  • Bipolaris stem rot of cactus severely occurred up to 77% at the field of Koyang and Kimcheon from 1996 to 1997. The symptom was initially light yellow, water soaked round lesion, subsequently turned light brown and dried to death. The causal fungus was identified as Bipolaris cactivora (Petrak) Alcorn. Conidia were obclavate to fusoid, rounded ends, light brown color, 1~4 septate, and conidial size was 23~42$\times$6~9 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ (av. 32.5$\times$7.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Conidiophores were caespitose, straight, pale to golden brown and 67~280 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in length. When healthy cacti were inoculated with the isolates obtained form the lesion of diseased plants, the same characteristic symptoms as those in the field were produced. The symptom of four-month-old cactus was developed more rapidly than that of six-month-old cactus. The pathogen was reisolated from the artificially inoculated lesions.

  • Purpose: To verify the anti-microbiotic activity and to develop eco-friendly surface disinfectants using the Opuntia ficus-indica extract. Methods: The stem and fruits of the Opuntia cultivated in Jeju Island were extracted with hot water, 70% EtOH and 100% MeOH, respectively. To examine the antimicrobial activity of the extracts, gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium), yeast (Candida albicans), mold (Aspergillus flavus) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (E. coli, S. aureus) were measured to form a clear zone. Results: The antibacterial activity of the fruit extract was higher than that of the stem extract, and the antibacterial activity of the 100% MeOH (FM) extract and the 70% EtOH (FE) extract of the palm cactus fruit was suitable for the surface disinfectant overall, and clear-zone formed even at relatively low concentrations (250 mg/mL). The FM and FE have antibacterial activity against various bacteria, therefore they can be used as disinfectants. Conclusion: The antimicrobial activity of Opuntia ficus-indica extract from Jeju Island by stem and fruit was determined at relatively low concentrations (250 mg/mL). The Opuntia ficus-indica extract will be useful for surface disinfectants dissolving the patients' bath, oral gargling, and powdered powder in water or ethanol in appropriate concentrations.

  • The four species of the suborder Holaxonia, Anthogorgia japonica Studer, 1889 of family Acanthogorgiidae, Astrogorgia rubra (Thomson & Henderson, 1906), Euplexaura attenuata (Nutting, 1910), and E. erecta (Kukenthal, 1908) of family Plexauridae have been newly recorded in Korea. They were collected from intertidal and sublittoral zones in the western and southern coasts and Jeju-do Island of Korea by SCUBA diving and fishing nets from 1969 to 2010. This study approaches holaxonians by focusing on external and internal morphologies including size, form, and color of colonies, branches, polyps, coenenchyme, axis, and spicules. Anthogorgia japonica is characterized by its planar growth form, dichotomously branched form, non-retractile polyps, and Astrogorgia rubra by arrangement of calyxes being situated in lateral side at stems and alternately in all sides at branches. Euplexaura attenuata is sparsely and laterally branched colony, and has straight wand-like stems. Euplexaura erecta has branches which run parallel to the main stem.

  • Systematic geometrical variation method of hull forms, such as "1 -Cp", "Swinging" and "Lackenby" are widely used in the early stage of a new design from those of a similar parent ship, which shows a better performance through the model test and/or sea trials. This method is simple and easy to modify original hull forms without changing the main characteristics. The shape of the prismatic curie can be easily varied by these methods, however, the frame line shape in the body plan can′t be generated easily, when the section shapes are complicated or have discontinuities or the mismatch of the body plan and the stem and stern profiles. To overcome this drawback of the hull form variations, a simple and useful method has been proposed in the present study.

  • The alpine grassland vegetation at the northwest slope of Mt. Paektu were investigated by Penound- Howard's cover-degree method. The floristic composition of the alpine grassland from 2,100m altitude to the top of mountain were 35 species, 1 subspecies, and 6 varieties, and most of the plants were short p e r e ~ i a l herbs and shrubs. The dominant species of the vegetation distributed along to altitude were Rhododendron aureum (2,100-2,20Om), Dryas octopetala var. asiatica(2,200-2,30Om), Dryas octopetala var. asiatica(2,300-2,40Om), Rhododendron aureum- Rhododendron redowskianum(2,400-2,50Om), and Rhododendron redowskianum(2,500- 2,58Om), respectively. Characteristics of the shrub plants which settled in alpine grassland showed uniform low height(3-15cm), creeping stem and evergreen leaf. Life form of the plants were 29 species of Hemicryptophyte, 8 species of Chamaephyte, 1 species of Geophyte, and 5 species of Phanerophyte. (Key words : Alpine grassland, Mt. • To verify allelopathic effect of tomato plants a number of labovatory experiments, seed germination and seedling growth with aqueous extracts and leachates form the tomato plants, have performed. Germination percentage of the tested species was decreased by treatment with leaf, stem and root extracts as extracting time elapses. The leaf extract more inhibits the germination of the seeds than both stem and root extracts. Leachate collected from the tomato plants decreases as much as 50% of the growths in elongation as well as dry weight of seedlings of lettuce and egg plant. It is observed that with a paired-plants grown in U tube pot the tomato roots have excreted allelochemicals to inhibit the growth of the tested species and volatile substances from the tomato plants have suppressed to dry weights of lettuce, to elongation and dry weights of grapevine planted near the tomato plants.

  • Identification of spermatogonial stern cell-specific surface molecules is important in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the maintenance and differentiation of these cells. We have found that spermatogonia from busulfan treated mice expressed an autoantigen that distinguishes between undifferentiated and differentiated spermatogonia. Four to six weeks after busulfan treatment, germ cells located in the basal compartment of seminiferous epithelium show isotype-specific IgG deposits that form due to autoimmunity. (omitted)

  • Transections of the stem region close to the shoot apex show the occurrence of an outer, complete ring of procambium and an inner group of discrete procambial strands. From the outer ring, small, discrete vascular bundles and vascular cambium originate, while the inner group forms the discrete, medullary vascular bundles with intrafascicular cambium. Secondary thickening is essentially due to the activity of the cylinder or complete ring of vascular cambium that originates from the procambium. The medullary intrafascicular cambia also form some secondary tissues. The vascular cambium produces secondary xylem inwards and secondary phloem outwards as in the normal secondary thickening process. The distinctive feature, however, is perpetual discreteness of the medullary vascular bundles. No successive series of cambia or secondary vascular bundles are found.
