In this study, a generalized three-degree-of-freedom (3-DoF) analytical model is formulated to predict linear aerodynamic instabilities of a prism under quasi-steady (QS) conditions. The prism is assumed to possess a generic cross-section exposed to turbulent wind flow. The 3-DoFs encompass two orthogonal horizontal directions and rotation about the prism body axis. Inertial coupling is considered to account for the non-coincidence of the mass center and the rotation center. The aerodynamic force coefficients-drag, lift, and moment-depend on the Reynolds number based on relative flow velocity, angle of attack, and the angle between the wind and the cable. Aerodynamic forces are linearized with respect to the static equilibrium configuration and mean wind velocity. Routh-Hurwitz and Liénard and Chipart criteria are used in the eigenvalue problem, yielding an analytical solution for instabilities in galloping and static divergence types. Additionally, the minimum structural damping and stiffness required to prevent these instabilities are numerically determined. The proposed 3-DoF instability model is subsequently applied to a conductor with ice accretion and a full-scale dry inclined cable. In comparison to existing models, the developed model demonstrates superior prediction accuracy for unstable regions compared with results in wind tunnel tests.
This article addresses the quasi-static analysis of time-dependent honeycomb sandwich plates with various geometrical properties based on the bending analysis of elastic honeycomb sandwich plates employing a time function with three unknown coefficients. The novel point of the developed method is that the responses of viscoelastic honeycomb sandwich plates under static transversal loads are clearly formulated in the space and time domains with very low computational costs. The mechanical properties of the sandwich plates are supposed to be elastic for the faces and viscoelastic honeycomb cells for the core. The Boltzmann superposition integral with the constant bulk modulus is used for modeling the viscoelastic material. The shear effect is expressed using the first-order shear deformation theory. The displacement field is predicted by the product of a determinate geometrical function and an indeterminate time function. The simple HP cloud mesh-free method is utilized for discretizing the equations in the space domain. Two coefficients of the time function are extracted by answering the equilibrium equation at two asymptotic times. And the last coefficient is easily determined by solving the first-order linear equation. Numerical results are presented to consider the effects of geometrical properties on the displacement history of viscoelastic honeycomb sandwich plates.

In this paper, Nash equilibriums of generation markets are investigated using a game theory application for simplified competitive electricity markets. We analyze the characteristics of equilibrium states in N-company spot markets modeled by uniform pricing auctions and propose a new method for obtaining Nash equilibriums of the auction. We assume that spot markets are operated as uniform pricing auctions and that each generation company submits its bids into the auction in the form of a seal-bid. Depending on the bids of generation companies, market demands are allocated to each company accordingly. The uniform pricing auction in this analysis can be formulated as a non-cooperative and static game in which generation companies correspond to players of the game. The coefficient of the bidding function of company-n is the strategy of player-n (company-n) and the payoff of player-n is defined as its profit from the uniform price auction. The solution of this game can be obtained using the concept of the non-cooperative equilibrium originating from the Nash idea. Based on the so called residual demand curve, we can derive the best response function of each generation company in the uniform pricing auction with N companies, analytically. Finally, we present an efficient means to obtain all the possible equilibrium set pairs and to examine their feasibilities as Nash equilibriums. A simple numerical example with three generation companies is demonstrated to illustrate the basic idea of the proposed methodology. From this, we can see the applicability of the proposed method to the real-world problem, even though further future analysis is required.
Dean's equilibrium beach profile formula was used to investigate the correlation between the static shoreline position and the incident wave energy. The effect of the longshore sediment transport was neglected, and the results showed the reasonable agreement compared with the field observations of Yates et al.(2009), which were conducted for almost 5 years on southern California beaches, USA. The shoreline response varies with the scale factor of Dean's equilibrium beach profile. This implies that the shoreline response could be simply estimated using the sampled grain size without laborious long-term field work. Therefore, the present study results are expected to be practically used for the layout design of submerged or exposed detached breakwaters although the further work is required for performance verification. In addition, after laborous mathematical reviews, the linear relation between incident energy and shoreline response, which was obtained from Yates's field study, yielded a clear mathematical equation showing how the beach slope is related to the grain size.
Quiescent filaments are bigger, more stable, and longer lived than active region filaments. So, the shape of a quiescent filament changes little during its lifetime and a fast motion of plasma rarely occurs. But when it is dynamically influenced by external phenomena, a rapid motion of plasma may temporarily occur. By analyzing the motion of plasma we can infer some of the magnetic structure permeating such an excited quiescent filament. We analyzed the H$\alpha$ images of a quiescent filament in the northern hemisphere that was observed at Big Bear Solar Observatory on 2004 August 2, and found that: 1) the filament was excited by a flare that occurred in a remote active region located in the southern hemisphere, 2) By this excitation, a part of the filament moved vertically upward and horizontally out of main body, and then it stayed there without much motion. Then after it moved vertically downward and horizontally to the main body, 3) the final position of plasma, however, was not the same as the initial position, being about 14Mm above it. We suggest that the filament was initially in a more or less static equilibrium. The excitation of the filament broke the initial equilibrium, and then brought about a new one that is different from the original one. Since the filament should have magnetic field, it is likely that both the equilibria may have been maintained by diplike magnetic structures. Furthermore, the transition from one equilibrium to another as we inferred should have accompanied a permanent change of magnetic configuration as well.
Pilot operated control valve for $CO_2$ refrigerant is a valve that can perform various functions according to the user's intention by replacing pilot units, widely used for flow rate, pressure, and temperature control of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. In addition, $CO_2$ refrigerant, that requires high pressure and low critical temperature, can be installed and used in all positions of the refrigeration system, regardless of high or low pressure. In this paper, response characteristics are modeled and analyzed based on behavior of the main piston of the pilot-operated control valve. Although various factors influence operation of the main piston, this paper analyzes the effect of equilibrium pressure depending on valve installation position and application, and inlet and outlet orifice size of the load pressure feedback chamber to determine feedback characteristics of the main piston. As a result, it was possible to quantitatively analyze the effect of change in equilibrium and load pressure feedback chamber flow path size on the change in main piston dynamic and static characteristics.
This paper presents the effect of axial stretching on large amplitude free vibration of an extensible suspended cable supported at the same level. The model formulation developed in this study is based on the virtual work-energy functional of cables which involves strain energy due to axial stretching and work done by external forces. The difference in the Euler equations between equilibrium and motion states is considered. The resulting equations govern the horizontal and vertical motion of the cables, and are coupled and highly nonlinear. The solution for the nonlinear static equilibrium configuration is determined by the shooting method while the solution for the large amplitude free vibration is obtained by using the second-order central finite difference scheme with time integration. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the vibration behaviour of extensible suspended cables.
This paper presents a displacement-based finite element procedure for second-order distributed plasticity analysis of planar steel frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column connections under static loadings. A partially strain-hardening elastic-plastic beam-column element, which directly takes into account geometric nonlinearity, gradual yielding of material, and flexibility of semi-rigid connections, is proposed. The second-order effects and distributed plasticity are considered by dividing the member into several sub-elements and meshing the cross-section into several fibers. A new nonlinear solution procedure based on the combination of the Newton-Raphson equilibrium iterative algorithm and the constant work method for adjusting the incremental load factor is proposed for solving nonlinear equilibrium equations. The nonlinear inelastic behavior predicted by the proposed program compares well with previous studies. Coupling effects of three primary sources of nonlinearity, geometric imperfections, and residual stress are investigated and discussed in this paper.
The floating ring journal bearing is attraction for high-speed turbo machinery applications, including turbochargers and aircraft accessory equipment, because it is not only simple and easy to make and to replace in the field but also it seems to have adequate high speed stability characteristics. Therefore, an analysis method of dynamic properties of floating ring journal bearing is presented. The static equilibrium locus of inner film and outer film are calculated by using the impedance description. The equivalent stiffness and damping coefficients of floating ring journal bearing are composed by using the equilibrium of torque between inner film and outer film. Then, a stability analysis of turbocharger shaft system supported with floating ring journal bearing has been performed.
Forces and moments delivered by a straight wire connecting two orthodontic brackets are statically indeterminate and cannot be estimated using the classical equations of static equilibrium. To identify the mechanics of such two-bracket systems, Burstone and Koenig used the principles of linear beam theory to estimate the resulting force systems. In the original publication, however, it remains unclear how the force systems were calculated because no reference or computational details on the underlying principles have been provided. Using the moment carry-over principle and the relative angulation of the brackets, a formula was derived to calculate the relative moments of the two brackets. Because of the moment equilibrium, the vertical forces that exist as a force-couple on the two brackets can also be calculated. The accuracy of the proposed approach can be validated using previously published empirical data.
