  • Steel and iron manufacture works exist that many latency risk as melting liquid of high temperature, work of high place, and so on. Once in a while, the accident case make use of basic data for latency risk analysis in a place of business. In this paper, we investigated the cause of the accident in steel an iron works. The result, we came across that many latency risk in steel and iron manufacture works. The main type of risk are fall, narrow, come flying, etc. Most of the latency risk type are repetition and conventional accident. Accordingly, steel and manufacture works must prevent to repetition and conventional accident.

  • Steel and iron works have place many hazard or risk factor as a high temperature material, a high place, and so on. Accordingly, steel and iron works need system for risk assessment. In this paper, we development of risk assessment system for steel and iron works. In case study applied at the steel enterprise. The resultant, we can discovery that an human factor is an important question form risk assessment.

  • In the steel industry, steel is manufactured and processed to produce a variety of steel products. The industry provides fundamental materials to the whole range of industries including car, ship, electric appliance and construction industries, so that it is very important as an infrastructure industry. The steel manufacture process involves aerial work, many danger factors caused by the treatment with hazardous gases including BFG and COG and by high pressure gases including H2, O2, N2 and LPG. It requires the management over the large area because many workers work in a plant. The potential dangers in the steel plant were identified and the effect of the danger assessment was verified through the analysis of the danger assessment for the steel plant. The allowed degree of danger was lowered after the improvement through the danger assessment in the plant where the case studies were conducted, which indicates that the danger assessment is highly effective.

  • Iron component in wasted hydrochloric etching solutions from steel works were recovered by electrolysis. The electric conductances of the solutions, as the function of the bath temperature and the ferrousion concen-tration, were measured and the result of the original solution was K=(0.0012+0.0005$\times$10-3T-0.1160$\times$10-6T2)$\times$102S.m-1(T in $^{\circ}C$) The current efficiency was better for the bath using a soluble steel plate anode than for the bath using an insoluble platinized titanium one. Densed electrolytic iron having the purity of higher than 99.99% was ob-tained at the electrolysis conditions of the cathodic current density of 15A/dm2, the bath temperature of $70\pm$$5^{\circ}C$ and the ferrous ion concentration of about 100g/l. The morphologies of the deposited iron were observed by SEM.

  • In steel works, Locomotives and torpedo ladle cars are used to convey the smelted iron that comes out Blast Furnace to the steel-making mill. Above conveying vehicles are operated in all steel works area. And to trace their positions, after partitioned their areas, Automatic Vehicle Identification(RF-ID method) is installed on the railroad and identifies vehicle numbers. But AVI facilities have many problem that means that are too expensive, cost too much maintenance fee and inefficient management.   • As the modern industrial processes become more complex, it is getting more difficult to model and control the processes. Naturally, an advanced type of DCS(Distributed Control System) with higher level functions is being sought. Advanced DCS is a DCS with advanced functions such as fault diagnosis, GPC(Generalized Predictive Control), NN(Neural Network), and Fuzzy Control. In this thesis, we have studied a fuzzy control algorithm for realizing an advanced DCS. Its algorithm is implemented in a form of function code which is a process control language, being used by the industrial engineers. To verify the realized function code of the fuzzy control, the function code is applied to a continuous casting process of the Pohang Iron & Steel Works in Kwangyang. The rules of the fuzzy control were collected via interviews of the field operators and their operation documents. Finally under a real-time operating system environment, usability of the function code of the fuzzy control is shown via simulation for the continuous casting process.

  • Some of the important and vital roles performed by the Health Care Center of Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd.(POSCO) are the periodic monitoring of the work sites as well as regular medical check-ups for each workers to ensure both pleasant and safe working conditions and to protect employees' health. Pohang Steel Works, which has 42 plants, 26 facilities and 12,000 employees, has an annual crude steel production capacity of 9,670,000 using 24,500,000 ton of raw materials. We have measured lots of areal and personal working environment according to Occupational Safety and Health Law semiannually. All data collected on industrial hygiene is stored and managed by personal computer. The developed of a computerized industrial hygiene control system linked to the company's main computer system will provide efficient evaluation of the working environment as well as critical informations on employees' health. Development of this system had begun in May, 1992 and was completed in March, 1994. The computerized industrial hygiene control system can; 1. store industrial hygiene data, providing key pertinent to the diagnosis of occupational related illnesses, and if necessary, the basis for improving the working environment, 2. decide type and time of medical examination of each work for exposure to specific agents, and supply proper protection periodically, 3. prevent occupational related illnesses through evaluation of environmental and biological monitoring, and performance of epidemiological surveillance, 4. facilitate proper job placement through linking of industrial hygiene control and personnel information systems, 5. monitor job processes. levels of chemical agents used, and new agents introduced, 6. and increase productivity by saving time resulting from the implementation of the computerized sysyte,

  • Recently, AC variable-speed motors are used for many steel rolling mill drive systems, because of their low maintenance and enhanced control performance. We have been applied GTO inverters for these AC motor drive systems since 1993. We have developed world largest 6-inch diameter GTO and large capacity 3-level GTO inverter up to 20000(kVA). As an example, in this paper, we describe the main circuit, system arrangement and control features of the 6-inches GTO inverters to drive rougher mills for hot strip mill of Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. The motor capacity is 6000(kW), and it's overload is 250(%).

  • In order to achieve stable and efficient use of energy at iron and steel works, a model for the prediction of supply and demand of electric power system is developed on the basis of the information on operation and particular patterns of electric power consumption. The optimal amount of electric power to be purchased and the optimal fuel allocation for the in-house electric power plants are also obtained by a mixed-integer linear programming(MILP) and a nonlinear programming (NLP) solutions, respectively. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed model are investigated by several illustrative examples. The simulation results show the satisfactory energy saving by the optimal solution obtained through this research.
