The progressive collapse phenomenon is generally regarded as dynamic. Due to the impracticality of nonlinear dynamic computations for practitioners, an interest arises for the development of equivalent static pushover procedures. The present paper proposes a methodology to identify such a procedure for sudden column removals, using energetic evaluations to determine the pushover loads to apply. In a dynamic context, equality between the cumulated external and internal works indicates a vanishing kinetic energy. If such a state is reached, the structure is sometimes assumed able to withstand the column removal. Approximations of these works can be estimated using a static computation, leading to an estimate of the displacements at the zero kinetic energy configuration. In comparison with other available procedures based on such criteria, the present contribution identifies loading patterns to associate with the zero-kinetic energy criterion to avoid a single-degree-of-freedom idealisation. A parametric study over a family of regular steel structures of varying sizes uses non-linear dynamic computations to assess the proposed pushover loading pattern for the cases of central and lateral ground floor column failure. The identified quasi-static loading schemes are shown to allow detecting nearly all dynamically detected plastic hinges, so that the various beams are provided with sufficient resistance during the design process. A proper accuracy is obtained for the plastic rotations of the most plastified hinges almost independently of the design parameters (loads, geometry, robustness), indicating that the methodology could be extended to provide estimates of the required ductility for the beams, columns, and beam-column connections.
The precast concrete beam-column connectors to retrofit an apartment building were investigated experimentally. Five precast concrete beam-column connectors were considered to develop a modified model which was adapted to domestic construction conditions from the DDC(dywidag ductile connection) of Germany. Special H-shape steel hardware was used to decrease the width of column and beams for the construction of external frames in apartments. It was found that the DDC had high joint strength and ductility, however failed in inclined shear crackings in the columns. The modified one showed better behaviors in tests because they did not show critical column crackings at failure. The test result of modified one with grouting was compared to that of the one without grouting within the duct. The one with grouting showed higher strength and ductility in failure than that without grouting.
Reduced beam section (RBS) moment resisting connections are among the most economical and practical rigid steel connections developed in the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge and the 1995 Kobe earthquakes. Although the performance of RBS connection has been widely studied, this connection has not been subject to in the skewed conditions. In this study, the seismic performance of dogbone connection was investigated at different angles. The Commercial ABAQUS software was used to simulate the samples. The numerical results are first compared with experimental results to verify the accuracy. Nonlinear static analysis with von Mises yield criterion materials and the finite elements method were used to analyze the behavior of the samples The selected Hardening Strain of materials at cyclic loading and monotonic loading were kinematics and isotropic respectively The results show that in addition to reverse twisting of columns, change in beam angle relative to the central axis of the column has little impact on hysteresis response of samples. Any increase in the angle, leads to increased non-elastic resistance. As for Weak panel zone, with increase of the angle between the beam and the column, the initial submission will take place at a later time and at a larger rotation angle in the panel zone and this represents reduced amount of perpendicular force exerted on the column flange. In balanced and strong panel zones, with increase in the angle between the beam and the central axis of the column, the reduced beam section (RBS), reaches the failure limit faster and at a lower rotation angle. In connection of skewed beam, balanced panel zone, due to its good performance in disposition of plasticity process away from connection points and high energy absorption, is the best choice for panel zone. The ratio of maximum moment developed on the column was found to be within 0.84 to 1 plastic anchor point, which shows prevention of brittle fracture in connections.
This study aims to introduce a new bracing system by which even super-wide frames with large openings can be braced. The proposed system, hereafter called Cable-Pulley Brace (CPB), is a tension-only bracing system with a rectilinear configuration. In CPB, a wire rope passes through a rectilinear path around the opening(s) and connects the lower corner of the frame to its opposite upper one. CPB is a secondary load resisting system with a nonlinear-elastic hysteretic behavior due to its initial pre-tension load. As a result, the required energy dissipation would be provided by the MRF itself, and the main intention of using CPB is to contribute to the initial and post-yield stiffness of the whole system. Using a stiffness calibration technique, optimum placement of the CPBs is discussed to yield a uniform displacement demand along the height of the structure. A displacement-based design procedure is proposed by which the MRF with CPB can be designed to achieve a uniform distribution of inter-story drifts with predefined values. Obtained results indicated that CPB leads to significant reductions in maximum and residual deformations of the MRF at the expense of minor increase in the maximum base shear and developed axial force demands in the columns. In the case of a typical 5-story residential building, compared to SMRF system, CPB system reduces maximum amounts of inter-story and residual drifts by 35% and 70%, respectively. Moreover, openings of the frame are not interrupted by the CPB. This is the most appealing feature of the proposed bracing system from architectural point of view.
In buildings structures, the flexural stiffness reduction of beams and columns due to concrete cracking plays an important role in the nonlinear load-deformation response of reinforced concrete structures under service loads. Most Seismic Design Codes do not precise effective stiffness to be used in seismic analysis for structures of reinforced concrete elements, therefore uncracked section properties are usually considered in computing structural stiffness. But, uncracked stiffness will never be fully recovered during or after seismic response. In the present study, the effect of concrete cracking on the lateral response of structure has been taken into account. Totally 120 cases of 3 Dimensional Dynamic Analysis which considers the real and accidental torsional effects are performed using ETABS to determine the effective structural system across the height, which ensures the performance and the economic dimensions that achieve the saving in concrete and steel amounts thus achieve lower cost. The result findings exhibits that the dual system was the most efficient lateral load resisting system based on deflection criterion, as they yielded the least values of lateral displacements and inter-storey drifts. The shear wall system was the most economical lateral load resisting compared to moment resisting frame and dual system but they yielded the large values of lateral displacements in top storeys. Wall systems executes tremendous stiffness at the lower levels of the building, while moment frames typically restrain considerable deformations and provide significant energy dissipation under inelastic deformations at the upper levels. Cracking found to be more impact over moment resisting frames compared to the Shear wall systems. The behavior of various lateral load resisting systems with respect to time period, mode shapes, storey drift etc. are discussed in detail.

Circular concrete-filled tubes (CFTs) are composite members, which consists of a steel tube and concrete infill. CFTs have been used as building columns and bridge piers due to several advantages such as their strength-to-size efficiency and facilitation of rapid construction. Extensive experimental studies about CFT have been conducted for past decades. However experimental results alone are not sufficient to support the engineering of these components. Complementary advanced numerical models are needed to simulate the behavior of CFT to extend the experimental research and develop predictive tools required for design and evaluation of structural systems. In this study, a finite element modeling technique for CFT was developed. The confinement effects, and behavior of CFT subjected various types of loading predicted by the proposed finite element model for CFT were verified by comparing with test results.

The material and mechanical properties in the high temperature area of 40 to 100 MPa high strength concrete structural member was identified based on mixing of fiber cocktail and the structural element fire behavior simulation through the finite element analysis method (ABAQUS) was interpreted. The results are as follows. First, it was interpreted that the test specimen with concrete fiber cocktail mixed was more controllable in the maximum shrinkage than the one with concrete fiber cocktail not mixed the controllable range was about 25% to 55%. This means that shrinkage is controllable through mixing of fiber cocktail for the high strength concrete columns. Second, this study didn't consider the explosive spalling by the pore pressure within high strength concrete. If the properties for the pore pressure within high strength concrete is considered and database by strength and by inner temperature of various high strength concrete and steel materials are established in the future, it is interpreted that the technical foundation will be laid for performance based design of fire resistant construction.

Social interest in the seismic retrofit of the structure is growing massive earthquake that occurred recently. The brittle fracture of Non-seismically designed Columns lead to full collapse of the building. In the past, cross-sectional expansion method, a steel plate reinforcing method is applied mainly in recent years, fiber-reinforced method utilizing the advantages of the composite material are preferred. However, the reinforcement methods such as this, there is a drawback to induce physical damage to structures, and time consuming work space is large. IIn this study, FRP seismic reinforcement was developed using the Aluminum connector and the composite material (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer). Then, the optimum quantities of FRP seismic reinforcement was determined using a nonlinear finite element analysis program. Finally, the quantity decision process through the design and analysis of FRP reinforcement was suggested.

Test specimen test was performed using concrete reinforced with fiber sheet and the test variables were based on the kinds of fiber and the number of reinforcement layers. Using steel-concrete reinforced with fiber sheet, compression tests were performed and the test variables were the kinds of fiber, number reinforcement layers and reinforcement layer order. The following results were obtained: 1) It was demonstrated that compressive strength of the test specimen reinforced during test specimen test and member test increased as the number of reinforcement layers increased. 2) It was shown that non-reinforced test, specimen were destroyed during the member tests, but the specimen reinforced with CFS destroyed and the GFS-reinforced specimen and composite reinforced specimen showed ductile destruction. 3) As a result of tests on kinds of reinforcement fiber, it was demonstrated that CFS-reinforced test specimen had higher compressive strength in a 공시체 test. In the member test, 2ply-and 3ply-GFS reinforced specimens except lplied one had higher compressive strength. It was because partial destruction occurred due to the rate of height/section. 4) For layer strength order, compared with test specimen reinforced only with a single reinforced material, test specimen reinforced with CFS and GFS, and test specimen reinforced with CFS first showed better results in compressive strength and ductility judgement.

RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures are considered as cost-benefit and durable however performances of structural safety and durability are degraded due to steel corrosion. Service life in RC structure is differently evaluated due to different local environmental conditions even if it is exposed to the same chloride attack. In the paper, 25 concrete cores from field investigation are obtained from 4 RC columns with duration of 3.5~4.5 years exposed to sea water. Through total chloride content measurement, surface chloride contents and apparent diffusion coefficients are evaluated. Service life of the target structure is estimated through deterministic method based on Fick's $2^{nd}$ Law and probabilistic method based on durability failure probability, respectively. Probability method is evaluated to be more conservative and relatively decreased service life is evaluated in tidal zone and splash zone over 40.0 m. Chloride penetration behavior with coring location from sea level and the present limitations of durability design method are investigated in the paper.
