The unavoidable forecast error of wind power is one of the biggest obstacles for wind farms to participate in day-ahead electricity market. To mitigate the deviation from forecast, installation of energy storage system (ESS) is considered. An accurate model of wind power forecast error is fundamental for ESS sizing. However, previous study shows that the error distribution has variable kurtosis and fat tails, and insufficient measurement data of wind farms would add to the difficulty of modeling. This paper presents a comprehensive way that makes the use of mixed skewness model (MSM) and copula theory to give a better approximation for the distribution of forecast error, and it remains valid even if the dataset is not so well documented. The model is then used to optimize the ESS power and capacity aiming to pay the minimal extra cost. Results show the effectiveness of the new model for finding the optimal size of ESS and increasing the economic benefit.
Currently, batteries use commonly as energy sources for mobile electric devices. Due to the high density of energy, the energy storage state of a battery is very important information. To know the battery's energy storage state, it is necessary to find out the open state voltage of the battery. The open state voltage calculates with a mathematical model, but the computation of the real time state is complicated and requires many calculations. Therefore, the state observer designs to estimate in real time the battery open-circuit voltage as disturbance including model error. Using the estimated open voltage and applying it to the state estimation algorithm, we can estimate the charge. In this study, we first estimate the open-circuit voltage and design an estimation algorithm for estimating the state of battery charge. This includes errors in the system model and has a robust characteristic to noise. It is possible to increase the precision of the charge state estimation.

Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis(ESCA) allowes the determination of the elemental composition and the bonding state of the surface atomes in the interface between two materials. In the binding energies of ESCA spectrum, there are zero error, voltage scaling error and random error. Accurate analysis of the intensity energy response functions and accurate calibration of the energy scale are essential to use X-ray photoelectron spectron meter. At the results of the calibration of the ESCA spectra in the copper and cordierite (Mg2Al4Si5kO18) interfaces, the errors relative to the copper are -3.03 eV for the zero error -z,-197 ppm for the voltage scaling error -V and 6.9 meV for the random error -R. The method of the calibration is able to apply for the binding energy calibration of the another ESCA spectra.

The optimal thickness distribution of an active damping layer is sought so that it satisfies a certain constraint on the dynamic performance of a system minimizing control efforts. To obtain a topologically optimized configuration, which includes size and shape optimization, thickness of the active damping layer is interpolated using linear functions. With the control energy as the objective function to be minimized, the state error energy is introduced as the dynamic performance criterion for the system and used lot a constraint. The optimal control gains are evaluated from LQR simultaneously as the optimization of the layer position proceeds. From numerical simulation, the topologically optimized distribution of the active damping layer shows the same dynamic performance and cost as the Idly covered counterpart, which is optimized only in terms of control gains, with less amount of the layer.

This paper describes a new method for enhancing the accuracy of network analysis applications in energy management systems. Topology processing, state estimation, power flow analysis, and contingency analysis play a key factor in the stable and reliable operation of power systems. In this respect, the aim of topology processing is to provide the electrical buses and the electrical islands with the actual state of the power system as input data. The results of topology processing is used to input of other applications. New method, which includes the topology error analysis based on inconsistency check, coherency check, bus mismatch check, and outaged device check is proposed to enhance the accuracy of network analysis. The proposed methodology is conducted by energy management systems and the Korean power systems have been utilized for the test systems.
In general, secondary batteries are widely used as an electric energy source. Among them, the state of energy storage of mobile devices is very important information. As a method of estimating a state, there is a method of estimating the state by integrating the current according to an energy storage state of a battery, and a method of designing a state estimator by measuring a voltage and estimating a charge amount based on a battery model. In this study, we designed the state estimator using an extended Kalman filter to increase the precision of the state estimation of the charge amount by including the error of the system model and having the robustness to the noise.
Automatic generation control (AGC) is an important function for load frequency control, which is being implemented in Energy Management System (EMS). A key feature of AGC is to back up governors to enhance the performance of frequency control. The governor regulates system frequency in several to ten seconds, while the droop control concept results in steady-state control error. AGC is a supplementary tool for compensation of the steady-state error caused by the droop setting of the governors. As the AGC target is delivered to each generator as an open loop control target, the generator output is not guaranteed to follow the AGC target. In this paper, we introduce generating unit controller (GUC) control block, which has the purpose of enabling the generator output to track the AGC target while maintaining the governor performance. We also address the tuning methods of GUC for better performance of AGC in the Korea Energy Management System (K-EMS).
Sand and dust storm in East Asia, so called Asian dust, is a seasonal meteorological phenomenon. Mostly in spring, dust particles blown into atmosphere in the arid area over northern China desert and Manchuria are transported to East Asia by prevailing flows. An Asian dust event occurred on 6-8 May 2007 is chosen to investigate how sensitive the Asian dust transport forecast to the initial condition uncertainties and to interpret the characteristics of sensitivity structures from the viewpoint of dynamics and predictability. To investigate the forecast sensitivities to the initial condition, adjoint sensitivities that calculate gradient of the forecast aspect (i.e., response function) with respect to the initial condition are used. The forecast aspects relevant to Asian dust transports are dry energy forecast error and lower tropospheric pressure forecast error. The results show that the sensitive regions for the dry energy forecast error and the lower tropospheric pressure forecast error are initially located in the vicinity of the trough and then propagate eastward as the surface low system moves eastward. The vertical structures of the adjoint sensitivities for the dry energy forecast error are upshear tilted structures, which are typical adjoint sensitivity structures for extratropical cyclones. Energy distribution of singular vectors also show very similar structures with the adjoint sensitivities for the dry energy forecast error. The adjoint sensitivities of the lower tropospheric pressure forecast error with respect to the relative vorticity show that the accurate forecast of the trough (or relative vorticity) location and intensity is essential to have better forecasts of the Asian dust event. Forecast error for the atmospheric circulation during the dust event is reduced 62.8% by extracting properly weighted adjoint sensitivity perturbations from the initial state. Linearity assumption holds generally well for this case. Dynamics of the Asian dust transport is closely associated with predictability of it, and the improvement in the overall forecast by the adjoint sensitivity perturbations implies that adjoint sensitivities would be beneficial in improving the forecast of Asian dust events.

In this paper, an adjustable multiple relay selection (MRS) scheme for cooperative communication with amplify-and-forward (AF) relay under frequency selective channels is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the relays are ordered firstly by the steady-state mean square error (MSE), then the relays are sequentially selected out from N relays and the number of cooperating relays is adjusted dynamically according to the steady-state mean square joint error (MSJE). The aim of this work is to dynamically estimate the optimum number No of cooperating relays. Optimum means the minimum number of cooperating relays, No, achieving the minimum level of steady-state MSJE. Numerical results verify the analyses and show that the scheme can adaptively adjust the number of cooperating relays, and outperform conventional relay selection schemes. Hence, the proposed scheme provides better tradeoff between BER performance and spectral efficiency and to save more energy in cooperative wireless networks.
Declutching control is applied to a hemispherical wave energy converter with direct linear electric Power-Take-Off systems oscillating in heave direction in both regular and irregular waves. The direct linear Power-Take-Off system can be simplified as a mechanical spring and damper system. Time domain model is applied to dynamics of the hemispherical wave energy converter in both regular and irregular waves. And state space model is used to replace the convolution term in time domain equation of the heave oscillation of the converter due to its inconvenience in analyzing the controlled motion of the converters. The declutching control strategy is conducted by optimal command theory based on Pontryagin's maximum principle to gain the controlled optimum sequence of Power-Take-Off forces. The results show that the wave energy converter with declutching control captures more energy than that without control and the former's amplitude and velocity is relatively larger. However, the amplification ratio of the absorbed power by declutching control is only slightly larger than 1. This may indicate that declutching control method may be inapplicable for oscillating wave energy converters with direct linear Power-Take-Off systems in real random sea state, considering the error of prediction of the wave excitation force.
