A new I-girder consisted of top concrete-filled tubular flange and corrugated web has been proved to have high resistance to both global buckling of the entire girder and local buckling of the web. This study carries out theoretical analysis and experimental tests for this new I-girder to investigate the stress distribution in the flanges and in the corrugated web. Based on some reasonable assumptions, theoretical equations for calculating the normal stress in the flanges and the shear stress in the corrugated web are presented. To verify the accuracy of the presented equations, experimental tests on two specimens were carried out, and the experimental results of stress distribution were used to assess the theoretical prediction. Comparison between the two results indicates that the presented theoretical equations have enough accuracy for calculating the stress in the new I-girder, and thus they can be used reliably in the design stage.

Prestressed composite girder bridges with concrete infilled steel tube at negative flexural moment region takes the advantages of enhancing local buckling and flexural resistances resulting from the lateral confining effect of concrete due to the interactive reaction in the interface layer of steel tube and concrete. The interface behavior in concrete infilled tube of the test composite girder is analyzed by 8-node zero thickness interface finite element combined with 3-D. elastoplastic concrete constitutive model and 3-D. elastoplastic Mindlin shell element. The interface effects between infillled concrete and steel tube are investigated through the comparision of the experimental and numerical results.
This paper deals with the flexural performance of a composite girder system designed to readily form a composite section without a formwork and to easily realize multistage preflexing and prestressing. After a 3-Dimensional finite element modeling for construction stage analysis, the parametric numerical analysis was performed to analyse the stress distribution on the composite girder sections and the prestressing effects along with concrete pouring method and strand tensioning method. Based on the stress distribution analysis, a favorable construction stage model has been rationally chosen and then the ultimate flexural strengths were evaluated to conduct a comparative study, which exceed the nominal flexural strength suggested by the current design specification(ASD). It can be concluded that the proposed composite girder and fabrication procedure should have a sufficient structural performance.
The reliability analysis of simply-supported and continuous composite plate girder and box girder bridges under flexure was performed to provide a basic data for the development of LRFD c ode. The bridges were designed based on LRFD specification with newly proposed design live load which was developed by analyzing traffic statistics from highways and local roads. A performance function for flexural failure was expressed as a function of the flexural resistance of composite section and the design moments due to permanent load and live load. For the flexural resistance, the statistical parameters obtained by analyzing over 16,000 domestic structural steel samples were used. Several different values of bias factors for the live load moment from 1.0 to 1.2 were used. Due to the lack of available domestic measured data on the moment by permanent loads, the same statistical properties used in the calibration of ASHTO-LRFD were ap plied. The reliability indices for the composite girder bridges with various span lengths, different live load factors, and bias fact or for the live load were obtained by applying the Rackwitz-Fiessler technique.
Composite beams with corrugated steel webs represent a new innovative system which has emerged in the past decade for medium span in the construction technology. The use of composite beams with corrugated steel webs results in a range of benefits, including flexible spaces and reduced foundation costs in the construction technology. The thin corrugated web affords a significant weight reduction of these beams, compared with hot-rolled or welded ones. In the current research, an optimal designed I-girder beam with corrugated web has been proposed to improve the structural performance of continuous composite girder under bending moment. The experimental program has been conducted for six simply supported composite beams with different loading conditions. The tested specimens are designed by using one of the stochastic techniques called hunting search algorithm. In the optimization process, besides the thickness of concrete slab and studs, corrugated web properties are considered as design variables. The design constraints are respectively implemented from Eurocode 3, BS-8110 and DIN 18-800 Teil-1. The last part of the study focuses on performing a numerical study on composite beams by utilizing finite element analysis and the bending behavior of steel girders with corrugated webs experimentally and numerically verified the results. A nonlinear analysis was carried out using the finite element software ANSYS on the composite beams which were modelled using the elements ten-node high order quadrilateral type.
Prestressed composite girders provide efficient composite action by applying prestress to the sub-encasing concrete. In this study, an enhanced prestressed composite girder with forms suspended from the steel girder is utilized. Long-term behavior of the prestressed composite girder is estimated using age-adjusted effective modulus method, which is verified experimentally using measurements obtained from an in-service bridge. Then, parametric study is carried out to investigate the influences caused by ambient temperature, humidity, prestressing and concrete casting date.
Steel-concrete composite rigid-frame bridge is a type of integral bridge having advantages in bridge maintenance and structural efficiency from eliminating expansion joints and bridge supports, the main problems in bridge maintenance. The typical steel-concrete composite rigid-frame bridge has the girder-abutment connection where a part of its steel girder is embedded in abutment for integrity. However, the detail of typical girder-abutment connection is complex and increases the construction cost, especially when a part of steel girder is embedded. Recently, a new type of bridge was proposed to compensate for the disadvantages of complex details and cost increase. The compensation are expected to improve efficiency of construction by simplifying the construction detail of the girder-abutment connection. In this study, a static load test has been carried out to examine the behavior of the girder-abutment connection using real-scale specimens. The results of the test showed that the girder-abutment connection of proposed girder bridge has sufficient flexural capacity and rebars to control concrete crack should be placed on the top of abutment.
In the recent years, steel box girder bridges have been extensively used due to high bending stiffness, torsional rigidity, and rapid construction. Therefore, researches related to this girder bridge have been widely conducted. This paper investigates the effect of residual stresses and geometric imperfections on the load-carrying capacity of steel box girder bridges spanning 30 m and 50 m. A three - dimensional finite element model of the steel box girder with a closed section was developed and analyzed using ABAQUS software. Nonlinear inelastic analysis was used to capture the actual response of the girder bridge accurately. Based on the results of analyses, the superimposed mode of webs and flanges was recommended for considering the influence of initial geometric imperfections of the steel box model. In addition, 4% and 16% strength reduction rates on the load - carrying capacity of the perfect structural system were respectively recommended for the girders with compact and non-compact sections, whose designs satisfy the requirements specified in AASHTO LRFD standard. As a consequence, the research results would help designers eliminate the complexity in modeling residual stresses and geometric imperfections when designing the steel box girder bridge.
This paper reports recent developments concerning the application of Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) to the structural analysis of steel-concrete composite bridges. The potential of GBT-based semi-analytical or finite element-based analyses in this field is illustrated/demonstrated by showing that both accurate and computationally efficient solutions may be achieved for a wide range of structural problems, namely those associated with the bridge (i) linear (first-order) static, (ii) vibration and (iii) lateral-torsional-distortional buckling behaviours. Several illustrative examples are presented, which concern bridges with two distinct cross-sections: (i) twin box girder and (ii) twin I-girder. Allowance is also made for the presence of discrete box diaphragms and both shear lag and shear connection flexibility effects.
This study examines the influence of curved, steel, I-girder bridge configuration on girder end reactions and cross frame member forces during seismic events. Simply-supported bridge finite element models were created and examined under seismic events mimicking what could be experienced in AASHTO Seismic Zone 2. Bridges were analyzed using practical ranges of: radius of curvature; girder and cross frame spacings; and lateral bracing configuration. Results from the study indicated that: (1) radius of curvature had the greatest influence on seismic response; (2) interior (lowest radius) girder reactions were heavily influenced by parameter variations and, in certain instances, uplift at their bearings could be a concern; (3) vertical excitation more heavily influenced bearing and cross frame seismic response; and (4) lateral bracing helped reduce seismic effects but using bracing along the entire span did not provide additional benefit over placing bracing only in bays adjacent to the supports.
