  • Ultrasonic and magnetic resonance imaging systems are used to visualize the interior states of biological objects. These nondestructive methods have many advantages but too much expensive. And they do not give exact color information and may miss some details. If it is allowed to destruct some biological objects to get the interior and exterior information, constructing 3D image from the series of the sliced sectional images gives more useful information with relatively low cost. In this paper, PC based automatic 3D model generator was developed. The system was composed of three modules. One is the object handling and image acquisition module, which feeds and slices objects sequentially and maintains the paraffin cool to be in solid state and captures the sectional image consecutively. The second is the system control and interface module, which controls actuators for feeding, slicing, and image capturing. And the last is the image processing and visualization module, which processes a series of acquired sectional images and generates 3D graphic model. The handling module was composed of the gripper, which grasps and feeds the object and the cutting device, which cuts the object by moving cutting edge forward and backward. Sliced sectional images were acquired and saved in the form of bitmap file. The 3D model was generated to obtain the volumetric information using these 2D sectional image files after being segmented from the background paraffin. Once 3-D model was constructed on the computer, user could manipulate it with various transformation methods such as translation, rotation, scaling including arbitrary sectional view.

  • This paper presents the state of art and the role of geophysical exploration techniques with evaluating the trend of domestic and worldwide seawater intrusion research, and illustrates advanced techniques obtained through the project of 'Development of the techniques for estimation, prediction, and prevention of seawater intrusion' funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Korea. The advanced geophysical interpretation was achieved by adding the digital geophysical logging data. DC resistivity and TEM monitorings were applied to determine whether or not the seawater intrusion was in progress. Induced Polarization technique using electric current monitoring channel was introduced to discriminate seawater contaminated zone from highly conductive layer caused by clay minerals. A conceptual model was suggested with spatial visualization of the study area to predict the diffusion of seawater contamination. Finally, the future work of the development of geophysical techniques was suggested with the base of the present level of them.

  • In order to analyze the quantitative characteristics of acoustic streaming, experimental setup of 3-D stereoscopic PIV(particle imaging velocimetry) was designed and quantitative ultrasonic flow fields in the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source were measured. Utilizing acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration, surface temperature drop of cooling object was also measured. The study on smart cooling method by acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration was performed due to the empirical relations of flow pattern, average flow velocity, different gaps, and enhancement on cooling rates in the gap. Average velocity fields and maximum acoustic streaming velocity in the open gap between the stationary cylindrical heat source and ultrasonic vibrator were experimentally measured at no vibration, resonance, and non-resonance. It was clearly observed that the enhancement of cooling rates existed owing to the acoustic air flow in the gap at resonance and non-resonance induced by ultrasonic vibration. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap creates steady-state secondary eddy called acoustic streaming which enhances heat transfer from the heat source to encompassing air. The intensity of the acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration experimentally depended upon the gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator. The ultrasonic vibration at resonance caused the increase of the acoustic streaming velocity and convective heat transfer augmentation when the flow fields by 3D stereoscopic PIV and temperature drop of the heat source were measured experimentally. The acoustic streaming velocity of air enhancement on cooling rates in the gap is maximal when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which is specifically 12 mm.

  • Purpose: Currently, using perforator artery flaps especially anterolateral thigh flaps are widely used for reconstruction of extremities, head and neck. Obtaining a precise anatomical picture prior to operation will translate to a more accurate, efficient and safe procedure. Authors used 3D-image work up via 64-slice MDCT to make a more precise preoperative plan. Methods: A total of 10 patients underwent soft tissue reconstruction with anterolateral thigh flap from December 2006 to December 2007. The 64-Channel MDCT (LightSpeed VCT, GE, USA) was used and 3D images were reconstructed. Findings from MDCT were applied to the preoperative planning and confirmed with intraoperative findings. Results: The average number of perforator arteries from lateral circumflex femoral artery was 2. The average lengths of vascular pedicle from the origin of lateral circumflex femoral artery to the first and second perforator artery were 11.0 cm and 20.0 cm, respectively. The average diameter of the pedicle artery was 2.2 mm. The locations of the perforator arteries were mapped and localized on the body surface based on the MDCT result. These were confirmed through direct visualization intraoperatively. Conclusion: MDCT has an advantage of obtaining accurate images of the general anatomy and even fine structures like perforator arteries. By using this state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging technique, it is now possible to make an operative plan safely and easily.

  • Knowledge map is widely used to represent knowledge in many domains. This paper presents a method of integrating the national R&D data and assists of users to navigate the integrated data via using a knowledge map service. The knowledge map service is built by using a lightweight ontology modeling method. The national R&D data is integrated with the research project as its center, i.e., the other R&D data such as research papers, patent, and project reports are connected with the research project as its outputs. The lightweight ontology is used to represent the simple relationships between the integrated data such as project-outputs relationships, document-author relationships, and document-topic relationships. Knowledge map enables us to infer the further relationships such as co-author and co-topic relationships. To extract the relationships between the integrated data, a RDB-to-Triples transformer is implemented. Lastly, we show an experiment on R&D data integration using the lightweight ontology, triples generation, and visualization and navigation of the knowledge map.

  • This paper is about a serious game controlled by EEG and motion capture. We developed our game for 2 users competitive and its method is as follows. One player uses a controlling interface using EEG signals based on the premise that the player's facial movements are a depiction of the player's emotion and intensity throughout the game play. The other player uses a controlling interface using kinect's motion capture technology which captures the player's vertical and lateral movements as well as state of running. The game shows the first player's EEG as a real-time graphic along the map on the game screen. The player will then be able to pace himself based on these visualization graphics of his brain activities. This results in higher concentration for the player throughout the game for a better score in the game. In addition, the second player will be able to improve his physical abilities since the game action is based on real movements from the player.

  • Cable dome structures are composed of cables-masts and the cables should be in pre-tension since a structure without pre-tension is not stable. Under the pretension, self equilibrium stress state is the main characteristic of a cable dome structure. In this paper, a new method based on the basic principle of closed force polygon for equilibrium system is proposed for the determination of self-equilibrium mode of cable dome structure. The proposed method which is called geometric method has the unique characteristic of visualization of the force mode needed for maintenance of self-equilibrium. The basic theory for a self equilibrium of structure is that the summation of forces at each joint without any external load should be zero. The simplicity of the method which involves only drawing close polygon with the aid of suitable CAD software has been illustrated by means of a example. The results compared with mechanical calculation and existed method and shows good agreement.

  • In theses days, data has been explosively generated in diverse industrial areas. Accordingly, many industries want to collect and analyze these data to improve their products or services. However, collecting user data can lead to significant personal information leakage. Local differential privacy (LDP) proposed by Google is the state-of-the-art approach that is used to protect individual privacy in the process of data collection. LDP guarantees that the privacy of the user is protected by perturbing the original data at the user's side, but a data collector is still able to obtain population statistics from collected user data. However, the prevention of leakage of personal information through such data perturbation mechanism may cause the significant reduction in the data utilization. Therefore, the degree of data perturbation in LDP should be set properly depending on the data collection and analysis purposes. Thus, in this paper, we develop the simulation tool which aims to help the data collector to properly chose the degree of data perturbation in LDP by providing her/him visualized simulated results with various parameter configurations.

  • Various jet engines (Turbine engine family and RAM Jet engine) have been developed for high speed aircrafts. but their application to hypersonic flight is restricted by principle problems such as increase of total pressure loss and thermal stress. Therefore, the development of next generation propulsion system for hypersonic aircraft is a very important subject in the aerospace engineering field, SCRAM Jet engine based on a key technology, Supersonic Combustion. is supposed as the best choice for the hypersonic flight. Since Supersonic Combustion requires both rapid ignition and stable flame holding within supersonic air stream, much attention have to be given on the mixing state between air stream and fuel flow. However. the wider diffusion of fuel is expected with less total pressure loss in the supersonic air stream. So. in this study the direction of fuel injection is inclined 30 degree to downstream and the total pressure of jet is controlled for lower penetration height than thickness of boundary layer. Under these flow configuration both streams, fuel and supersonic air stream, would not mix enough. To spread fuel wider into supersonic air an aerodynamic force, baroclinic torque, is adopted. Baroclinic torque is generated by a spatial misalignment between pressure gradient (shock wave plane) and density gradient (mixing layer). A wedge is installed in downstream of injector orifice to induce an oblique shock. The schlieren optical visualization from side transparent wall and the total pressure measurement at exit cross section of combustor estimate how mixing is enhanced by the incidence of shock wave into supersonic boundary layer composed by fuel and air. In this study non-combustionable helium gas is injected with total pressure 0.66㎫ instead of flammable fuel to clarify mixing process. Mach number 1.8. total pressure O.5㎫, total temperature 288K are set up for supersonic air stream.

  • Banana is the eighth most important crop in the world designated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In terms of production, it is the fourth most harvested crop following wheat, rice, and corn, considered to be a promising food source for mankind as it is not only scrumptious but also rich in nutrients. However, abnormal cultivation methods that mankind has invented to breed bananas is currently pushing them to the state of extinction. The aim of this study is to develop information-rich digital contents that can easily and intriguingly convey information about steadily but certainly increasing risk of banana extinction. The end-users are middle and high school students who are assumed to be aware of the agricultural revolution through their school curriculum. The linear storytelling method was meant to encourage the end-users to be interested in the causes and processes in which banana has become endangered. For generating a natural interaction between the content and the end-users, a parallel, upper-lower structure was used, in which the relationship between the stories comprising several stages and the information graphic supporting each story is represented. This paper can support an information campaign about the endangered species.
