonal successions of algae were observed that Stephanodiscus sp. was dominant species with 65.3% of dominant frequency in studied site. Large algal biomass of the low temperature-adapted diatoms were observed during temperature range of $4{\sim}9^{\circ}C$, but large cyanobacterial biomass mainly during high temperature period ranged from $22^{\circ}C$ to $32^{\circ}C$. Microcystis sp. dominated during high water temperature in summer. The yearly correlations of algal biomass with accumulated solar radiations were not significant but seasonal correlations of summer from June to August were significant with correlation coefficient 0.33 (p<0.05). There were not significant correlations between turbidities and algal biomass. Turbidity and suspended solids concentrations were not significant correlation with algal biomass. According to the results, algal communities had strong correlation with water temperature and had partially correlation with solar radiation. For an effective management of algal blooms, water managers should survey with more long-term monitoring of various environmental factors and algal communities.
Seasonal changes of the phytoplankton community was investigated from July 2000 to April 2001 at five stations in the Imjin River. A total of phytoplankton were composed of 193 taxa, belonging to 5 divisions, 145 species, 28 varieties, 1 form, 19 unidenfitied species. Of those, the diatoms and green algae were present during the investigation periods more frequently than the other taxa. The phytoplankton standing crops varied from $89{\times}10^3\;cells/l$ at station 1 in October 2000 to $8,825{\times}10^3\;cells/l$ at station 3 in April 2001. Throughout the investigation periods, at station 1, there was low in the size of phytoplankton standing crops at large. Otherwise, at station 2, staion 3 and station 4, we could see the maximum of phytoplankton standing crops in July 2000 and then phytoplankton standing crops decreased and it reached to the minimum in January 2001, and after then, it increased again. But exceptionally, we could see the maximum of phytoplankton standing crops in April at station 3. And also, at staion 5, we could see the similar variation pattern of phytoplankton standing crops at station 2, station 3 and station 4 with a little differences in seasonal variation pattern of phytofllankton standing crops. The major dominant species were Achnanthes minutissima, Anabaena sp., Aulacoseira ambigua, A. granulata, A. granulata v. angustissima, Cymbella affinis, Cylindrotheca closterium, Diatoma vulgare, Merismopedia glauca, Stephanodiscus hantzschiif. tenuis.

The construction of the eight large weirs in the Nakdong River, the second largest river in Korea, caused big changes in the physical environment of the water system. Algal communities and their correlations with environmental factors, mainly nutrients were studied at five weir areas in the Nakdong River from 2010 to 2013. Water quality, hydrodynamics and algal composition were investigated. Results showed that flow velocities were reduced compared with that before weir construction near the areas where are located in the mid and upstreams of the Nakdong River. A seasonal algal community succession was observed and it was mainly correlated with temperature and phosphorus. Diatoms were dominated from winter to spring months and massive diatomic blooms of Stephanodiscus sp. occurred early in March during survey period. Cyanobacterial blooms of Microcystis sp. occurred from July to September 2013 and was preceded by the lower total phosphorus concentration of $0.05mg\;L^{-1}$. The correlations between total phosphorus concentrations and algal abundances were not significant during the survey periods. However, significant correlation with cyanobacteria was found in the period of weir construction after only at the GG survey site and blooms periods of 7 times in the survey sites, and its correlation coefficients were 0.53 (p<0.001) and 0.42 (p<0.01) respectively. When algal bloom was observed, partially low nutrient concentration was observed in the Nakdong River. In conclusion, partially low nutrient concentration which may result from algal bloom was observed, and we presume it caused the reduction of algal abundunces.
Grazing effects of a freshwater bivalve, Unio douglasiae, on both the phytoplankton communities of cold- and warm eutrophic lakes were examined in aquarium with sediment. The animal U. douglasiae used in the study was collected from the Gunsan (Jeonbuk), acclimatized in laboratory aquaria with washed sand from the mussel collection stream, and starved for $2{\sim}3$ days by the experiment. Grazing experiments were performed with the surface waters collected from Lake Ilgam (Seoul) in the cold period (March 31, 2008), and the warm period (June 19, 2008), respectively. Results clearly showed that the concentration of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and algal abundance were decreased with the increase of mussel-treated density and treated-time. At the same animal density, U. douglasiae effectively decreased the chl-a of cold-lake water (CW), compared to warm-lake water (WW). Increasing the mussel density, the filtering rate (or algal abundance) of the mussel on the CW gradually decreased, while those of WW did not increase or decrease. Major phytoplankton species Synedra ulna and Stephanodiscus hantzschii, and Scenedesmus ecornis in CW, and those of Tetraedron regulare and Pediastrum simplex in WW, were quickly decreased after the mussel stocking. Interestingly, cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in WW, not dominant species, were less removed. These results suggest that a freshwater bivalve U. douglasiae have a strategic potential to control dense hibernal diatom or green algae, rather than the cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic water.
Filtration rates and fecal production of freshwater bivalve, Unio douglasiae on two kinds of hibernal diatom communities were measured simultaneously in a laboratory. One community is the Han River (HAN), which dominated by Asterionella Formosa. Stephanodiscus hantzschii (ca. 98% of total phytoplankton). The other community is the Ilgam Lake (IL), which dominated by Synedra ulna, Scenedesmus sp. Microcystis aeruginosa (ca. 82%). The HAN water has higher concentrations of nutrient (TN and TP) and chlorophyll $\alpha$ (Chl-$\alpha$), lower turbidity and conductivity than the IL water. Water sampling for the feeding experiment was conducted in the same day (Jan 15, 2008) and similar time (AM 10:00 for HAN, AM 11:00 for IL). Mussels with the similar size ($0.0{\pm}0.5\;cm$) were collected from the Gunsan and Okgu district (Jeonbuk), and starved in a laboratory for 2 days before the experiment. The experiment comprised CON (no addition of mussel), LOW (addition of mussel at 0.3 indiv. $L^{-1}$), MID (1.0 indiv. $L^{-1}$) and HIGH (2.0 indiv. $L^{-1}$), respectively. With the increment of mussel density and time, the concentration of Chl-$\alpha$ in two diatom communities were clearly decreased; Chl-$\alpha$ of HAN gradually decreased after 1 hour of mussel treatment, while that of IL decreased as soon as mussel introduction. In 7 hours of treatment, the former was removed finally up to about 90% of control, while the later was remained as about 50%. Under the presence of mussel, total phytoplankton density was shifted as the similar patterns to that of Chl-$\alpha$ (r=0.705, P<0.0001), however, there showed the drastic differences following a species. Based on the concentration of Chl-$\alpha$, filtration rate of U. douglasiae averaged 0.266 $L\;g^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ (0.115 to 0.442) on HAN and $0.577\;L\;g^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ (0.146 to 1.428) on IL water, respectively. There were no differences in feces production among the mussel density in the HAH water (ANOVA, P>0.5), while in IL water, including lots of seston, the HIGH mussel produced the higher fecal materials, over one hundred times of LOW. These results suggest that freshwater bivalve Unio douglasiae have the alternative potential, as a filter-feeder of seston in turbid lake, and a biological controller of diatom bloom in cold stream.
