  • Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking(SSCC) of welded Steel pipe has been investigated. A specimens are stressed into the synthetic sea water saturated with H$_2$S. Therefore SSCC occur at the hardnest point. we are discusses the test methods used for laboratory corrosion testing of welded steel pipe and the results of test.

  • Bend test for metallic materials was conducted on samples of galvanized steel pipes being used in greenhouse farms. A secular change of yield strength for galvanized steel pipes was analyzed with the part of buried in the ground and exposed in the atmosphere. From those experimental results and corrosion rate of galvanized film, the standard durable years for pipe framed greenhouses are estimated that the small sized pipe houses of movable type is 7∼8 years and the large sized pipe houses of fixed type is 14∼15 years.

Multi-sensor Visual inspection for Seamless Steel Pipe´s Straightness

  • In this paper, an on-line multi-sensor visual inspection technique for seamless steel pipe´s straightness is developed. The basic principle of the visual measuring method is detailed. The modeling of visual sensor, measurement system and data processing are presented. In order to test the accuracy of the multi-sensor visual inspection, an experiment inspecting the straightness of a 1500mm long seamless steel pipe is made. The experiment results show that the visual inspection technique can achieve on-line measurement and offers high precision and stability.

  • In case the systems have radioactivity, toxic liquid or expensive fluid, and have to be performed repair work at one point of the system pipe, the formation of an internal ice plug by the removal of heat from the pipe is often consideredas a useful method. In this procedure, an annular jacket is placed around the pipe, and the jacket is then filled with liquid Nitrogen(-196.deg. C). Thermal analysis by the finite element method based on the laboratory experiments has been constructed. The result of the finite element analysis on the experimental model shows to be reasonable, and thus the finite element analysis for different pipe size, material and thickness has been performed to see if the ice plugging procedure in various applications can be safely performed without possibility of damage to the pipe. It has been confirmed that in carbon steel pipes the maximum stress is found around the boundary of the freezing jacket, and the stress increases as pipe thickness increases, but the maximum stress shows no consistency along the increment of the pipe diameter. The maximum stresses appear lower than yield stress in carbon steel. It has been also shown that in stainless steel pipes the maximum stresses are also found around the boundary of the freezing jacket, but almost the same value in spite of different pipe size an thickness, and the maximum stresses show slightly higher than the yield stress of the stainless steel.

Ultimate Behavior of GFRP Shell Structure Stiffened by Steel Pipe Ring (강관링으로 보강된 GFRP 쉘구조의 극한 거동)

  • The experiment and FE analysis of ultimate behavior of GFRP cylindrical shell structure stiffened by steel pipe ring instead of rectangular cross-section ring was presented. Four kinds of test models were designed and flexural failure experiment was performed to investigate ultimate behavior characteristic according to the size of cross section of steel pipe ring and diameter of GFRP shell. Material properties of specimens were experimented by bending, tensile and compressive test. Displacements and strains were measured to evaluate failure behavior of steel pipe ring and GFRP shell structure. The experimental results were compared with the FEA results by commercial program ABAQUS. It is observed that GFRP shell structure stiffened by steel ring have enough ductility to bending failure, and an increase of bending rigidity of steel ring is very effective to increase of failure strength of GFRP shell structure.

The Effect of Longitudinal Stiffeners on Load Carrying Capacity in Steel Pipe-Section Piers (원형강교각에서 수직보강재가 내하력에 미치는 영향)

  • To increase the efficiency of the urban areas, pipe section steel piers, which have relatively small sections, must be constructed. Since smaller sections mean decreased load capacity, longitudinal stiffeners were applied to the pipe section steel piers to increase their load capacity. Increased load capacity through longitudinal stiffeners, however, could not yet be confirmed. Therefore, the effect of longitudinal stiffeners on the load capacity of pipe section steel piers still needs to be studied. In this paper, the effect of the number of longitudinal stiffeners on the load capacity of steel piers was determined by carrying out elastic plastic FE analysis on material and geometric non-linearity. In addition, comparative analyses of the parameters of the width, the thickness of longitudinal stiffeners, and the slenderness ratio of steel piers were carried out to determine the effects of longitudinal stiffeners.

Prediction of Flow Behavior and Pressure Drop of Spirally Corrugated Steel Pipe (나선형 파형강관에서의 유동특성 및 압력강하 예측)

  • Numerical investigation has been conducted to figure out flow behavior and pressure drop characteristics of spirally corrugated steel pipe which is widely used in civil, industrial and agricultural field owing to many advantages such as good corrosion resistance and durability, strength, easy and quick installation. Also the poly-ethylene coating spirally corrugated steel pipe has the long life under condition of sea water immerged. In the present study, flow behavior in the spirally corrugated pipe and influence of P/d/sub h/(ratio of wave pitch to hydraulic diameter) to pressure drop are investigated by CFD with various Reynolds number. And also friction factor is estimated by pressure drop obtained by flow analysis. According to computation results, the flow runs spirally up and down along the spiral corrugation in the vicinity of wall, but the effect of spiral corrugation disappears in core region of pipe. As P/d/sub h/ becomes small, more pressure drop occurs in spirally corrugated Pipe. Besides, friction factor augmentation becomes much larger as Re increases. In case of p/d/sub h/=0.38, Pressure drop and friction factor of spirally corrugated pipe are about four times larger than smooth pipe at Re: 1.46×10/sup 6/.

Development of an Automatic Pipe-cutting Machine by Axiomatic Approach (공리적 접근을 통한 자동 가스절단기의 개발)

  • The pipe-cutting machine developed in this study is a portable device used to cut a steel pipe. The machine, which is attached to the steel pipe by magnetic force, is moving around the pip e using four wheels. It also works for straight cutting of a steel plate. For the higher precision and labor time reduction, the automation of a pipe-cutting process is needed. However, it is not easily achieved because of vibrations and the loss of track. It is also found that the problems of the automation arise from the coupling of the functional requirements for the pipe-cutting machine. So, it is very difficult io solve the problems by a conventional design method. To overcome the difficulties the new design process for the pipe-cutting machine is established by axiomatic approach in this paper. Based on the Independence Axiom design process, a new product is designed and manufactured. Finally, it is verified by experiments that the performance of the automatic pipe-cutting machine is improved

The Determination of Optimal Steel Pipe Wall Thickness Considering Ground Condition (지반 조건을 고려한 최적강관두께의 결정)

  • By considering manufacture and economic factor, the steel pipes have been employed for water supply pipeline with large diameter. The standard to decide a thickness of pipe was provided by the waterworks standard (Ministry of Construction & Transportation, 1992) in South Korea. However, there was no the systematic standard to confirm a thickness of pipe in it. Thus, it should be able to apply to unsuitable the Stewart formula for the buried pipe to design for an optimum thickness of pipe. In order to meet revised the waterworks standard (The Ministry of Environment, 1997), it has been considered both the ground condition and all of the stresses to compute a thickness of pipe. As a results, a method is suggested to determine thickness of pipe after comparing and validating the obtained results with the established results from the Stewart formula.

Structural Capacity of High Strength Steel Pipe Pile After Pile Driving (고강도 강관말뚝의 항타후 구조성능 분석)

  • Steel pipe piles have been used as various deep foundation materials for a long time. Recent increase in steel material cost has made engineers reluctant in using it even with its good quality and ease of construction. Therefore when constructing with steel pipe pile, the decision to reuse the excessive pile length that is cut off from the designed pile head elevation after pile driving can be cost saving. This has caused many constructors to reuse the pile leftovers with new piles, but the absence of quantitative structural capacity behaviors of steel pipe pile after pile driving or appropriate countermeasures and standards in reusing steel pipe pile has resulted in wrong applications, pile structural integrity problems, inappropriate limitation of reusable pile length, etc. The structural performance analysis between a new pile and a pile that has undergone working state and ultimate state stress level during pile driving was performed in this research by means of comparing the results between the dynamic pile load test, tensile load test, charpy energy test and fatigue test for high strength steel of $440N/mm^2$ yield strength. Test results show that under working load conditions the yield strength variation is less than 2% and for ultimate load conditions the variation is less than 5% for maximum total blow count of 3000. The results have been statistically analyzed to check the sensitivity of each factors involved. From the test results, reusability of steel pipe pile lies not in the main pipe yield strength deviation but in the reduction of absorb energy, strength changes and quality control at the welded section, shape deformation and local buckling during pile driving.
