Present study deals with performance analysis of an inert gas generator (IGG) which is to be used as an effective mean to suppress the fire. The IGG uses a turbo jet cycle gas turbine engine to generate inert gas for fire extinguishing. It is generally known that a lesser degree of oxygen content in the product of combustion will increase the effectiveness of fire suppressing. An inert gas generator system with water injection will bring advantages of suffocating and cooling effects which are considered as vital factors for fire extinguishing. As the inert gas is injected to the burning site, it lowers the oxygen content of the air surrounding the flame as well as reduces the temperature around the fire as the vapour in the inert gas evaporates during the time of spreading. Some important aspects of influencing parameters, such as, air excess coefficient. $\alpha$, compressor pressure ratio, $ pi_c$, air temperature before combustion chamber, $T_2$, gas temperature after combustion chamber, $T_3$, mass flow rate of water injection, $M_w$, etc., on the performance of IGG system are investigated. Calculations of total amount of water needed to reduce the turbine exit temperature to pre-set nozzle exit temperature employing a heat exchanger were made to compare the economics of the system. A heat exchanger with two step cooling by water and steam is considered to be better than water cooling only. Computer programs were developed to perform the cycle analysis of the IGG system and heat exchanger considered in the present study.

This study aimed at assessing the analysis capability of thermal-hydraulic computer code, MARS for the behaviors of the core make-up tank (CMT). The sensitivity study on the nodalization to simulate the CMT was conducted, and the MARS calculations were compared with KAIST experimental data and RELAP5/MOD3.3 calculations. The 12-node model was fixed through a nodalization study to investigate the effect of the number of nodes in the CMT (2-, 4-, 8-, 12-, 16-node). The sensitivity studies on various parameters, such as water subcooling of the CMT, steam pressure, and natural circulation flow were done. MARS calculations were reasonable in the injection time and the effects of several parameters on the CMT behaviors even though the mesh-dependency should be properly treated for reactor applications.
The thermal stratification phenomena, frequently occurring in the component of nuclear power plant system such as pressurizer surge line, steam generator inlet nozzle, safety injection system (SIS), and chemical and volume control system (CVCS), can cause through-wall cracks, thermal fatigue, unexpected piping displacement and dislocation, and pipe support damage. The phenomenon is one of the unaccounted load in the design stage. However, the load have been found to be serious as nuclear power plant operation experience accumulates. In particular, the thermal stratification by the turbulent penetration or valve leak in the SIS and SCS pipe line can lead these safety systems to failure by the thermal fatigue. Therefore in this study an 1/10 scaledowned experimental rig had been designed and installed. And a series of experimental works had been executed to measure the temperature distribution (thermal stratification) in these systems by the turbulent penetration, valve leak, and heat transfer through valve. The results provide very valuable informations such as turbulent penetration depth, the possibility of thermal stratification by the heat transfer through valve, etc. Also the results are expected to be useful to understand the thermal stratification in these systems, establish the thermal stratification criteria and validate the calculation results by CFD Codes such as Fluent, Phenix, CFX.
The program on thermal-hydraulic evaluation by testing and analysis (THETA) for the development and licensing of the new design features in the APR1400 (Advanced Power Reactor-1400) is briefly introduced with a presentation on the research motivation and typical results of the separate effect tests and analyses of the major design features. The first part deals with multi-dimensional phenomena related to the safety analysis of the APR1400. One research area is related to the multidimensional behavior of the safety injection (SI) water in a reactor pressure vessel downcomer that uses a direct vessel injection type of SI system. The other area is associated with the condensation of steam jets and the resultant thermal mixing in a water pool; these phenomena are relevant to the depressurization of a reactor coolant system (RCS). The second part describes our efforts to develop new components for safety enhancements, such as a fluidic device as a passive SI flow controller and a sparger to depressurize the RCS. This work contributes to an understanding of the new thermal-hydraulic phenomena that are relevant to advanced reactor system designs; it also improves the prediction capabilities of analysis tools for multi-dimensional flow behavior, especially in complicated geometries.

When a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) occurs in a nuclear power plant, accident scenarios which can prevent core damage are defined based on break size. Current probabilistic safety assessment evaluates that core damage can be prevented under small-break LOCA (SBLOCA) and steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) with rapid cool down (RCD) strategy when all safety injection systems are unavailable. However, previous research has pointed out a limitation of RCD in terms of initiation time. Therefore, RCD success criteria estimation based on allowable coping time under a SBLOCA or SGTR when all safety injection systems are unavailable was performed based on time-line and thermal-hydraulic analyses. The time line analysis assumed a single emergency operating procedure flow, and the thermal hydraulic analysis utilized MARS-KS code with variables of break size, cooling rate, and operator allowable time. Results show while RCD is possible under SGTR, it is impossible under SBLOCA at the APR1400's current cooling rate limitation of 55 K/hr. A success criteria map for RCD under SBLOCA is suggested without cooling rate limitation.

Objectives: This study was conducted to assess how Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the medical condition of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Methods: The authors searched for relevant articles through the CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure-www.global.cnki.net) with the following keywords: The main search was for the term 'RLS,' with supportive words added such as 'Acupunture', 'Acupoint', 'Meridian', 'Moxibustion', 'Massage', 'Acupoint injection'. Our search yielded a total of 233 articles; there were a total of 71 articles related to clinical fields. We then analyzed the chosen articles using a number of criteria including the study type used, the treatment method utilized, and the main effect of the treatment. Results: The 71 analyzed articles utilized the following type of study design: 4 were classified as Quasi-randomised trial, 22 as Randomized Controlled Trial, and 45 as a case report. Regarding the treatment used for RLS, 25 studies examined a single treatment modality, while 46 studies examined a complex treatment modality. There were a total of 10 types of acupuncture treatment used in treating RLS; several massage and acupoint injection method were also found. Finally, there were a few studies that used Moxibustion, as well as several supportive treatments like Cupping, Moxibustion, Steam-Washing, TDP (Teding Dancibo Pu) were found. Conclusions: Traditional Chinese Medicine has used a variety of different study designs and treatments vis-a-vis RLS. These treatments are also used to treat the condition in South Korea.

When emergency core cooling system (ECCS) is operated during loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in a pressurized water reactor (PWR), pressurized thermal shock (PTS) phenomenon can occur as cooling water is injected into a cold leg, mixed with hot primary coolant, and then entrained into a reactor vessel. Insufficient flow mixing may cause temperature stratification and steam condensation. In addition, flow vibration may cause thermal stresses in surrounding structures. This will reduce the life of the reactor vessel. Due to the importance of PTS phenomenon, in this study, calculation was performed for Test 1 among six types of OECD/NEA ROSA tests with ANSYS CFX R.17. Predicted results were then compared to measured data. Additionally, because temperature difference between the hot coolant at the inlet of the cold leg and the cold cooling water at the inlet of the ECCS injection line is 200 K or more, buoyancy force due to density difference might have significant effect on thermal-hydraulic characteristics of flow. Therefore, in this study, the necessity to include buoyancy force term in governing equations for accurate prediction of single phase thermal stratification in both cold legs and downcomer by ECCS injection was numerically studied.
In order to estimate the effect of flow distributors connected to an upper nozzle of CMT(Core Makeup Tank) on the thermal-hydraulic characteristics in the tank, a simplified 2 inch Small Break Loss of Coolant Accident(SBLOCA) was simulated by skipping the decay power and Passive Residual Heat Removal System(PRHRS) actuation. The CMT is a part of safety injection systems in the SMART (System Integrated Modular Advanced Reactor). Each test was performed with reliable boundary conditions. It means that the pressure distribution is provided with repeatable and reproducible behavior during SBLOCA simulations. The maximum flow rates were achieved at around 350 seconds after the initial opening of the isolation valve installed in CMT. After a short period of decreased flow rate, it attained a steady injection flow rate after about 1,250 seconds. This unstable injection period of the CMT coolant is due to the condensation of steam injected into the upper part of CMT. The steady injection flow rate was about 8.4% higher with B-type distributor than that with A-type distributor. The gravity injection during hot condition tests were in good agreement with that during cold condition tests except for the early stages.

The present study is to analyze an integral test, BETHSY test 6.9c, which represent loss of RURS accident under mid-loop operation. Both the pressurizer manway and the steam generator outlet plenum manway are opened as vent paths in order to prevent the system from pressurization by removing the steam generated in the core. The main purposes are to gain insights into the physical phenomena and identify sensitive parameters. Assessment of capability of CATHARE2 prediction can be established the effective recovery procedures using the code in an actual plant. Most of important physical phenomena in the experiment could be predicted by the CATHARE2 code. The peak pressure in the upper plenum is predicted higher than experimental value by 7 kPa since the differential pressure between the pressurizer and the surge line is overestimated. The timing of core uncovery is delayed by 500 seconds mainly due to discrepancy in the core void distribution. It is demonstrated that openings of the pressurizer manwey and the steam generator manway can prevent the core uncovery using only gravity feed injection. Although some disagreements are found in the detailed phenomena, the code prediction is considered reasonable for the overall system behaviors.

$CO_2$ emission has been gradually increased due to rising fossil fuel use. A gliding arc plasma scrubber (GAPS) was proposed to destruct $CO_2$. For optimum design of GAPS, a CFD analysis has been conducted in different configuration for the system. The parameters considered included gas injection velocity at the nozzle and gas flow rate to gap between electrodes. The reactor configuration affected velocity fields which caused changes in the mixture fraction and the retention time. The mixing effect of $CO_2$ and supplied gas ($CH_4$ and steam) was enhanced by installing a orifice baffle. This revealed that the orifice baffle is effective in $CO_2$ conversion by positioning the reactants in the gas into the center of plasma discharge.
