Phononic crystals are composite materials consisting of a periodic arrangement of scattering inclusions in a host material. One of the most important properties of phononic crystals is the existence of band gaps, i.e., ranges of frequencies at which acoustic waves cannot propagate through the structure. The present study aims to investigate theoretically and experimentally the acoustic band structures in two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystals consisting of periodic square arrays of stainless steel solid cylinders with a diameter of 1 mm and a lattice constant of 1.5 mm in water. The theoretical dispersion relation that depicts the relationship between the frequency and the wave vector was calculated along the ${\Gamma}X$ direction of the first Brillouin zone using the finite element method to predict the band structures in the 2D phononic crystals. The transmission and the reflection coefficients were measured in the 2D phononic crystals with 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 layers of stainless steel cylinders stacked in the perpendicular direction to propagation at normal incidence. The theoretical dispersion relation exhibited five band gaps at frequencies below 2 MHz, the first gap appearing around a frequency of 0.5 MHz. The location and the width of the band gaps experimentally observed in the transmission and the reflection coefficients appeared to coincide well with those determined from the theoretical dispersion relation.

During the pipe forming process, a steel plate undergoes inelastic behavior multiple times under a load condition repeating tension and compression in the circumferential direction. It derives local reduction or increase of yield strength within the thickness of steel pipes by the plastic hardening and Bauschinger effect. In this study, a combined hardening model is proposed to effectively predict variations of yield strength in the circumferential direction of API-X65 and X70 steel pipes with relatively low t/D ratio during the forming process, which is expected to experience accumulated plastic strain of 2~3%, the typical Lüder band range in a low-carbon steel. Cyclic tensile tests of API-X65 and X70 steels were performed, and the parameters of the proposed model for the steels were calibrated using the test results. Bending-flattening tests to simulate repeated tension and compression during pipe forming were followed for API-X65 and X70 steels, and the results were compared with those by the proposed model and Zou et al. (2016), in order to verify the process of material model calibration based on tension-compression cyclic test, and the accuracy of the proposed model. Finally, parametric analysis for the yield strength of the steel plate in the circumferential direction of UOE pipe was conducted to investigate the effects of t/D and expansion ratios after O-forming on the yield strength. The results confirmed that the model by Zou et al. (2016) underestimated the yield strength of steel pipe with relatively low t/D ratio, and the parametric analysis showed that the t/D and expansion ratio have a significant impact on the strength of steel pipe.
In The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the general yield brittle fractures were observed in beam-column connections of steel building frames. Among many influencing factors which affect the general yield brittle fracture, it can be considered that fracture toughness has substantial effects. Some studies are making clear the required toughness for the base metal and the weld metal, but general values are not proposed. Moreover, it seems that it is also important to pay attention to the toughness decrease in the weld heat affected zone (weld HAZ), because the toughness decrease occurs in the HAZs of mild steel. In this paper, the relationship between toughness of simulated HAZs of "the rolled steels for building structures (SN)" and the weld heat-input limit of the SN steel are investigated, in an attempt to provide the required toughness for HAZs. The relationships between the increase of the hardness value and toughness, and changes of microstructure after weld heat-input are also discussed. The main results are summarized as follows. 1) The SN400B can keep its toughness at higher heat-inputs compare to the SN490Bs. 2) The steel grade, which becomes harder than other steel grades at the same heat-input, has smaller absorbed energy and smaller limit of heat-input. 3) The weld heat-input limit of the SN400B and the SN490B are proposed separately for some required toughness values.

Induction bending is a method that allows the bending of any material that conducts electricity. This technology applies a bending force to a material that has been locally heated by an eddy current induced by a fluctuating electromagnetic field. Induction bending uses an inductor to locally heat steel through induction. This results in a narrow heat band in the shape to be bent. In general, the reduction of thickness attenuation of a large-diameter steel pipe is not allowed to exceed 12.5%. In this paper, in order to meet the standard of thickness attenuation reduction, a non-uniform heating temperature jump-bending process was investigated. As a result, the developed bending technique meets the requirements of thickness attenuation reduction for large-diameter steel pipes.
This study was aimed to evaluate the quality of flash welded joints and optimize the welding process for flash butt welding of 780MPa grade high strength steel. And then the relationship between the welding process variables and the joint quality would be established. The effect of process variables between flashing and upsetting process was elucidated. Microstructure observation of the joint indicated that the decarburized band was mainly changed with upsetting process. Width of HAZ was also related to the upsetting conditions rather than the flashing conditions. Generally maximum hardness at HAZ was correlated with Ceq of steel and the empirical relationship was obtained to estimate the HAZ properties. Tensile elongation at the joint was usually decreased with increasing the initial clamping distance. Investigation of fracture surface after tensile and bending tests reveal that the origin of cracking at the joint was oxide inclusions composed of $SiO_2$, MnO, $Al_2O_3$, and/or FeO. The amount of inclusions was dependent on the composition ratio of Mn/Si in steel. If this ratio was above 4, the amount of inclusions was low and then the resistance to cracking at the joint was enough to maintain the joint performance. It was obtained that the flashing process influenced the conditions for the energy input to establish uniform or nonuniform molten layer, while the upsetting conditions influenced the joint strength. Heat input variable during flashing process was also discussed with the joint properties.

The effect of initial orientation on the microstructure and texture evolution of two ferritic stainless steels was investigated. the columnar and equiaxed crystal specimens which were prepared from continuous casting slab were hot rolled annealed cold rolled and annealed respectively. The rolling and recrystallization textures at each process stage were examined by orientation distribution function (ODF) and electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD); The observation showed that the orientation density of the $\alpha$-fibre of hot rolled band of columnar crystal specimen was more pronounced than that of the equaxed one at the center layer. Nevertheless the cold rolled textures of Type 430 steel have demonstrated a rather similar development . Compared to Type 430 steel the development of the $\alpha$-fibre in the center layer of Type 409L steel was much more pronounced. The relation between texture evolution and ridging behaviour has been discussed.
Effect of nitriding on fatigue crack initiation and growth rate has been studied in Ni-Cr-Mo steel. Specimens were nitrided at $860^{\circ}C$ for 15 hr. The fatigue limit of nitrided specimens were superior to those ofannea1ed($860^{\circ}C$, 15 hr) specimens. Based on detailed observations of slip band and micro crack initiation, it is concluded that the excellent fatigue limit of nitrided specimens is attributed to improved slip initiation resistance by nitriding. The characteristic of fatigue crack growth rate of nitrided specimens was investigated by comparing with those of annealed specimens. It was found that the crack growth rate was markedly decreased and the threshold stress intensity factor range was improved by nitriding. It is concluded that the excellent fatigue limit of nitrided specimens is also attributed to improved fatigue crack growth rate and threshold stress intensity factor range by nitriding.
This study reviews dynamic deformation behavior of ultra-fine-grained Al alloys, ultra-fine-grained conventional low carbon steel and dual phase steel and Zr-based amorphous alloys. Dynamic tests were conducted using a Kolsky bar then the test data was analyzed in relation to resultant microstructures, mechanical properties and propensity of adiabatic shear band. In addition, deformed microstructures and fracture surfaces were used to investigate the behavior of both the dynamic deformation and fracture, and adiabatic shear banding. As a result, increasing microstructural homogeneity, strain hardenability and forming multiple shear bands could be a better way to increase the fracture resistance under dynamic loading as the formation of adiabatic shear bands was reduced or prevented.

With respect to structural carbon steel(SM 22C), it was studied how the overstress or the understress has effects on fatigue inside crack propagation curve of a two level stress. Obtained results are summarized as follows. (1) The overstress or the understress, at a slip band occurrence stage, does not change the inside crack propagation curve because the crack closure and opening phenomena do not happen. (2) The overstress, at a crack propagation stage, does not change the inside crack propagation curve because the crack closure of overstress in compressive state is nearly same that of base stress in compressive state. (3) The understress, at a crack propagation stage, give rise to an acceleration of crack growth because the crack closure of understree in compressive state is more open than that of base stress in compressive state and the phenomenon is the essential increase of the actual applied stress of the specimen.
Correlation between microstructural features and segregation of elements (Si, Mn, P and S) near the mid of thickness in the base metal and the synthetic HAZ was investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the degree of center segregation and weld cold cracking susceptibility in the thickness direction was also conducted by evaluating the effect of P concentration on the critical applied stress. The results obtained are as follows: 1) Pearlite band, containing the MnS type inclusion and a locally transformed structure with a higher hardness, was observed in the center segregation region. 2) By the weld thermal cycle, center segregation region was transformed to the white band which had a higher hardness than that of base metal due to a greater hardenability of concentrated Mn, P etc.. 3) Weld cold cracking susceptibility in the thickness direction was mainly dependent on the concentration of impurity elements rather than on the number of the segregated particles near the mid of thickness. 4) During welding, the higher concentrated region was easily changed into white band. Therefore, it could be predicted that the initiation and propagation of a cold crack would be promoted by increasing the restraint stress and hydrogen content.
