  • Recent destructive seismic events demonstrated the importance of mitigating human casualties and serious property damages in design and construction of structures. The Korean Bridge Design Specifications (1992) adopted seismic design requirements based on the AASHTO specification, and minor modification was made in 2000. The longitudinal steel connection of reinforced concrete bridge column is sometimes practically unavoidable. The longitudinal reinforcement details affect seisimc performance such as flexural failure and shear failure. This research aims to develop longitudinal steel connection details with confinement steel by experimental study for seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns. Quasi-static test under three different axial load levels was conducted for 12 spiral column specimens. All the column specimens had the same aspect ratio of 3.5. The column specimens were transversely reinforced with spiral and with five different longitudinal steel connection. The final objective of this study is to suggest appropriate longitudinal reinforcement connection details for the limited ductility design concept and improve construction quality.

  • In the past decade, various experimental programmes were undertaken to address the lack of information on the interaction between steel coupling beams and reinforced concrete shear wall in a hybrid coupled shear wall system. In this paper, the seismic performance of steel coupling beam-wall connections in a hybrid coupled shear wall system is examined through results of an experimental research programme where three 2/3-scale specimens were tested under cyclic loading. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behaviour on the steel coupling beam-wall connection, i.e., the face bearing plates and the horizontal ties in the panel region of steel coupling beam-wall connections. Panel shear strength reflects enhancement achieved through mobilization of the reinforced concrete panel using face bearing plates and/or horizontal ties in the panel region of steel coupling beam-wall connections.

  • Finite element analysis using ANSYS program conducted to evaluate the tensile behavior of the connection between reinforced concrete and steel members is presented in this paper. It is assumed that there is a complete bond between head part of the stud and concrete. However, the surface of the column area of stud is separated from the concrete to stop the stress transmission between those. In case of using reinforcement connectors such as C or U type, the interface between concrete and reinforcement is idealized to have strong adhesion. Four concrete-steel specimens which are connected by stud connector or reinforcement connectors are compared and analyzed From the comparison, it was shown that the connection between concrete and steel could be predicted by using the modeling technique used in this paper.

  • To investigate the flexural stiffness of the steel-composite beam, the contributions of the concrete slab and steel beam to the stiffness were considered separately. The method for flexural stiffness of the composite beam, considering the stiffness of the concrete slab and steel beam, was proposed in this paper. In addition, finite element models of the composite beams were established and validated. Parametric analyses were carried out to study the effects of different parameters on the neutral axis distance reduction factors of the concrete slab and steel beam. Afterward, the neutral axis distance reduction factors were fitted, and the stiffness combination coefficients of the two parts were solved. Based on the stiffness combination coefficients, the flexural stiffness of the composite beam can be obtained. The proposed method was validated by the tested and analyzed results. The method has a simple form and high accuracy in predicting the flexural stiffness of the steel-concrete composite beam, even though the degree of shear connection is less than 0.5.

  • Hollow structural section (HSS) columns have been increasingly popular due to their structural and architectural merits. However, practical difficulty lies in developing proper connections. The through-diaphragm connections are considered as suitable connection type that is widely adopted in Asian countries. However, the stress concentration occurs at the location connecting through-diaphragm and steel beam. Furthermore, the actual load path from the beam flange is not uniformly transferred to the HSS column as conventionally assumed. In this paper, tensile tests were further conducted on three additional specimens with beam flange plate to evaluate the load versus displacement response. The load-displacement curves, yield and ultimate capacity, ductility ratio were obtained. Furthermore, the strain development at different loading levels was discussed comprehensively. It is shown that the studied connection configuration significantly reduces the stress concentration. Meanwhile, simplified trilinear load-displacement analytical model for specimen under tensile load was presented. Good agreement was found between the theoretical and experimental results.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are the primary type of vertical support used in building structures that sustain vertical loads. However, their strength may be insufficient due to fire, earthquake or volatile environments. The load demand may be increased due to new functional usages of the structure. The deformability of concrete columns can be greatly reduced under high axial load conditions. In response, a novel steel encasement that distinguishes from the traditional steel jacketing that is assembled by welding or bolt is developed. This novel strengthening method features easy installation and quick strengthening because direct fastening is used to connect the four steel plates surrounding the column. This new connection method is usually used to quickly and stably connect two steel components by driving high strength fastener into the steel components. The connections together with the steel plates behave like transverse reinforcement, which can provide passive confinement to the concrete. The confined column along with the steel plates resist the axial load. By this way, the axial load capacity and deformability of the column can be enhanced. Eight columns are tested to examine the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed method. The effects of the vertical spacing between adjacent connections, thickness of the steel plate and number of fasteners in each connection are studied to identify the critical parameters which affect the load bearing performance and deformation behavior. Lastly, a theoretical model is proposed for predicting the axial load capacity of the strengthened RC columns.

  • Through extensive research, there exist a new type of connection between railway bridge girders and steel-concrete composite panels. In addition to conventional shear connectors, newly developed blind bolts have been recently adopted for retrofitting. However, the body of knowledge on their influence and application to railway structures has not been thoroughly investigated. This study has thus placed a particular emphasis on the application of blind bolts on the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a feasible alternative constituent of railway track upgrading. Finite element modeling has been used to simulate the behaviours of the precast steel-concrete panels with common types of bolt connection using commercially available package, ABAQUS. The steel-concrete composite track slabs have been designed in accordance with Australian Standards AS5100. These precast steel-concrete panels are then numerically retrofitted by three types of most practical bold connections: head studded shear connector, Ajax blind bolt and Lindapter hollow bolt. The influences of bolt connections on load and stress transfers and structural behaviour of the composite track slabs are highlighted in this paper. The numerical results exhibit that all three bolts can distribute stresses effectively and can be installed on the bridge girder. However, it is also found that Lindapter hollow bolts are superior in minimising structural responses of the composite track slabs to train loading.

  • Concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) composite columns, either circular (CCFT) or rectangular (RCFT), have many economical and aesthetic advantages but the behavior of their connections are complicated. This study aims to investigate, through an experimental program, the performance and behavior of different connections configurations between circular concrete filled steel tube columns (CCFT) and gusset plates subjected to shear and axial compression loadings. The study included seventeen connection subassemblies consisting of a fixed length steel tube and gusset plate connected to the tube end with different details tested under half cyclic loading. A notable effect was observed on the behavior of the connections due to its detailing changes with respect to capacity, failure mode, ductility, and stress distribution.

  • Green Frame is a column-beam system constructed by composite precast column and beam connected by embedded steel of their. From when the precast concrete beam of Green Frame is installed, until the concrete of slab and connection joint is cured, the self load of beam shall be supported by the embedded steel of it. Therefore, the concrete of beam could be separated from the embedded steel if the shear connector of beam of Green Frame is designed by the code on Structural standard. So, this study suggest an equation for the shear connection of composite precast concrete beams of Green Frame. The result of this study will be used as the main equation of the calculation model for shear connectors of composite precast concrete beams.
