This article presents an integrated modeling approach for coupled analysis of heat transfer and microstructure evolution in welding carbon steel. The modeling procedure utilizes commercial [mite element code ABAQUS/Standard as the platform for solving the equation of heat conduction. User subroutines that implement computational thermodynamics and kinetics models are integrated with the FEA code to compute the transient microstructure evolution. In this study, the integrated models are applied to simulate the hot-tap repair welding of carbon steel pipeline. Microstructural components are treated as user output variables. Based on the predicted microstructure and cooling rates, hardness distributions in the welds were also predicted. The predicted microstructure and hardness distribution were found in good agreement with metallographic examinations and hardness measurements. This study demonstrates the applicability of computational models for the development of welding procedure for in-service pipeline repair.

In this study we consider a spares provisioning problem for repairable items in which a parts inventory system is incorporated. If a machine fails, a replacement part must be obtained at the parts inventory system before the failed machine enters the repair center. The inventory policy adopted at the parts inventory system is the (S, Q) policy. Operating times of the machine before failure, ordering lead times and repair times are assumed to follow a two-stage Coxian distribution. For this system, we develop an approximation method to obtain the performance measures such as steady state probabilities of the number of machines at each station and the probability that a part will wait at the parts inventory system. For the analysis of the proposed system, we model the system as a closed queueing network and analyze it using a product-form approximation method. A recursive technique as well as an iterative procedure is used to analyze the sub-network. Numerical tests show that the approximation method provides fairly good estimation of the performance measures of interest.

PLLA grafted Hydroxyapatite / polylactide (g-HA/PLA) composites were prepared by three grafting methods. The modified particles (p-HA) were dispersed more uniformly in the PLLA matrix than pure n-HA. The p-HA/PLLA composites exhibited better mechanical properties and thermal stability than the n-HA/PLLA composites. The composites also demonstrated improved cell compatibility due to the good biocompatibility of the HAP nanoparticles and the more uniform distribution of the PLLA-grafted HAP nanoparticles on the film surface. All of these results indicated that the p-HAP/PLLA nano-composites might have a promising medical application in bone repair and in bone tissue-engineering.
This paper describes of VME-BSA which is a tool for the development, mainternance and repair. In micro/mini computer system using VMEbus as a backplane bus, VME-BSA has some good facilities such as acquiring, storing and analyzering the information (address, data, etc.) on VMEbus according to the various condition which is set by users, and therefore it is easy to isolate and find many complete errors on bus.
Thirty-four patients were received bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt[BCPS] from Aug. 1989 to Apr. 1991 at Sejong General Hospital, Puchon, Korea. Their ages were from 43 days to 21 years old with 19 cases of infant, 10 from 1 to 5 years old and 5 cases above 6 years old. Their diagnoses were as follows: 13 cases with uni-ventricular heart, 9 tricuspid atresia, 6 double outlet of right ventricle, 4 pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, and 2 transposition of great arteries with pulmonary stenosis. Among them, 10 patients had received other palliative operations before. The BCPS operations were performed under the cardiopulmonary bypass and 10 patients who had bilateral superior vena cava received bilateral BCPS. Other associated procedures were 9 cases of takedown of Blalock-Taussig shunt, 3 pulmonary artery angioplasty, 1 unifocalization, 1 repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous return, 1 Damus procedure, 1 relief of sub-aortic stenosis, 1 right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction and one case of tricuspid valve obliteration. There were 3 operative deaths[8.8%] and two late deaths. The remainders show good postoperative state and their oxygen saturation was increased significantly. Conclusively, the bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt is very effective and safe palliative or pre-Fontan stage operation for the many complex congenital anomalies with low pulmonary blood flow especially for the patients who have the risk of Fontan repair.
Purpose: We try to evaluate the functional outcomes of the ankle with isokinetic plantaflexion torque for acute achilles tendon rupture cases those treated by primary repair with the Krackow suture technique and early rehabilization. Materials and Method: The authors studied retrospectively, 15 patients of acute achilles tendon rupture treated and followed over six months, from July 1997 to May 2001. There were 12 men and 3 women, and mean age was 39.6year. The repair method of ruptured tendon was single or double Krackow suture technique. One week(5days-2weeks) after operation, early ROM with ankle-foot orthosis was started. We used Arner-Lindholm Scale for the clinical evaluation and analyzed patient's satisfaction and subjective strength deficit. We analyzed the dorsiflexion peak torque and plantarflexion peak torque of the ankle statistically with strength test with Cybex dynamometer. Result: In clinical results, we had 11 excellent cases(73%) and 3 good cases(20%). In patients satisfaction degree, 11 excellent cases(66.6%), 3 good cases(20%) and 2 fair cases(13.4%). And in strength deficit, 3 none deficit (20%), 9 minimal deficit(60%). We evaluated the isokinetic plantar flexion torque in 3months or 6months after operation. After 3 months, isokinetic test showed the mean functional deficits, 32% and 25% at $30^{\circ}$ and $120^{\circ}/sec$, in 7 cases(46.6%) of 15 cases respectively. After 6 months, the mean deficits were in 21%, 24% at 30. and $120^{\circ}/sec$, respectively. At 3 and 6 months' follow up, absolute value of isokinetic test showed increase of 25. 31bs to 421bs and 19.61bs to 271bs at $30^{\circ}$ and $120^{\circ}/sec$, respectively. Conclusion: We had good result for acute achilles tendon rupture treated by Krakow suture technique and early range of motion exercise of the ankle. After 6 months, strength deficit was 21% in all of cases but were able to return pre-injured state. This study shows Krakow suture technique was recommended method for primary repair and early rehabilization of achilles tendon ruptue.

This paper deals with the reliability analysis of a complex system with three possibilities at the time of repair. The considered system consists of two subsystems A and Bin series configuration (1-out-of-2: F). Subsystem A has n units which are connected in series whereas subsystem B consists of n units in parallel configuration. The configuration of subsystem A is of 1-out-of-n: F whereas subsystem B is of k-out-of-n: D and k+1-out-of-n: F nature. System has three states: Good, degraded and failed. Supplementary variable technique has been used for mathematical formulation of the model. Laplace transform is being utilized to solve the mathematical equation. Reliability, Availability, M.T.T.F., Busy Period and Cost effectiveness of the system have been computed. The repairs from state $S_7$ to $S_0$, $S_8$ to $S_0$, $S_9$ to $S_0$ and $S_{11}$ to $S_0$ have two types namely exponential and general. Joint probability distribution of repair rate from $S_7$ to $S_0$, $S_8$ to $S_0$, $S_9$ to $S_0$ and $S_{11}$ to $S_0$ is computed by Gumbel-Hougaard family of copula. Some particular cases of the system have also been derived to see the practical importance of the model.

A stochastic expected cost model has been suggested by combining the nonlinear cumulative damage model with the expected cost model together which can be useful for doing the preventive optimal-maintenance of the armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters. The suggested model has been satisfactorily calibrated by comparison of the results from others models, also the sensitivity analysis has been carried out in detail under the variation of the associated parameters with the model. The optimal repair times can be directly evaluated by minimizing the expected cost rates that depend on the social importances, damage intensity functions and resistance limits. Finally, the present cost model has been straightforwardly applied to the armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters. Based on the assumption of turning the damaged structure back to the state as good as new after repairs, the required optimal repair times and magnitudes can be determined quantitatively in terms of the optimum balance between the costs and benefits on the preventive maintenance.

Rail transit agencies in Korea have been struggling to set up a performance-based rail facility maintenance plan because there are no formal definition and decision criteria for aging infrastructure. This study investigates the definition of aging infrastructure through extensive literature review and identifies benchmarking criteria through comparison with rail transit facility management systems in Korea and United States. As results, an aging infrastructure should be defined considering both service age and performance level of a facility. The priority of repair/replacement should be also determined with reasonable criteria based on relationship between service age and performance level. To determine the definition and decision criteria, a practicable classification system for aging rail transit needs to be established in accordance with classification system for performance assessment. Furthermore, a comprehensive database needs to be built including useful life, performance level, and maintenance cost of each component of rail transit. It will allow establishing an efficient budget execution plan for aging infrastructure.
