  • The smart substation is the heart of a transmission system, which is particularly emphasized as the most significant composition of smart grids in China. In order to assess the functionality performance of substation technologies, this paper presents methods used to identify the most promising solutions for smart substation design and to evaluate the technical levels of available technologies. The multi-index optimization model is presented to address the issue of smart substation planning. A mathematical model of the planning decision problem is established with multiple objectives consisting of economic, reliability, and green key indices, and many kinds of concerns including physical and environmentally friendly operations are formulated as a set of constraints. With respect to the assessment of the technical level regarding integration of advanced technologies into a substation, a modified grey whitenization weight function is adopted to structure a novel grey clustering method. The proposed grey clustering approach is used to overcome the difficulty of insufficient quantitative assessment capacity for traditional methods. The evaluation of technical effects provides the classification definition for the development phase and the maturity level of the smart substation. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches in planning decision-making and evaluation of construction efforts is demonstrated with case studies involving the actual smart substation projects of Wenchongkou substation in China Southern Power Grid (CSG) and Mengzi substation in State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC).

  • Image distortions are typically characterized by degradations of structures. Dictionaries learned from natural images can capture the underlying structures in images, which are important for image quality assessment (IQA). This paper presents a general-purpose no-reference image quality metric using a GRadient-Induced Dictionary (GRID). A dictionary is first constructed based on gradients of natural images using K-means clustering. Then image features are extracted using the dictionary based on Euclidean-norm coding and max-pooling. A distortion classification model and several distortion-specific quality regression models are trained using the support vector machine (SVM) by combining image features with distortion types and subjective scores, respectively. To evaluate the quality of a test image, the distortion classification model is used to determine the probabilities that the image belongs to different kinds of distortions, while the regression models are used to predict the corresponding distortion-specific quality scores. Finally, an overall quality score is computed as the probability-weighted distortion-specific quality scores. The proposed metric can evaluate image quality accurately and efficiently using a small dictionary. The performance of the proposed method is verified on public image quality databases. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed metric can generate quality scores highly consistent with human perception, and it outperforms the state-of-the-arts.

  • In this paper we propose a design method of the adaptive fuzzy controller for autonomous navigation of mobile robots based on the fuzzy theory. We present two improvements. First, unnecessary rules in the fuzzy inference process make data processing time increase. We reduce this data processing time by generating suitable fuzzy inference rules and membership functions according to the current state of a mobile robot. It is implemented with the clustering method using input and output data pairs, and then it is possible for a mobile robot to navigate in shorter processing time with less fuzzy inference rules. Second, existing algorithms used fixed membership functions of input and output variables, hence converged slowly. We improve convergence time via scaling membership functions generated by the clustering method. To evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed method with the existing fuzzy navigation controller, computer simulations and navigation experiments of a mobile robot are Presented.

  • In the modern economic context, it is apparent that there is a strong focus on the importance of global shipping industry. Recently, the world economic crisis has negatively influenced the industry with regard to both supply and demand, which has seen almost no sign of recovery. The fact that the entire industry is operating with low efficiency and at a low profit state has made all stakeholders anxious. This research examines the financial performance of the world's major shipping lines in order to give maritime stakeholders a closer look into the industry behind the ranking. Besides, the research evaluates the competitiveness of shipping companies in terms of financial ability and suggestions for strategic actions to stakeholders are provided. For these purposes, Fuzzy-C Means is used to cluster the selected lines into different groups based on their financial indices, namely liquidity, asset management, debt management and profitability. Levene's tests which are then followed by ANOVA tests are also utilized to assess the robustness of the clustering outcomes. The results indicate that liquidity, solvency and profitability act as the main criteria in the classification problem.

  • Automatic speech recognition(ASR) is attractive technique in trend these day that seek convenient life. Although many approaches have been proposed for ASR but the performance is still not good in noisy environment. Now-a-days in the state of art in speech recognition, ASR uses not only the audio information but also the visual information. In this paper, We present a novel lip detection method for visual speech recognition in mobile environment. In order to apply visual information to speech recognition, we need to extract exact lip regions. Because eye-detection is more easy than lip-detection, we firstly detect positions of left and right eyes, then locate lip region roughly. After that we apply K-means clustering technique to devide that region into groups, than two lip corners and lip center are detected by choosing biggest one among clustered groups. Finally, we have shown the effectiveness of the proposed method through the experiments based on samsung AVSR database.

  • WSN, or Wireless Sensor Network, consists of a multitude of inexpensive micro-sensors. Because the batteries in sensor nodes can not be replaced once they are deployed, the life of a WSN is absolutely determined by the batteries. So, energy efficiency of a network is a critical factor for long-life operation. LEACH protocol which divides WSN into two groups is a typical routing protocol based on the clustering scheme for the efficient use of limited energy. It is composed of round units which are separated into set-up and steady state. In this paper we propose a power saving scheme to minimize set-up phase itself and to involve a data comparison algorithm. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in comparison with original LEACH protocol. Simulation results validate our scheme has better performance in terms of the number of alive nodes as time evolves and average energy dissipated.

  • The Wireless sensor network(WSN) consisting of a large number of sensors aims to gather data in a variety of environments. The sensor nodes operate on battery of limited power. so, To extend network life time is major goals of research in the WSN. In this paper, we state the key point of a energy consumption with minimum&load balancing. The proposed protocol guarantee balance of number of cluster member nodes using the node memory threshold and optimization of distribution of cluster head using the optimized clustering method. The results show that the proposed protocol could support the load balancing and high energy efficiency by distributing the clusters with a reasonable number of member nodes. The simulation results show that our schme ensure longer life time in WSN as compare with existing schemes such as LEACH and CBLM.

  • In this study, we investigated genetic diversity of 22 microsporidian isolates infecting tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta collected from various geographical forest locations in the state of Jharkhand, India, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based marker assay: random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). A type species, NIK-1s_mys was used as control for comparison. The shape of mature microsporidians was found to be oval to elongate, measuring 3.80 to $5.10{\mu}m$ in length and 2.56 to $3.30{\mu}m$ in width. Of the 20 RAPD primers screened, 16 primers generated reproducible profiles with 298 polymorphic fragments displaying high degree of polymorphism (97%). A total of 14 RAPD primers produced 45 unique putative genetic markers, which were used to differentiate the microsporidians. Calculation of genetic distance coefficients based on dice coefficient method and clustering with un-weighted pair group method using arithmetic average (UPGMA) analysis was conducted to unravel the genetic diversity of microsporidians infecting tasar silkworm. The similarity coefficients varied from 0.059 to 0.980. UPGMA analysis generated a dendrogram with four microsporidian groups, which appear to be different from each other as well as from NIK-1s_mys. Two-dimensional distribution based on Euclidean distance matrix also revealed considerable variability among different microsporidians identified from the tasar silkworms. Clustering of few microsporidian isolates was in accordance with the geographic origin. The results indicate that the RAPD profiles and specific/unique genetic markers can be used for differentiating as well as to identify different microsporidians with considerable accuracy.

  • One of the major challenges of designing a dissemination protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) is energy efficiency. Recently, this issue has received much attention from the research community, and SPMS, which outperforms the well-known protocol SPIN, specially is a representative protocol. In addition, one of many characters of SPMS is the use of the shortest path to minimize the energy consumption. However, since it repeatedly uses the same path as the shortest path, the maximizing of the network lifetime is impossible, though it reduces the energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a dissemination protocol using probability-based clustering which guarantees energy-efficient data transmission and maximizes network lifetime. The proposed protocol solves the network lifetime problem by a novel probability function, which is related to the residual energy and the transmission radius between nodes. The simulation results show that it guarantees energy-efficient transmission and moreover increases the network lifetime by approximately 78% than that of SPMS.

  • Objective: Conservation and genetic improvement of cattle breeds require information about genetic diversity and population structure of the cattle. In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity and population structure of the three cattle breeds in the Korean peninsula. Methods: Jeju Black, Hanwoo, Holstein cattle in Korea, together with six foreign breeds were examined. Genetic diversity within the cattle breeds was analyzed with minor allele frequency (MAF), observed and expected heterozygosity (HO and HE), inbreeding coefficient (FIS) and past effective population size. Molecular variance and population structure between the nine breeds were analyzed using a model-based clustering method. Genetic distances between breeds were evaluated with Nei's genetic distance and Weir and Cockerham's FST. Results: Our results revealed that Jeju Black cattle had lowest level of heterozygosity (HE = 0.21) among the studied taurine breeds, and an average MAF of 0.16. The level of inbreeding was -0.076 for Jeju Black, while -0.018 to -0.118 for the other breeds. Principle component analysis and neighbor-joining tree showed a clear separation of Jeju Black cattle from other local (Hanwoo and Japanese cattle) and taurine/indicine cattle breeds in evolutionary process, and a distinct pattern of admixture of Jeju Black cattle having no clustering with other studied populations. The FST value between Jeju Black cattle and Hanwoo was 0.106, which was lowest across the pair of breeds ranging from 0.161 to 0.274, indicating some degree of genetic closeness of Jeju Black cattle with Hanwoo. The past effective population size of Jeju Black cattle was very small, i.e. 38 in 13 generation ago, whereas 209 for Hanwoo. Conclusion: This study indicates genetic uniqueness of Jeju Black cattle. However, a small effective population size of Jeju Black cattle indicates the requirement for an implementation of a sustainable breeding policy to increase the population for genetic improvement and future conservation.
