  • Anthracnose of statice (Limonium sp. var. Misty Blue and L. sinuatum Mill. cv. Early Blue) occurred up to 20% in vinyl-houses at Buan, Imsil and Namwon from July to November, 1993. All isolates from the anthracnose symptoms were identified as Glomerella cingulata (Stonem.) Spauld. & Schrenk and its anamorph was Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Pens.) Sacc. Pathogenicity of the isolates was ascertained on the statice host by artificial inoculation. The symptoms on leaves appeared as circular brown spots in early stage and developed to zonate spots. The spot aggregated and diseased leaves were blighted. The symptom also developed on the stems of severely infected plants and the infected branches were blighted. A lots of acervuli developed on the lesions of stems. Acervuli on necrotic lesions were setose, rounded and elongated. Setae variable in length, 1~4 septate, brown, slightly swollen at the base and tapered to the apex on which conidia were occasionally borned. Statice was revealed as the new host of G. cingulata.

  • In 2003 typical phytoplasma symptoms of witches' broom and flower malformation were observed on statice (Limonium sinuatum) plants grown at commercial greenhouses in Busan, South Korea. The DNA extracted from the infected leaves was amplified using universal primer pair of Pl/P6 derived from conserved 16S rRNA gene of Mollicutes giving the expected Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product of 1.5 kb. In the nested PCR assays, the expected DNA fragment of 1.1 kb was amplified with the specific primer pair 16Fl/Rl that was designed on the basis of aster yellows (AY) phytoplasma 16S rDNA sequences. The 1.1 kb PCR products were cloned and nucleotide sequences were determined. The sequences were identical to that of Onion yellows OY phytoplasma (GenBank accession no. D12569) isolated from Onion in Japan. Electron microscopy of thin sections of leaf veins showed phytoplasma bodies in the phloem. Statice witches' broom symptom occurred on statice in commercial greenhouses in Korea was confirmed as infection of AY phytoplasma by transmission electron microscopy observation, and by determination of 16S rRNA gene sequences of phytoplasma.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of boron treatments on flower spike dieback of Statice (Limonium spp.) grown in soilless hydroponic and soil cultures under rain shelter system. The growth of Statice was gradually improved with increasing boron applications in the hydroponics, but not in soil culture with boron treatment as foliar spray or soil application. The degree of flower spike dieback in 6 levels (0, no dieback incidence to 5, very severe dieback incidence) ranged between 0.5 with boron application and 4.4 with no boron treatment. The content of boron in Statice flower spike increased with increasing rates of boron applications in the hydroponics, but the contents of P, Mg, and N were not affected by the boron application. However, K content was highest with no boron treatment. In soil culture, incidence of flower spike dieback decreased with foliar spray or soil application of boron. Therefore, boron application was effective in reducing flower spike dieback and improving cut-flower productivity and its quality, and the recommended rates of boron application were $50{\sim}80{\mu}gL^{-1}$ for hydroponics culture whereas 0.2% borex or ${\geq}0.4kg\;10a^{-1}$ boric acid by foliar spray application for soil culture.

  • The powdery mildew of Statice (Limonium shinuatum) extensively occurred in the experimental farm of Changwon Floricultural Experiment Station, Kyongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 2000. Both sides of the leaves, petioles and stems were covered with the white fungal spores and mycelia, and then the leaves, petioles and stems became dark-colored, eventually died. The conidia and conidiophores formed on the lesion were observed. Conidia were cylindric to ellipsoid, $25.3{\sim}49.4{\times}12.3{\sim}7.2{\mu}m$ in size and borne singly on conidiophore. Fibrosin bodies were not observed. Conidiophores were stright with 2-4 cylindric cells, and $65.7{\sim}124.8{\mu}m$ in size. Appressorium was lobed type. Cleistothecia were not formed. This is the first report on powdery mildew of Statice (Limonium shinuatum) caused by Oidium sp. in Korea.

  • In April of 2003, the gray mold disease occurred severely on statice (Limonium shinuatum Mill. cv. Sophia) grown in the commerical farms in Seosang-myon, Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, Korea, 2003. The infected plants were started with water-soaking lesions in the stems, the leaves and the flowers became withered and discolored to gray or dark from the tip then gradually expanded to die. The conidia and mycelia of the pathogen appeared on flowers, leaves, calyx and flower stalk. The conidia were gray, I-celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and were 8∼20 x 6∼14 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Conidiophores were 14∼34 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. The sclerotia were formed abundantly on potato-dextrose agar. The optimum temperature for sclerotial formation was 2$0^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to Koch's postulate. The causal organism was identified as Botrytis cinerea Persoon: Fries based on mycological characteristics. This is the first report on gray mold of statice (Limonium shinuatum) caused by Botrytis cinerea in Korea.

  • Stem rot of perennial statice (Limonium sinuatum) was observed in Un bong, Jeonbuk from 2006 to 2007. Affected plants were randomly distributed in the greenhouses and infection rate was more than 10%. Stem and leaf of statice at soil line were dried and turned brown, initially. As the disease became severe, other stem parts and crowns were turned dark brown and then sunken. The fungal isolates were showed initially white aerial mycelium and turned brown with age. They produced few sclerotia which small, irregularly shaped with pinpoint sized. Mycelia were branched at $90^{\circ}$ angles and multinucleate in one cell. The pathogenicity of causal organism was proved according to Koch's postulates. The causal fungus of stem rot was identified as Rhizoctonia solani based on the cultural and morphological characteristics. This is the first report on stem rot of statice by R. solani in Korea.

  • The author investigated the plant sociological studies on the flora of Inchon districts coast area. (It contains also province of Buchun, Kumpo, and Hwasung, the island of Kanghwa.) The scenery of the west coast in Korea is very curious, because the soil in this area contains comapratively large amount of mud and small sand. Some parts of this area is covered with only mud, and the area between the line of high tije and line of low tide is very vast. When a low tide was appearel, there were vast moddel places appeared about 10 km in length. The author could distinguish $\varepsilon$ different types of communties in this zone. (1) Suaeda jatonica community (2) Statice japonica community (3) Scirtus triqueier community (4) Zoy_ia community (5) Phragmites community (6) Carex Pumilla community (7) Atriolex subsodata community (8) Rosa rugasa community (1), (2), (3), (4) communities can grow under the high tide. (When the high tide comes they soaked in the sea water.) (1) Suaeda community is the most popular type of the Yellow sea. It is very wonderful scene that the vast area (the length of 10 km) is covered with this Suaeda, and it looks like to be painted with blood. (2) Staice (3) Scirpus (4) Zoysia community is can fully maintain their glorious life in the sea water. It is due to the this plants tolerance of salt. (1), (2), (3), (4) communities are very strong to the tolerance of salt, especially the Suaeda is remarkable. The structure and some sucession I trend of each community were studied in detail and the mutual relations among the communites were also concluded.
